Messrs Editors: —The Georgia of
he I‘Jtli instant, contains a letter from H. R. Young,
Esq., relative to the reported arrangements for tin* ,
union of the Savannah anil Brunswick Railroads,
which demands of me a statement of the I acts
therewith connected so far as lam concerned. I
do not seek a controversy on this subject —l simply j
desire respectfully to correct, certain statements in ’
the letter of Mr. Young, and to give the facts which
led him into the error of supposing that the Direct- j
<rs of the Brunswick company “ will, in a short j
time, receive from the proper source such proposals j
for the union of the two companies, as will meet |
tlu-ir approbation and acceptance,” and the Editors !
of the Journal of Commerce into the announcement
that arrangements with that object in view, are
about to he consummated. I entertain toward Mr.
Young the most respectful regard. I regrpt most
exceedingly the publication of his letter, and the
necessity which impelled me to correct the state
ment of tin- Journal, which contained it.
Some time iu the month of August lap', and pre
vious t<> the meeting of the ciiiz.ens of Savannah,
held on the 30ih of August, at w hich it wasdeter
imn< and to prosecute the enterprise of a Railroad to j
the Gulf, under the Savannah and Albany charter, j
Mr. Young sought and had tin interview with me
on the subject ol a compromise, or union of tho S.i- j
vannah and Brunswick companies, and desired to |
know whether I would receive propositions from ‘
the Brunswick company, ol which he was a Direct
or l I replied in the affirmative, and stated # thut
Savannah desired to cultivate friendly and com
mercial relations with his section ol country, that
she had never refused, and would not now refuse,
t> receive propositions* calculated to extend these
relations. He then told me that he was on his way
t > New York, and was determined to force propo
sitions from the Brunswick Dircetois. I predicted
to him w hat would be the result ol his eflorts, and
the minutes of the proceedings of that body, pub- j
fished below, verity my prediction. My conversa
tions with Mr. Young on this subject were such as
ought to he held between citizens of the same State, i
they wen* frank and ingenuous, hut 1 do not under
stand that we were ever very, nearly agreed upon !
the basis of a compromise;'as he states, for neither
party was then authorized to carry on negotiations
cvofi for the basis of a compromise.
Upon the return ol Mr. Young ir tn Now York,
wo liatl another intervipw on this suhjeet. 1 ex- :
plained to him the action of the citizens at their j
late meeting ; that Savannah now p ossessed :i clpir
ter by which she could, from the liberality of the
powers granted in it, not only construct a road to
Mobile but a branch also to 1’ lorida—that by .means
of the latter only could it be expected that any com
promise could be effected, but that we had negotia
tions pending with English capitalists for liberal
aid to our enterprise, and Savannah had made cer
tain pledges to the people oi Florida, and that un
til these questions were determined it would be
improper and embarassing t<> negotiate with a third
party, but I could see no obstacles in the future,
on our part, to a union of interests with the comi
ties of Lowndes, Thomas, and Decatur iu a joint
road from VVaresboio’. Our conversation on .best*
topics was of such a character that f determined ‘
not to have another interview with Mr. Young, but j
at the solicitation of a third party, and in order t
bring the matter t<> a close, L addressed him the
following letter, and in reply received a commu
nication from him inclosing a copy ol the proceed
ings of two meetings of the Bruns.vi.k Company
held in New York, and a memorandum signed by
him.
Savannah, Sept. If, 1853,
Dear Sir: —Having had several informal con
versations with you *n the subject of Railroads, in
which your section of country and Savannah tire in
terested, tmt as they can lead to no practical result,

Company will receive any propositions you may
have to make from the Brunswick Railroad Com

| Mi moranpum of a Statement made by E. R.
Young, Esq .one of the Directors of the Bruns
wick and Florida Railroad Company, who was
present at a meeting held by the Directors of the
Brunswick and Florida Railroad Company held
j in New York, September 9tli, 1853:
Which statement is explanatory of the subject
i matter entertained by the Brunswick and Florida
i Railroad Company as prop r lor negotiation, he-
I tween the Savannah and Albany Railroad Com-
I jinny and the Brunswick and Florida Company.— j
! she resolution passed, in New York, says:
“The whole subject matter now presented to this i
board by the letters of E. R. Young and P. M.
Nightingale, Esqrs., and fortified by their remarks,
is received with tavor and respect by the Directors.” j
I Now, inasmuch as the extent .of the subject mat- ‘
| ter lor negotiation is a limited one, and not set
forth in the resolution passed by the meeting of the
Directors in New York; and it is desirable to ascer
tain the extent and nature of tin* subjects to bone- j
gotiated, by and between tUese two Companies, it
is deemed desirable that Mr. Young should make
a statement, as the basis of negotiation, which he
does as follows:
E R. Young, Esq , states that tho Brunswick and
Florida Railroad Company are disposed to nego- i
tiate with the Savannah and Albany Railroad
Company ; term? and conditions that will tend to
aid each of them with their contemplated Railroad j
schemes, as follows: —that is to say—the Bruns- j
wick Company is willing to submit the proposition
: of continuing a Railroad from Savannah and a Rail-
I road from Brunswick, westwardly id gome point to
j he agreed upon, there the two roads to unite and
. continue on to such point connecting with the Gulf
of Mexico—asniay be selected—and the proposi
tion is to bp entertained whether the entire roads
are to be one common atoek, or whether there shall
be three separate divisions_uf stock and three sepa
rate division bt interests:—these are the main sub
jects mentioned sit the meeting of Directors of the
Brunswick and Florida Railroad Compam at iheiT
meeting in New York September 9th, 1853.
E. R. Young.
It will be perceived, from ;i perusal of my letter,
that I expressed a willingness to receive for the
Savannah Directors, any propositions that Mr.
Young might have to make from the Bruns
wick Company. In reply*, I received no proposi
tions from that Company, but a resolution offering
to receive “ any formal communication which citt
zens of Savannah may now or hereafter, propose
to this company within a period of three mouths’
from this date.” With tho memorandum of Mr.
Young I had nothing to do. lie says it was wril
i bui by Mr. Roberts, but I presume at the dictation
■•I Mr. Young, in us much as his signature is aflix
!ed to it. No other parties having signed, it is his
j instrument, and I acknowledge to have received it
i in the satno envelope, which covered his eommtini
| cation to me and the minutes of. the Brunswick
j Board of Directors. From those minutes it appears
1 that the communication of Messrs. Young and
Nightingale underwent some modification previous
|to its being acted upon by the Board. What was
the character and the modification, the minutes do
j not explain and we are yet to learn,
i Those documents were submitted by me to the
Board of Directors of tho Savannah and Albany 1
R. R. Cos., at the second meeting after their organ- j
j ization They were respectfully received, hut hare,
j nut been acted upon. It is a common custom lor
I public bodies to receive communications, it being j
j respectful to do so, and yet not to consider or enter- i
I tain them. What the Savannah Board of Diroe- !
j tors will do in tho premises, I cannot at tins time [
I indicate, hut it is evident that Mr. Young was mis- j
’ taken, and labored under a misapprehension when I
j he stated in his letter of resignation that the Bruns- |
wick Company would, in a short time, receive pro- |
i posals from the proper source, which will meet their
j approbation and acceptance, and hid tender of re
! signation, in order to make room fora representa
i tivo from the allied interests, was precipitale, and 1
I may add ill-advised. Ipm also free to admit that
j he believed negotiations were going on ; but if he
* will reflect that to conduct negotiations between
! corpi-raio bodies, tho parlies negotiating must bo
authorized to act, and that there were no uuthoriz
j ed agents of either company in the transactions in
I which ho participated, he must confess that he was
i mistaken in his impressions on the subject,
i 1 was surprised to sec the unfortunate letter of
i Mr. Young in the Gcursui Watchman , and still
I more so to find it in the Journal of Commerce , ao
j eompaniod bv an editorial statement to tin* effect
i that “ arrangements are about to be consummated
. between the Savannah and Brunswick Companies,
SAVANNAH, TUESDAY AFTERNOON, OCTOBER 25. 1653.
the result of which is expected to be the construe- 1
lion of a Railroad from th Atlantic t<> tin- (lull.”
1 look immediate steps to rectify the statement of
the Journal of Onnmrrrr, and authorized the edi
tors of the Georgian, Newx and Jirpubhrun to cor
rect it, because in the attitude nt the whole ,]ues
tion,it was calculated to mislead parties in revurd
to the actual condition of facts. It will ho perceived
upon a reference to their editorials, that ca. It editor
has ha tidied the subject in adi Here lit way. Two
ol tlmse editorials I saw nnd approved, but the
third, which Mr. Young has selected for comment,
I did Hot see I am, Itowwor, responsible br the
statement •>! the Republican, that no arrangement
have been made lor the consummation of the union
ol the two cnierprtoc-si as slated hy the Journal of
( ‘anrnrrrr, and that no negotiations are pemliiej
br ilia) purpose. I did also say to the editor of llte
Republican that llte Savannah and Alhuny Com
pany eould m<t properly undertake negotiations
with tin- Brunswick Cortjiany at ihis lime, hocause
ol the present slate of complication of its allairs ‘.
with pledge-, which they would not and will ti ,
violate, on me one hand, to the people of Florida,
and negotiations lor a line of road to Mobile ~n
the other. I have n\v the same desire as I ex- i
piessed to Ylr. \ ,>uui2 and otlieis, for a union ol’iu-
D-rests with th*- counties of I. *wndes, Thomas a it'd
Deeaiur. i ardently desire that union. If I know
the sentiments <*l the people of Savannah, they de
sire it ; hut from citeumstanees not under their
control, they have hitherto had no alternative left
bat to coiislmct an independent road, .which they
are disposed to locate as advantageously Fr tlu
interests of th--se counties ns they can consistently
with the chartered rights of the Urunswick Com
pany. Their resolution adopted at tin tr meeting
on the Ist ol June last, declares that the route pre-
Ix-rred hy them is t<> the junction of the Flint and
Chattahoochee, hut that they are wtljing to meet
the people ot Florida at a fair point on the hbmid
nry between (ieorffia and i'lorida, upon a subscrip
tion on the part of Florida ol SBOO,OBJ. Both of
these routes have been surveyed tit propafation for
any contingency that may arise. Should they,
however, go down to Florida in Hamilton county,
the road will cross the Brunswick Road at or near
Vi arcsbi>ro’ and at the point ol crossing, Sav.-mimh
can cn.ioy commcr* ial relutions with sewrai eoain
ti‘*s of tin* S*u:th-\Vest either hy the continued line
of tite Bnmsxvick Road, or by a joint rotid t.s may
hereafter be agreed upon.
Tim peoule of Savannah do not and have tvivr
enteriiijnca hostile feelings to the Brunswick road.
Mr. Bartow iu his letter of Feb. 21, 1863, express
es their true sentiments on this subject, lh; write*:
derstood if they are regarded os inimical to the in
terests of any of our brethern in the Southern
part of (icorgia. Surely it is the interest of Savan
nah to allure intercourse with every portion of the
State. Her whole history has been one of contin
ued and painful struggle to supply by the means of
aft; th"*se connections with the country w hich na
ture denied 1 will not now recapitulate I hose ef
forts. They are lamilliar to all. Through every
step in this prolonged labor she has encountered
diHiculiics springing from her isolation and her
weakness, fcjhe has felt how mu dr tho ground
gained has cost in the expenditure of strength
energy and wealth, while others from another
point of \ iew have expected more than she was
able to perform, and blamed her laggard spirit,
with an injustice winch she has proudly but keen
ly felt.
The editors of*the Georgian treated this subject
on the t2S.Ii February 1653, as follows:
“Another tiling we may add, while Savannah
feels no hostility to Brunswick, (we should rather
say Northern speculators in Brunswick property,’’
or to any other town or city, site will do what s’ln
can to prevent Drimsvviek, or any other city from
appropriating trade and commerce which she can
make tributary to herself. Savannah is pursuing
no “dog iu the manger,’’ p<di<-y. ll she were, wo
certainly should not sustain her in it. Sho is not
striving to prevent others from building aria l
through Southern Georgia—while determined to
give no aid in building one herself. On the con
trary having nearly accomplished other great un
dertakiugsj w hich have for years tasked to tite ut
most her capital and energies, ahr rests nut, for a
day. Summoning up her strength for another gi
gantic effort, she nr claims to-tho world her de
termination to build a Railroad of probably not
less than lour hundred miles, to bring about acon
nection between herself, South-western Georgia,
Middle and West Florida, New Orleans, Texas,
Mexico and California. She has determined to
build this road hoe.au.se she believes her highest
and dearest interests to be involved iu its construc
tion. If the Brunswick ‘operators w ish a road from
that place, Savannah makes no objection ”
When the Brunswiek road was first projected,
Savannah was not in a condition seriously to con
template the construction of a road to South West- ‘
cm Georgia. It will,h iwever, be recollected that j
Col. J. L. Seward, with a wise forecast, had the
charter of the Brunswick road s modified by the
Legislature, as to empower the company to eon- j
struct to Savannah or Brunswick at its pleasure,
thusgrving indications ol its probable eventual ter
minus ul Savannah. As far back as 1617 ji charter I
for a railway from Savannah to Albany was granted.
This road was strenuously advocated in our city 1
some time previous to the resumption of tho Bruns
wick enterprise. SiffVnunnh had spent h r millions
upon the Central, the xSouth-Western, the Museo- j
gee and tho’Augusta A. Waynesboro’ Roads, and :
had also agreed to expend it considerable sum upon
the Opelika Road .Sonic of the se having proved
to he protitahle enterprises, shv felt strong <-uoueh
to turn her attention to the South-West, !i? having
no charier to carry out lu-r designs, tho Brunswiek
charter being in other hands, -die availed hersell of
•the Albany charter to ncct"niplihh her object of a
connection with tho S mth-West ami the Gulf of
Mexico. ‘This charter is perhaps tho most liberal
ever granted by tne Legislature of Ge *rgi; and
enables ner to construct a road to the western
boundary of the State. .n tho Chattalioodiie, with
branches ih a southerly and northerly direct ion,
hounded in length.only hy tho limits ol tin- Slate.
In a letter received from tiio capitalists of I, union,
who have si* favorably considered our enterprise,
they sav, “it is impossible, even for those not ac
quainted with the locality, io doubt that the route
Irotn Savannah is immeasurably superior to any
other.” The main trunk of this road she proposes
to locate as soon as liie route to the Alatamulia can
be fixed, and immediately thereafter to begin the
work of construction. About fide subscription ol :
@1,800,000 h*s been made by the City to the enter- I
prise, and large subscriptions have been and sire!
being made bp her citizens. She has expectations
ol important aid Irotn several sources. In these
she may lie disappointed, hut she has tile trill and ]
thr paver to accomplish much without it, and, j
whoie ihese cualiiiey exist, lailuro seldom occurs.
1 led n- disposition and will not retort upon the
Brunswick Company thn unkind remarks of !\lr, j
\ oung, one of Hie jlircolors of that Company, iqa- ;
on the prospects of the fJavannah Company. Ii
have never written n<*r spoken disrespectfully o| j
that Company, nor of my fellow-citizens in Gc**r
