JTo will have, says a letter, shortly t' treat an affair similar to that of Kosxta. A Mr. IP-nry Von Oonsche was condemned in 18-I'J, for an offence of the press; but lie tied to the United States in ISSO, and gut himself naturalized as an American citizen. About a year ago he returned to 11.un burg on private business, lie was arrested, given up to the Prussian authorities, and re moved to the jail of Licgnit.’., where he has since remained. 110 has applied to the American Legation for protection as a citizen of the Uni ted States.” Oreat Fire In Paris. A late French paper speaks as follows of a 1 recent lire in Paris:—"The immense establish ment of M. Jourditin-Riboulcnu, at Louviers, the l irgest cloth manufactory in Franco, in which about 1,200 workmen were e.i ployed, was completely destroyed by fire on the 2d i instant, in less than a quarter of an hour the j whole of the four buildings, each five stories I high, of which the manufactory was composed, were one mass of flames. The loss is estimated at 1,500,000 francs. The municipal council has voted a sum of 100,000 francs to meet the most ( urgent wants of the workmen and their families, i who amount in number to nearly’ 2,000.” Tlie French Einpresn. The London Mum in;/ / W thus describes the appearance of the Kmpress ot France, at the i < irand Ball in B uilougne : “The grace and beauty of the Km press was observed to the fullest advantage. Her fault 1.-ss delicacy of feature, and the elegance of her figure were well displayed by a very chaste cos tume of white lace, ornumeuted with ribbnus of violet color; falling half way down the skirt. Thu head-dress was exquisitely b.autiful.— Her majesty’s hair is of a beautiful light blown tint, and it was disposed last evening in taste ful rolls over the forehead, leaving disclosed lb.- cars, from which diamond drops were pond- ! cnr. llcr majesty wore a diamond necklace of 1 marvellous brilliancy, every stone of which re flected its myriad lines, and a pair of somewhat . small bracelets cn suite. Durability of Wood. The piles under the London Bridge have been driven 500 years, ami on examining them in IS-IG, they wero found to be little decayed. Old Savoy Place, in the city of London, was built 050 years ago, and the wooden piles consisting of oak, elm, beach and chosnut, were found up on recent examination to be perfectly sound. — Os the durability of timber in a wot state tlio piles of a bridge built by the Emperor Trajan, over the Danube, afford a striking example.— One of these piles was taken up and found to be petrified to the depth of tliroe-fourths of an inch; but the rest of the wood was not different from its former state, though it had been driven 16U0 years. Georgia. We are gratified at the daily evidences which are afforded of the high and influential position which our noble commonwealth occupies in the Federation. The following extract from un ad dress of Albert J. Picket, the historian of Ala bama, will be read with interest. By’ the wny, why is not this distinguished citizen called to till some political position worthy of his moral worth and large attainments. Wo suggest him ns Col. Winton’s successor in the Gubernatorial chair of our sister State. Let the State honor the man who honors her. But to the extract, Col. Piekctsays:— [Time* <i> Sentinel.^ “The most prospering and enterprising State in the south, is that which lies upon our eastern border. She has nine hundredaud ninety nine miles of Bi.il Hoad, over which run, night and day cars laden with freight and filled with passengers. Georgia is truly a great .State, and a pattern for ours and all other Southern States. Her limits arc so large as to compose ninety iiino counties: the soil of which is as diversifi ed as the climate; yet, her people and products are brought together, in the space of a few hours, by means of the great int rual improve ments to which 1 have alluded. Evidences of remarkable prosperity are observable in all di rections in that State. The water-falls arc sel dom left as Nature formed them; hilt factories and Hour Mills are propelled by their power. In Augusta, the Savannah River hns been con ducted to the most elevated ground, by a long canal, which is studded, also, with mills ami factories. There is, too, a general intelligence existing in Georgia. I have reference, of course, to her public spirit. The people look to the interest of their whole State, and effect im provements upon a scale of magnitude and im portance. Ravines of great depth are filled up. mountains spurs are levelled; mountains them selves arc tunnelled ; costly bridges are thrown across rivers—all—all —for the tracks of Rail Roads. From the Tennessee River to her dis tant seaboard, Georgia opens to her people eve ry facility ; the young, tho middle-aged, and tiie old rapidly travel from one portion of tho State to another. No f>ue cun visit Georgia without becoming satisfied that she possesses u great and happy poople.” Protestant Clin plain at Rome. The Rev. Charles W. Baird, son of the Rev. Robert Baird, J). !>., who was ordained at the late session of tho Presbytery of New Bruns wick, sailed from New York on Sntiirday ol last week, cn route for Italy’. It will be remembered that Mr. Baird has been, for some time past, chaplain to the American legation nt Rome, where, under the protection of the American flag, he has preached tho gospel and maintain ed Protestant worship for the benefit of Ameri cans and other foreign Protestants who might be disposed to attend.— Presbyterian Oct. 22.
