Health of tile Ilthmas. The Panama Herald denies the statement of n New York paper, as to the great mortality uiuoug the laborers on the Isthmus. The tdi tor says there js uo more sickness there just now, tliau there is iu New York. [From the Journal ofCoinmerce. Telegraph Across line Atlantic. 1 wish through your columns to call the at- : tendon of the public, uud especially of the bu- j siness community, to the project of ji new com pany now being formed, of capitalists in this , country and Europe, for the building of ft sub marine and subterranean telegraph line from j X. York to Liverpool. Several similar pro- i jects have heretofore been started in Eng- j land, ami various plans and routes hav boon . suggested, advocated, and eventually abuudou- i cd us impracticable, until at last there came to ! be n pretty well settled conviction, that the problem of an electrical communication between tiie two continents was not destined to be solve l i by any of the known processes in operation. The fact was, there were many grave obstacles j in the way of the Accomplishment of these en terprises—the chief of which was, that both ; scientific and practical men asserted, and abun- j and intly demonstrated, that there was not to bo j found in the telegraphic wire, under any known j process of preparation, or in any buttery as at j present constructed, sufficient capacity to carry 1 a steady and continuous electric current through so great a distance, as oven the shortest route , between the two continents must necessarily j traverse. The longest stretch of submarine j wire yet laid down in Europe, is that extending i from England to Ostend, in Belgium, a distance ot less than 100 miles. Yet, even this route, short i as it is, when compared with the trails atluntie Ones heretofore projected, is not always reliable, nod has continually to contend against many ! difficulties which arc inherent ii its mode of : construction and electrical transmission. Under such circumstances, it is not strange that the l apitalists of England refused to Mibscribe for j the building of those projected lines, or that the various plausible schemes submitted to their fa- j iur le*l through, one after another, almost as soon jus they were originated. They wore all looked upon by practical and scientific men as i highly chimerical, or at best, ns but very doubt- j ful. as well a? very costly experiments. But anew era is about to duwn on the tele graphic world. It is well known to those in- j forested in such matters, that American as well as European ingenuity has been for some years ! nt work, to discover some means whereby the difficulties which stood in the way of the ac fcoinoli.-hmcnt of so desirable a consummation s ji line of telegraph from England to America, jtnd which had taken down so many promising Schemes; might be overcome. These means have been at last discovered. A gentleman of j Massachusetts, who has been lor some years j experimenting in tho matter, has invented, or j more properly, discovered a method by which ‘ the conducting capacity of telegraphic wire is | increased to an astonishing power—being many j hundred per cc'ftt. oyer that possessed by any i of tho ite prepared by any oftlie processes now in use. Tho same gentleman has also made a | very important itnpiovement. in tho mode of I laying down submarine and subterranean wire, j I>v which mode tho most perfect Insulation is attained.coupled with the fullest protection from l fextornal injury, or interruption of any kind; j nnd that too, at a cost of less than ono third of ! that of the present modes of subterranean con- j fitruction. 15ot-h of these itrtproventen.s hare hocn pur- 1 chased by the proprietors forming tho new i Company, to which 1 have alluded, and their ; possession of these forms tho chief ground for j anticipating the eoiupletost success to their ) enterprise, on afield iu which so many others have failed. The European uud American Submarine Hud Subterranean Telegraph Company is in course of organization, and most of its stock has been subscribed for; and it numbers anong its members many men of means, and enter prize, well known on both sides of tho Atlantic j Their object is, as stated in the beginning of | this communication, to construct a line of sub- i marine uud subterranean (olograph between New York and Liverpool. Their plans are al alreudy fully matured, and the route of the pro posed line marked out. Their wires will con nect at Liverpool with subterranean and sub marine wires extending to all important points throughout Great Britain and tho continent of Europe. Starting wcstwnrdly from Liverpool, a lino will connect that port with Dublin, (via Holy head,) whence a subterranean wire will extend to Galway. From this port, the submarine comes in play again, with the coast of New foundland, whence n submarine w ire will be laid down to Nova Scotia, where tho connection will bo again taken up by (ho subterranean wire and continued to New York. The whole length of tho toute from Galway to New York as thus marked out is about 2-,800 miles tho cost por mile for tho submarine wire, on tho improved plun, is estimated at less than S6UO the cost by tho method now in use, on the cheapest seale, would be fully SBOO. For tho subterranean portions of thermite, the estima ted cost is about S2OO per mile,, which is less than ono third of tue cost of such lines now in use. This Company then, with their improved inodes of construction and operation, can build their lines at a cost vastly below previous esti mates, and in a manner to insure the full reali zation of their expectations. The facility too, with which tho line can bo built on the now plan, is such that the construction of the whole route from Liverpool to New York can bo ac complished in six months from its commence ment, so that, if the Company begins its operations, as it is now contemplated by them, as early in tho ensuing spring ns the state of the ground and tho weather will permit, we may confidently anticipate a direct telegraphic communication with Europe by the opening of next autumn. From that period, the time be tween the various commercial marts of Europe and America, will be measured by minutes and seconds, instead of days anil hours ns at present, nnd steam communication, oven by the fastest boats yet built, or to \>q built, will be comparitively a slow process Edgar A. Poe.—nr übokqk lippard. On a hot summer day, when the cholera was i in the city, there came up four stairsways, into I a printing office, a slender mail poorly clad, and j with but one shoe. There may have been ge nius written on his broad forehead, and tho j large love of a pure but neglected intellect in ! his deaf eytss-—blit ho Was poorly cl id, and i ! with but one shoe to his feet, lie eti’ine stealthi ■ ly up stairs, ns if conscious that the world had j j forsaken him, and that he was an intruder any whore. 110 sat quietly flown, near a table where I a young man—an author—was writing. Then j tho poet—for the man Shabbily clad was a poet— ‘ ; spoke to the author, and told him how lie had no bread to cal—no place to sleep—not one J friend in God’s world. He besought the author I not to forsake him. “ You are my last hopo. If you tuil me, I ! • can do nothing but die.” You may bo sure that the words which ho spoke, and the voice in which he spoke them, went straight home to the author’s heart. Ho had not soon the poet for some lime. But he remembered how that poet had once a quiet ; home, lightened by the smile of a wife—-lioiv bo, j the author, had often sat by him, and listened : to him, as ho poured out, free and unrestrained, the full thought of his heart. And the heart of I tho author sickened within him, to see a man ‘ i like this in want of bread—in want of a bed to ‘ sleep upon. But the fun of the tiling was, the author had 1 | just paid his last quarter’s rent, and was with- I i out a penny iu tho world, 110 must therefore go forth, on that dreary summer’s day, and en i dcavor to gain a few pence for the poet, from j among the class who grew rich upon the labors ; ot these beggarly devils—-authors and poets. “Tell them that lam sick. That I hav’nta I bed to sleep upon. That 1 only wartt enough i to get me out )t‘ Philadelphia. Tell them plain ly. For God’s sake don’t fail me. You’re my ; I List hope:” j The author went out. Sick himself, and poor, ; he Went from floor to door, but every body was | out of town. It was a wretched day; cholera bulletins upon every ocwsp ‘pcr door, .•.ml a hot i sun pouring flown over half deserted streets. I The author was taken pick, aud had but just ‘ strength enough to get to his own hotne. Next morning, just after daybreak, ho hnr- I ried down to the printing office, and found the j I poet there, sitting nt the table in one corner, . liis head between his hands, j “ I thought you had deserted me,” he said, I and tears came into his eyes. This was strange, ; for ho was not tho man for that kind of thing, j Then ho told him how bo had waited there the i j ‘lay before—how he had paced those streets of Philadelphia, which, to (lie poor, arc as full of | hopo as the hottest and dreariest piece of sand j l iu Sahara—how the very hourt was k: >ke with- ! | iu him. Jle also told Wow, before ho cainc to sco tho J author, the day provious, lie hail waited upon j more than one person, whose eminence in lito i rature was owiug to his criticisms—and how l those eminent persons hud suffered him to wait m an to-rooms and offices, while their very lac , queys amused themselves by sayiug—“ There's j “And mw you’re my last hope. Get me out of Philadelphia. For God’s sake do it: I’m heart-sick for Virginia. I’m freer there, j than iu any other place. If I cun only feel my boot upon Virginia sod, I’ll boa new man.” The author heard words like these from the : ! lips oftlie poet, and went out, and alter some t i searching, lutiuti five men in Philadelphia, who 1 agreed to give a small sum, in behalf of the ) poet. Three of these men were Magazine pub lishers. They acted like men. Ooe was a clerk—he gate all ho hail—a dollar. Another i was a man, who not only gave, but caiue to I the printing office, and invited the poet to his ’ homo. You should have seen the poet’s face, when : the author came back to the printing office; and ! told him of the success of his labors. There was | | a grasp of the hand—and a look of the face— j ! which said much more than words. There was ! ; a tremor of the poet’s lips, when the author ; told him of a certain publisher, who had re fused to give ono dollar. “Not a dollar?” said the publisher, when he was asked. “Not a dollar.” The man who was w ild the author, (wc need j not toil his name,) took the poet- home, and the three spent the day together. Ti. it night those friends accompanied him to the cars, and <aw him depart, after hearing his list words. ; They never saw him again. But they never foegot, that saddest of all sights—a great man whose genius had enrich*- j ed publishers, begging his bread in I'hil.idcl , phi.i ou ahoi summer’s day. One day nows came that tho poet was dead, j All at once the world found out his greatness. Literary hucksters who bad lied abdfft him ! booksellers who had left him to starve—ycntle i men of literature, who had seen him walk the { hot streets of Philadelphia, without food or j shelter—these all opened their floodgates of ] eulogy, and salvered with panegyric the man, j j whom living, they would have seen die in tiie j next ditch without one effort to save him. This is tiie joke of the thing. One day tiie poet sits in a printing office—up four pair of stairs—one shoe to his feet—his ] only friend a miserable devil of an author, who | is not only poor, but also an infidel - tho next day the poet is dead, and from Maine to the Rio Grande the critics tune their pipes, and all tho booksellers, the hucksters who make books for booksellers, the critics who live in perfumes, and write with gold ink on gold edge paper— all burst out into ono long, loud ejaculation, “Great is the poet who is dead! Allah il allnh! i Allah bi-mullah!”— Phila. Sunday Mercury. N* E W 1500 It N.-- Hi,?
