SI, J BfH. !. <• Khlppingj ln; ei• *i. The New York Shipping List publishes -the ~ following article in relation to the present *nntl prospective conditiotvol'the shipping interest of ■ tliis country: There has seldom been r period in the mart- i time history of tlie country when our shipping interests, in nil'their varied relations, tnuuifes-'j ted so healthy null progressive u prosperity’ ns they du at the preSeut time. Within a few 1 years past, we have witnessed ft ineroirso of tonnage, un i an exteu.-i .u of the Held for its i profitable employ incut, which ma.y will be called extraordinary. Tho cau-> - which liavoi ■ beeu chieiiy iustriunent.il in bringing about j llnso gratifydug result.-are four fold, and ref- j crablo, Jiist to the natural and gradual increase of the general business of the coun try, stiuulating. contnnt tlu i active extension of our Foreign Commerce; secondly, to the do- \ velopement of the wonderful mineral resource's • ul California, calling into exisleueo anew world, as it were, with new wants to supply on ; the Pacific, thirdly, to the new and lucrative trade sprung up with Australia; .and lastly, to i the opening a Horded American bottoms by the liberal provisions of lho liri:i.ih Navigation , Act of 184'J. ! The California and Australia trade neccssa- j rily incurring long voyages, and holding’ out I terms ordinarily more advuntagoiis to thrown- j ers than could be obtained for freights to Hu- ! rope, South America, and other, points nearer home, has been the means of abstracting not only a very large proportion of American ship ping, but that proportion it will be found, in elu ics tn© best description of vessels. The pe riod of that abstraction, of rather diversion commenced some years ago, and lias continued regularly ever since. Indeed, oven now, the demand for vessels udaplodto thogeneral car | rying tiXidu is much greater than our ability to ) supply.- IVe have heard of new clipper ships costing I say from £76,001) to £I0H),0U0, nuking v>,yages j from this pud t*> California, thence to China, of j tlie Hast indies direct, iheru c back home again, turning sullhaent freight money to pay the cost of their construction. As might naturally be expected, therefore, this class of vessels has for • some time past enlisted the exertions of outstrip builders, and absorbed the capital of our ship- 1 owners to a greater extent Ilian that of any I other; and yet v.o repeat notwithstanding ail this, the demand is stilt in advance of the sup ply. The difficulty as to wages between the j shipbuilders and employers, a lew months since, 1 materially retarded op rations and contributed, j in some degree, to curtail the supply of ves- j eels. The same onuses wore follow;d by like i ©fleets, in the principal shipbuilding ports at the Fast ward. Notwithstanding all this, however, a glance nt the statistical lor the two or three yours past, shows a steady increase of this important de partment of industry. Hut the productions of the Country and the constant growth of our ex port trade furnish .more than enough of employ ment for nil the vessels wo have built. It is h fact also worthy of record, in this connexion, that until within the two years past, the bulk of the grain we have exported from this coun try to Europe has Consisted principally of In- j dian Corn, whereas we now freight principally with Wheat, —a staple for which the very, best ! description of vessels is needed, and such vos- ! sels it is certain wore rarely, if ever in greater : demand than at present. Another reason of the I want of sufficient tonnage ihay be found in the • fact that a considerable number of American vessels have been trail .rioted to foreign owner- j ships; and are now navigating nuder the (lag of I (ireat Britain, and other tnuritiuiO nations of Northern Europe. It may also be noted that the constantly increasing amount of tonnage employed in the Whaling business, has divert ed many vessels from other pursuits, besides which a considerable number have of late years been built for this service. The superior quali ties of the American Clipper ship, English mer chants have not been slow in appreciating, as 1 the repeated transfers at Liverpool, which we | have been called upou from timo, to time to | record,.satisfactorily attest. American vessels of the soceml class ha ve also largely found their way into the British inter-colonial trade, —numbers of them finding profitable employ- < incut in the Leal traffic of the St. Lawrence and the Canadas generally, In the luce of these facts we tbiuk it is no difficult matter to account for the present high range of freights, nor to arrive at a conclusion from the promises we have advanced, that tho rise is natural, not factitious nor temporary. Rates at this motneul, are higher than they j have been since the famine .year of 117. when j the extraordinary opening for orv Breadstuff's i for tho supply of Ireland, created u demand for * our vessels, oomride: ably outstripping the I sources of a supply. It is not probable that there will any material decline from the pres ent scale of rates, at least until such time as wo | sec an increase of tonnage commensurate, with tho extraordinary expansion of* our foreign Commerce. This, therefore, is the harvest for ! ship-owners and ship*builders, and it is to be I hoped that the yield will be ample enough to ‘ recompense the losses, and make up tho defi-d ciencies which too often attended this branch j of domestic enterprise anterior to tho sudden j creation of the new and valuable markets in the Pacific, and in the British Colonies of which wo have heretofore spoken. In order to show the rang© of freights at tho port of New-York for a few years back tho Shipping List compiles from its columns statis tics which it says shows at a glance that freights have been advancing with immaterial fluctua tions to the present quotations, steadily and gradually, and therefore tho advance, ns we have said before, as things now stand, is so establised and permanent ns to forbid tho im predion of a. probable ro-action. Clerical Pretlestillation. There is a Methodist preacher, near Eipon, England, seventy years of age, who for forty years has walked live miles every Sunday to preach, and returned in tho evening, lie has , thus walked 20,000 miles; and tho soul pccuni- i ary reward he has ever received, was a shilling I on on© occasion, or a frUetiou more than one farthing per annum.
