Thoinjisuu (lotivet ol a lecture ht the Tabernacle, Now York, last Wednesday, upon thj •* I'oinbs of Egypt.” Tito eoui.non acceptation of the word toui os, and the associ ations connected with tliom by us, do not prop erly apply to the tombs of They have been called* palaces and temples —perhaps pal ace-temples would bo the most proper si-nilieu tion for them. The tomb of Gel/,uni, which was the fids t opened, is a most remarkable one. This temple is entered through a ina -ive doorway, which leads to a staircase i oiil.uuing twcniy tive stops. Vou thou come t** a co: rid >r, yignr foot wide and twuuty-tive in length; pi mg tlirougti this, you arrive at another staircase. Descending, you come to another which 1 -ads i you to a hall supported by pillars : lioui that into the grand hall, supported by twenty-six pillars, perfect in areluioetur . Around this wall are side chambers, oouiaming the sarco phagi of the dead. In one of these was found the marble sarcophagus which is uow exhibite i in the bntisb Aiascuiu. in ail tiiu compart ments of Ibis gruut tomb, the sculptures ur pa - feet, save one whore it is evident that the own er had died previous to the Completion of his designs. The king, when he mounted the throne—the priest, when he commenced lus holy voeatiou—the merchant, when lie coni lueuced bis business —selected the place of bis . burial, and adorned it us bis taste and fortune * might dictate. In this unlinisbed tomb maybe seen the unfinished drafts of the ur tist.w liicli lines were after wards to be gone over by tin-chisel ol lire sculptor. [The lecturer hoi e displayed a dia gram of the grand hull, 20 feels.pa tro, support ed by six pillars. J The givalc.-i to mb* ob served hi Thebes, is the tomb of the ’Aca.issee. The first halt is lib} feet by 70; pa sing thro* r a massive doorway, you come to another ball fit) feet square, with a corridor leading to the gloat pit, which is probably 200 feet deep, in this tomb you can go in a straight lino )20 h- 1, and its total length is J<fi2 feet. Tins 1- all cut out **f the solid rock with the chisel. The whole excavation covers twenty four llioii-aud square lcet, or about out* and a quarter a. i ts. It 1- iu those tombs that We are lo team tile history ot ligyp 1 , aiidatstrio obtain important information a> to the manner and llte domestic life of the Tigyptiaiis. The sculpture to beautifully pro served, or rather was until it fell under the des poiling hand of the .-avail, or the rude grasp ol the unthinking Aiub. The fact that 11 was shut up in the Uiy rock, far Inmi the influence ol any damps or rains, was the cause ol this. The statuary w hich lias only been twenty years iu the public squares of Paris, is much mole de faced than that which has stood for throe thous and years ill the catacombs of Egypt. in the tomb of the harpers, the several cham bers are adorned with pictures of domestic life, and il seems that the owner hail desired that each of his servants should be with him, us there is a chamber and a suitable decoration for each. The Egyptians used three modes of or namenting their tombs. One was that of sculp ture in has relief. The wall waschipped away, leaving the sculpture raised from it. Another form was to cover the walls with stucco, and the figures were cut into the stucco; ami the third (not often used) w*ns that of painting up on the stucco. Iu the same tomb are a series of illustrations of the Egyptian kitchens. It is plaiu they were no vegetarians, (a laugh.) for there you may sue that oxen are being roasted whole, meat is being minced, and . there is a hanging shelf to preserve the meat from the at- ! tucks of rats aUd other v •rmin. Then you may , see the company seated, the servants passing from one to another, and the feast served. 111 , j unothei chamber we find the furniture of the Egyptians—not the rude articles which we would suppose would ho used at that time, but furniture as handsome, as rich and as delicate as that of uuy fashionable drawing room. The beautifully painted chairs are not covered with linen, but every body can see their workman ship. In another chamber we find porcelain vases, busons, ewers, ami ladies’ fans. In anoth er chamber are drawings of agricultural imple- ! meuis : and you may see the rude plough, which is yet in use in Egypt. In the llelzoni toiub there is a drawing of a cow of the same species ns are now so commou in Egypt. Again, in the same chntubcts wo see the sports and games j of the people depicted, and hero are portrayed i all the sport of the gymnast, several of which j it would puzzle the muscular men of our day * to imitate. Again, wo see depicted upon these , walls the triumphal procession.- offhe kings— j these are their books of chronicles. l)y them, too, we learn tho barbarity of the Wars of the , Egyptians. Weave the scribe''counting before the ! King the headsof bis victims,or taking recount “l j tho light hands—and sometimes the mutilated j bodies of the prisoners dragged at the chariot j wheels of the conqueror. The slavery hislitu- I tion is also portrayed, and we see one iustauco.) where a slave has evidently no taste for the j business in which .-he is engaged. .She is hold- { jug a basin for her queen, who, having taken an overdose of wine, is relieving herself of it as i rapidly as possible: and iu not the most pi. a- ; sant manner. In tho tomb ol'Tophnes, a mon arch cotemporary w ith the exodus of tliacbil- j dron of Israel, we see displayed the whole pro- j cess of brick making with straw, iij precisely \ tho same manner that bricks are made now iu j Egypt. The diagrams which I show you are i correct copies of tho drawings upon t lie walls j of this tomb, and you will see tho task masters are placed over the workmen as described in tho Rook of (jeuesia. In these tombs, also, we find evidences that ; the trades of the carpenter, boat builder, car- ! viage maker, and even the gla.-sblowcr, were known and practised in Egypt three thousand ; years ago. These tombs, also, give ns un in sight [into the philosophy of the Egyptians. : Why should they dedicate their entire worldly wealth to this purpose if they did not believe in the immortality of the soul and tho imperish ability of the body, and that at some time, per haps far distant, that soul would return to re- i animate that body? On ono of these tombs is 1 displayed a picture of human life, no less re markable than tin t from the pencil of the la mented C'ole. In one place a number of per son-are seen engaged in their daily vocations; the scene changes, and we seo them go down 1 to Hades; far beyond can bp descried that bcautilul symbol of immortality, a little child sitting b'*tvve>.n winged globes and in many other placet can be found paintings and sculp tures proving the refinement of tho Egyptians. >’ * that there is no doubt that wlmt we praise as the Augustan Age of art, and the Golden Age of letters, was anticipated in Egypt two I thousand years before. Iu the tomb of Eoni , llas.-uu, older than any tomb yet opened, i found a ball, built in a style so much resunib Hug the Doric that it jnust b.tviS suggested it. In the same tomb I saw tho picture of a bird about tho si/e of a cunnr.v. which, though paint ed iu fresco at least three thousand and live hundred years ago.’ was as ires It and as bcatiti , ful as over. tSomc of the paintings:, those con taining sovoval figures, show that the Egyptians uul a knowledge ot perspective, ‘tin* onlv 1 failure in their painting is the want ot persp-c ----tivo iu landscapes. The tomb ofwhich i have jint spoken was that of a private individual. And the giveks borrowed not only art, lull the ’ ologv froin Egypt. The lecturer here drew a glowing picture ol the wealth an I splendor ■<! ‘ ancient Egypt. fn thecourso of which he s . i 1 that the work.- of ii- sculptors, if not so d*li ente, were pioro life-like and spirited than th of Greece, and superior to those ol Nineveh. 111 tho knowledge of architecture, geology and philosophy, the Egyptians were probably snpc rior to any cntcikporanequs p i.plo. Yet all | ibis has passed away; both Egypt and her conquerors have perished, and in another ,r;,- .martyrs sheltered theins lw< from persecution iu the tombs which have been 1 described ; and ever ami anon the name of Diocletian shows the power from which they i tied. Now the tombs Are used onlv for the habitation of the savnn, and tho war.during . Arabs hido in them, rtir G. Wilkin.-.m made j bis private parlor in front of three tombs. The traveller seeks their shelter as he attempts to take Itis noontide meal : but is surround* 1 hy crowd *4’ dirty Arabs, who will sell him Egyptian idols which an ma le in Paris nn I S'*nt out here'to Inf sold to travellers as green ns the verdigrijs which appears 011 them. l(. uui-t carry 11 way something, however, and the beinl of a king, which is yficred t-. him for three dollars, is finally tendefed at the price ol two cents.
