Tile milk man cries “ieehe, j leche,” (I leave the to bo cxu'rev’ted 1 by the linguist,) and whenever a customer re quires his supply, the cows are inilked on tlu* spot, and thus tho purchaser knows by ocular deuiomnrution tii.it I<* g.’i- the uu.i-lulic; :tcd ] lactcous scerctiou of h.s money. iu every i street, at about sunrise, you may meet a drove of cows, followed by a puysnno, crying ••lech-’, leche,” but irfoie eight tho cow.- uro all vvitJi drawn, and all danger of street goers being hw,led disappears. The reader doubtless already pm vivo that iu Hie days of the valiant and stoic IVdro, it ws the habit in Havana, as it is Ii- re, for milkmen to milk their cow- at homo and tu bring the product, considerably corrected and augMcut . od, into the city in cans. T!n*y hawk • 1 ii about the street- crying “lo.ho, lectio.” The first step takeu by Pedro was to obtain, by dint ,<t w.aSch ?nganl patience, lull proof by credible vx itues— -6s to establish that several particular milkmen wore in the habit of adultorafiig the arti, !>, fold. Keeping this in reserve, uno mornii,.: l'edro issued forth. 11** followed in the vv.iko | of one of bis doomed culprit-, nml every time the latter cried, “locljc, l *be,” (milk, milk.) l'edro echoed iustanter, “eon agua, eon ngua,’’ (with water, with water,) imiianug, as well as : be could, thft inilkuran's voice mid tone. As ex pected, the startled paysano did not bear it pa tiently. With high words and curses ho rebuk ed l'edro, who nevertheless made no response, . atood back for awhile, but a? soon us thepuy.-a no moved ofT and began crying “leche, leche,” behind him he would hear another self adding, “con agua, con ngua !” Os course matters soon catnc to a crisis, the parties appeared before (he Alcalde, but l'edro plead the truth in justifica tion, aud up >u the evidence kept iu readiness, he was triuuiph.iiitl}’ acquitted, while the milk man was severely punished. Tho next day Pedro Valicnto proceeded to victimize another milkman; but tho nows of tho previous nll.iir was out, and tho paysano pru dently avoided making complaints. Pedro now had it all his own way. For several days in succession he unmercifully and patiently follow ed the cry of “leche, leche,” with that of “con ngua, con agua,” till the jolco was fully appre ciated by nil tho little boys, both black nnd white, of tho city of Havana. Pedro then re tired from the lield, leaving thcrest to his new nnd youthful adherents. The re.-ult i.s easily > foreseen. Not n milkman could cry “milk, milk,” without tho response, “with water, with water,” being immediately rung iu his cars. — Quarrels took place, blows were dealt, com- . plaints were made, ordinances were passed, but nil in vain. “.Milk and water” continued to lu the cry, till at the request of the milkmen them selves they were permitted to bring their cows every morning into tho city. Thus it is that Havana is, perhaps, the only , city in tho We.-tern World where the inhabitants are supplied with good milk, l’edro Valient'*, in common with his (blh)W-ciiizens, continui*.- in bis old days to enjoy the luxury, und when he dies, doubtle>s the grateful people will build ; ii monument to his memory, us that of a public bcuefactor. lSuffuloe*. A number of Gov. Stevens’ party, now explo ring for a Northern route for the Pueifio Rail ltoad, relates the following us one of tho inci dents already experienced: “ On Sunday, alter a march of some ten miles, tho buffaloes weio reached. They were before and on each side of tho train. For miles ahead it seemed ono vast drove-yard. They wore es timated by some ns high as .000,000 : I*oo,ooo i.s considered a very low estimate. Drawing up the train at our usual lull at noon, a large herd were about half a mile ahead. The hunters, six in number, were immediately despatched, well mounted on spare horses reserved for that especial purpose, and tho whole train had an opportunity of witnessing a buffalo hunt. Tho hunters dashed in amongst tho herd, picked out the fattest of the cows, and then separating tho selected ones from the herd soon despatch them. In less than an hour, the waggons werejsent but a small distance from the route to receive tho choice pieces of the Buffalo. in tho next two clay’s march thehmifers were kept some distance ahead to keep oil the Hu Ha los ; it was tho only way the safe passage of the train could be insured through this sea “f flesh. The puck mules and spare animals following on in the train, too numerous to be separately led. were hard to control, and despite every precau tion and care, one horse and four inules were lost, they getting mingled with a herd of Rutfa lo. Every effort was made to reclaim th>*io, hours spent in their attempted reeov, ry. The efforts were entirely useless. DIIiIiLE&C VREY, CLOTHIERS AM) MRRni V\T TAILOR?!, ’ WARE-ROOM. ’ A. E.
