FRIDAY, OCT. 21, 1 8,.
Roman lVnmnn.
The features of the Roman women are gen
erally regular, and the shftpe of tho face more
inclined to the square then the oval. The hair,
rich, black, and full, is braided and knottod iu
a becoming and picturesque fashion. Tho fore
head is low, broad and firm: answering in its
expression to the lowest part of tho face, which
is massive and compact. The eye is large and
finely sc tin its socket. Tho teeth, arms, and
bust are finoj but tho hands and feet, especially
tho latter, large; and tho wholeframo somewhat
too sturdy and compact* The nose is largo and
almost invariably straight and aquilino. A
clever Scotch woman once remarked, in a mix
ed party of Italians and English, that she ami
her countrywomen looked like restored busts,
with noses too small. The upper part is often
shaded with something more than tho suspic
ion of a moustache.
What is most wanting in the Roman women
is an expression of softness, delicacy, and re
finement. As tho men are like women so the
women are like men. The complexion is mure
like the rich rind of n ripe fruit than tho trans
parent veil of passing emotions which play and
vanish liks auroral gleams. The eyes shines
with a fixed, external light, liko that of glass
or polished metal; and do not darken with sen
sibility. The lips are firm and tremulous.
I have often stopped to look at tho nurses
who were in attendance upon their young char
ges, in fine weather, upon the Pim ion Kill.—
Their heads, never defaced with a bonnet,
seemed made and dressed to go into a picture.
The hair, of rich lustrous black, lay in massive
braids, and was gathered into a knot behind,
pierced with a silver arrow. The complexion,
of a glowing, gipsy, yellow—such as only Titian
could paint—was in harmuney with tho gay
bodice and streaming belt ribbon. Tho face,
square in outlines and compact in structure,
wore the impressive expression of a marble bust.
Rut the largo brown eyes were animated with
a strange mixturo of animal tenderness and
animal fierceness—like those of a tigress fond
ling her cubs. Passion and peril lay slumber
ing in their depths. It was a volcanic face,
which, at a moments warning, might break out
in oxplosious of love, hatred, jealousy, or re
venge. Thus Simirauiis might have looked,
while 3*et a shepherd’s daughter, or Charlotte
Corday, while dreaming in tho woods of Nor
mandy, before the air-drawn dagger marshall
ed her way to Paris.— Hillard ’ Italy.
Coolie* In Cuba.
Philanthropy is a cardinal aud Christian vir
tue ; and philanthropists aro a most amiable
ami oxce'lent variety of tho human race. But
their view of things is, at times, so one-sided,
and their conduct so inconsistent, that tho un
charitable and malicious are frequently hoard,
denying them the possession of those good qual
ities on which they most pride themselves.
They aro in fact, so taken up with their neigh
bor’s affairs, that they have no time to attend to
their own. They aro so anxious to pull tho
mote out of their brother’s oyo, that they have
no leisure to consider about tho boam that is iu
thoir owu eye. Aud they so delight in doing
good, that they sometimes do not hesitate to
tolerate or perpetrato ovil, for tho sako of the
grain of good which they hope to ox tract from
it.
There, for instance, is John Bull the Cory
phccus of these people, and the worthy repre
sentative of all their virtues, and vices, and foi
bles, and eccentricities, and infirmities—whoso
eye is ever on tho watch for tho wrong-doings
of his neighbors, arid whoso tongue is ever rea
dy to proclaim them to the world; would not a
stranger, unacquainted with the history of
John’s career, aud witnessing his holy horror of
such backsliders, he almost unavoidably led to
suppose that tho conduct of John hnn.sclf must
bo at least a? pure and immaculate os that ofah
crotnilc? Would he not bo astonished at hear
ing that tho very crimes which so much excited
John's indignation, and which ho denounced so
fiercely, wore to ncertain extent habitually con
nived at or perpetrated by himself : and that
the said John, instead of being, as he had in his
simplicity supposed, a man “loving righteous
ness and hating iniquity,” was in reality noth
ing more than an impudent pretender—a Pha
risaical hypocrite?
While John is sympathising with tho suffer
ings of “ Uncle Tom,” and declaiming about
the horrors of American Slavery, and main
taining squadrons on the coast of Africa, and
the coast of Cuba, for the suppression of one
species of Slave trade, and one species of slave
ry, another slavery and another slave trade are
being patronized by him; the cruelties and
abominations which fall little short of those
which ho affects to bo laboring so zealously to
exterminate. Bull’s notions of Slavery as well
as of justice appear indeed to be somewhat ec
centric. It is not so much slavery in every
shapo and form, that excites his aversion, ae
African Slavery—and ho deems it sound equi
ty to transfer for a whilo to another branch of
the human family, those fetters and those mise
ries which the negro race has so long endured.
Ho has been charged with wishing to Africanize
Cuba, but it rather appears from facts that he is
socking to Asianizc her! Experience has taught
him that the wants of the labor-market in the
West Indies and South America, wore the great
supports of tho Slave trade, and that unless
some means were devised for the supply ofthoee
wants, his efforts to put down that abominable
traffic, must completely fail, llis thoughts re
verted to the condition of India and West
ern Asia—to the density and misery of their
population and it occurred to hint that
the wretched coolies, as they aro termed,
might be induced to desert their homes in
sufficient numbers to supply tho wants in ques
tion : to come from tho distant East, to partici
pate in the sufferings and sorrows of tho color
ed race. The idea was approved and adopted.
Ships were cncourgod to engaged in tho new
traffic. Falsehood and exaggeration were em
ployed to decoy tho simple oriental from his
kindred and country. Economists rejoiced, le
---causo the markets of tho West would bo in
futuro supplied with an abundance of cheap
labor. Pbilantrophists rejoieed, because they
regarded this coolie transmigration as the
death blow to the slave trade. All entertained
sanguine anticipations in regard to It; and all
-us very commonly happens in cases of tho
kind, were doomed to be completely disappoint
ed. The labor of tho African is still preferred,
whenever it can bo obtained, to that of tho
Asiatic. The old slave trade has not received
. its death blow—it is still wide spread, aud
flourishing. The now—after an existence of
little more tbau three yours, has become, in
cruelty and atrocity, almost the rival of the old.
j And John Bull’s expedient for annihilating the
slave trncio has only added to its oxteut, nml
increased its horrors.
But the coolies, it seems, nro free laborers,
not slaves—theirs is a voluntary, not a forced,
emigration. Now, let us submit for a moment
l that this emigration is voluntary, though it is
well known that it is oftoner the effect of fraud
1 or violence, than of free, unfettered choice.
; But what treatment do these voluntary otni
l grants roceivo during tho voyage? Aro they
not crowded down between decks, where any
other than a sitting or recumbent posture i*
impossible? Are they not put off with insuffi
cient or unwliolesomo food? Is not. their al
lowance of water s* scant as to he rather calcu
lated to irritate than allay thirst ? And yot
John Bull regards the sufferings of these poor
j creatures with the coldest indifference, while
his sympathies nre all alive to the wrongsof tho
African ? But though John’s philanthropy does
not shield the voluntary emigrant from suffer
ing during the voyage, perhaps it holds the
,Egi3 of its protection over the free laborer in
tho country to which he has immigrated.—
By no moans. The moment the free laborer
sets his foot in Cuba, lie ceases to bo under
John’s jurisdiction, ho becomes amenable to
Spanish laws; ho is surrendered to the tender
mercies of Spanish officials and Creole masters.
His freedom becomes a fiction, —himself on
octennial slave. He receives, indeed a miserable
pittance for his services, hut during the period
of his apprenticeship his master has absolute
authority over him. 110 is at liberty to inflict
corporeal punishment on him—to dispose of him
—to treat him with a cruelty,in fact which even
in tho ease of tho negro the law would not per
mit him to exercise.
Tho Coolie may boa voluntary emigrant, a
free laborer, in the estimation of John Bull; but
if we had to choose, we would lake tho African
iu preference to his. Iris perfidious—it is in
famous to decoy these unfortunate Orientals
from their distant homes, and abandon them
thus in a strange land to the mercies of tvrauts
and monsters. Nor can John Bull persuade
the world that, his horror of Slavery is not
stimulated, while he continues to patronize and
• uphold a system which inflicts on an innocent
anil confiding race the very worst evils of ser
vitude.—Artr Y orl’ Daily ‘J'im,*.
