thertory except in our own way ; and if our
readers will consent to reeeivo our jottings in ,
instalments, it will enable us to present them j
also, with our usual variety of news aud miscel- J

Wo arc indebted to Wm. I\ YoNuf., ,

had not time to examine them before going to

this afternoon.
JjZZSP Wo published yesterday sotiv alngtt l.i
matrimonial statistics copied from a Portuguese
paper, giving tho number of tho divorced, quar
rolsome, unhappy, indifferent, and happy cou
ples in Portugal. Those last are put down at
nine only in number. Os course nobody be
lieves it, and not believing this, how can wo
credit the rest? “sis said that figures nover lie
—perhaps not, in propria persona (if we may
bo nllowod tho phrase) but by proxy, they do, ;
and most outrageously sometlm.-s; and their
proxies are, people.
We are frequently requested to put in
advertisements reading across two columns, by
persons who think thoy can be insert'd at ih
usual price; and sometimes they are ordered in,
without any questions bcin .'aslre 1, and the bill
for tho samo objected to when presented. Wo
wish it therefore distinctly understood that we
shall invariably charge double price lor that
description of advertisement , nud in no c. •
will they be taken in a yearly contract.
fpSl” There is to be a Grand Inauguration

evening of Wednesday, tho fib of November.
Among the Senior Manager.', we notice th*-

tho Congressmen to signify their nir.jdnnce.

Xni Hardware Store.
Wo invito attention to tho advertisements in
to-days paper, of Mr. Ginumi: A. M. <'i.i > h i:v,
who is opening a now stock of Hardware, in
Congress-street. Mr. M. i- thoroughly acquaint
cd with his business, and has a judiciously
looted stock, which hi city nnd country friend
will iuspcct, while laying in their supplies.
Wo had a notice yosterday of IVesiden
Pierce’s now carpet, which was bought in Ed
inburgh. A corr spondent of tho Ilaltimore j
Patriot speaks of the purchase as follows : I
“Tho last carpet upon tho cast room of the ‘
Presidential mansion, was of American maim- ! I
facture not Foreign. Jt was made at Tomp- j
kinsvillo, Connecticut, and a splendid one it
was. Why does our modern Democracy go to !
a foreign land for a carpet, when as good , if not
better, can be got at home?”
Now to bo candid, it would liavo looked a 1
little more Amcricanish to liavo bought tho car- 1
pet in Connecticut; but to bo equally candid it
is a very small thing to “raise <i dust” about
Wo expect however it will bo an unfortunate
purchase for the General. His opponents will
bo rolling over that carpet forsomo months, aud !
probably not benefit it much, for political abuse
would leave a stain, we think, wherever it fell. 1
and should the General run again for tho Pres- !
idoncy, ho may expect to got such a tossiug iu |
liis Axminster carpet, os will make him won
der how ho could ever have laughed over Cer- !

It is stated in tho Charleston Mercury j ‘

in Savannah this season, except the imported 1 1
stocks in the ice house.-; and tho weather, as ( ’
wewritois delightfully salubrious. 1

EDITOHIAb JOTTINGS.—NO. ONE.
(from out note rook.)
Perhaps there never was in Augusta, at
any one time, so large a number of persons, ns
thronged its streets, and crowded its houses, j
public nnd private, during tho late State Fair, 1
hold for tho first time in that beautiful city.
Broad-street looked something like Broadway ;
would, through tho wrong end of a spyglass; j
t and the city u large, like some huge hive, filled I
1 rather with butterflies than bees, all in commo
tion, nnd Hitting about from place to place, sight
seeing, and pleasure hunting—jostling, squeez- *
ing, nnd bustling, in a manner that would have !
satisfied the most morbid excitement seeker. I
*• No more room”—“ every, thing engaged,” was j
the cry of hotel keepers early in the week, for i
, the to.vn was crammed even before the Fair
opened ; yet, somehow, people teen accommo
dated, and fed, and housed, and bedded/ in
somo mysterious manner, of which wo can givo
no explanation. We did not reach the city un
til Monday afternoon, and such a load of hu
man freight ns our engine brought into Augusta,
probably never was drawn before over any road
in Georgia. Thero were some fourteen or sis- :
tejn cars in the train, each densely packed wiih
oil people and young; little folks and great
folks; babies nnd nurs *s, and old men: and
s ich laughing, screaming, and crying, we never
listened to before. It was a regular frolic for
all “on board.” Many, very many, wero com
pelled t > stand -some sat on others’ laps—while 1
tho goncrons among the party, relieved each
other by taking turns at sitting and standing.
But we have given you no ilea, reader, of the
jam. Positive y tliccars were literally choked
with humanity, so closely wedged in, it was with
the greatest difficulty one could turn, or change
p -ition. Yet, fuller and fuller, did we g’t ut
every station. “Mercy on us!’’ some pretty
damsel would scream out, in a tone half fun, i
huh sorrow, as a cloud of bonnets and lints, and 1
p -pie, nnd band boxes, and carpet-bags, pour
i 1 u at the open door, whenever wo stopped at 1
a station. “Do Mr. ” exclaims another.
“ Do stop these people !” -but it was of no use.
There was no stopping any body. A universal
feeling of numb •r-one-a tiveness prevailed a
: leoug all mitsid is; it was u democratic oeca- ,
{ .'■ion; and so, when the conductor would scream
fi u the top of the oars, “ Jump io Jwdn sever
you can ! —never mind your baggago—all going
to Augusta”—the crowd did jump in, by twen
ties, and fifties; and then, such a y oil ing of
| boys, and screaming of babies, and laughing
gem rally, as ensued ! There’s no describing it!
But amid all this clamor and gaiety, as wo (
whirled along, the thought of the Worcester,
and the Newark catastrophes, came liko an
uubidden shadow across the scene. If we had
” ran off’,” or broken down* or bad a collision,
hundreds and hundreds of joyous hearts would
have ceased to heat forever ; and many a bright
eye sparkled for the last time, and many a
laughing pleasure-sock or, stepped in an instant
from time and life, into the valley nnd thesha- !
j dow of death! But luckily shall wo not rather
say, providentially, there was no accident. At
least, we know of uone; ns the train went by j
Carnal;, we saw a young man jump from n sta- j ,
tionary car which wo passed, to the top of that ’ i
in which we sat: we heard his feet strike hcavi- 1
ly upon the roof as he landed, and wo believe j
he held on, but wo do not know it. It was a
heavy risk, that jump !
Not only were the cars filled inside, but quite ,
a number of persons rode upon the top of the
train; and thus laden, wo went thundering into
Augusta, nnd drew up at the Depot, where hun-
I dreds of persons awaited to greet us ; some 1
looking for the “rest of their party who wero :
to follow them down,” tho day after their own
departure from home—others, looking for long- i
I er-expccted friends and relatives—and tho rest
to see the sight—a pardonable curiosity, for the ,
scenes cn.-uiiig might have afforded Mr. Dick
ens a felicitous little sketch of life and char- ]
actor. ,
Os course there were mountains of baggage to >
bo looked after, and tho gentleman who was sue- \
ce- ful in securing any without infinite patience (
and perseverance, deserves a premium as a i
managing man. Our “yaller tr unk,” as it was
usually styled during our travels, by tho Bail- •
road officials, (though it was not yellow—only ,
a respectable brown) happened to be placed in
the last car which was opened; and along with
it, was about a ton of other baggage. Ofcourso 1 1
the unfortunate owners thereof had to wait for 4
the conductor or tho bnj?gnge-master, before no 1 ’
could got our property. There wero few Jobs : i
in the party, and patience was .1 scarce article. 1
At last the train moved off some fifty yards, for
the purpose, as somebody said of finding a moro *
convenient spot for the delivery of the baggage, f
Shale of Verdancy ! turn greener still ! Only j
think of convenience iu a melee like that/ Down
went the trunk-owners ri monte, and somewhat
after the stylo of tho regiment of infantry who i
had the preposterous audacity to eiiargo over (
the body of the immortal Pickwick. We had
no sooner halted than it was reported, that the 1
t’otiductor was awaiting our attendance nt the 1
spot we had just loft. It was a falso report, .
but buck goes tho train like the mountain to 1

| the other end of tho train, which had been do- ]

j began to grow hu mus: but Just as the swelling

lions are very powerful bodies, but thero is one
tiling they eaunot do -block up a street with \
their cars. V h n that question comes up, a I,t>-

might} -roar ? no, laugh. There was no help- 1
mg it. It was irresistibly ludicrous, to sec i
ich a crowd of respectable per. onages, running j
back and forth liko boys ut “base,” that the ;
-.•use of the ridiculous prevailed over that of in
jure.i rights, and good humor reigned supreme. 1
At last, and at last, the trunks began to como ,
forth. And just hero, Ictus express our sur- 1
prise that people do notact with tho samodis- 1
crelion abroad which they exercise at home. ‘
When the trunks came out, the crowd, instead ‘
of forming a largo circle so that each one might
•••*. recognize, and claim his property when it
appeared, rushed tip in a body to the narrow
door of tho car, nnd pushed and squeezed nnd
hauled and pulled about in a manner, which was
highly unsatisfactory. Nobody meant any harm 1
by it, but it was so very indiscreet, is our ob
jection. The “yaller trunk” happened to bo 1
near tho top of the car whero wo could see it !
ft-mi our position outside of the scuffle; and so !
we waited till we saw violent hands laid on it; ]
hen we heard tho ob ervation made, “yellow

other end) —and then—wo thought of the home- j
ly phrase, “Go in loinons and take a splunge,” 1
and in we went, with a stout porter behind us,
who had the good fortune to seize tho “yaller”
just as it was about being tossed aside for want
of a claimant; and out it came over corns and
toes, through that dense stockade of legs, and
with the portor safely attached to tho handle.
“Where to?” said the porter.
“Private house,” said we; and excited as was
tho crowd, the words “private house” made many
“1 them turn to sec the lucky man who was go-
I ing to one. Poor follows ! thought we—would
you were all going to private houses, fur many
and many aweary passenger in that throng had
little idea whore ho should lay his head that
1 night. They did lay them somewhere though—
! we cannot toll whero. Perhaps if Mrs. Stowe’s
Topsy wero naked the question, she might give
a reasonable “ ‘tpect,” on the subject.
On Monday, the Fair Grounds wero not thrown i
open to the public generally, and the day was 1
accordingly spent by the strangers present, in j
walking aud riding over the oity. In the eve- |
ning, the Masonic Hull was opened for cxliibi- ;
, tion of a Panorama of the Holy Land. The j
| Campbell Minstrels performed ut tho Augusta
Hotel, nnd Mr. mid Mrs. W. if. Crisp’s lino \
Theatrical Corps at Concert Hall. We need ;
hardly say that immense audiences were pres- ,
out ut all tlieke entertainments. On Broad
stroot, tho listener, properly placed, might hear
ft continus roar of applause, proceeding from
one or the other places of amusement. We
went to tho piny—spent a delightful evening,
barring a headache, the result of the audiences,
appreciation of the Drama, and then retired for
the night. Thun end -d tho first day of the
Fair.
BY THIS fimirs HAIL,
The Fire in Hlillertgcville.
We are indebted to our contemporaries, the
llcrorder, and the Union, of Millodgcville for
extra i .-tics of their journals containing the j
particulars of the late disastrous lire in that j
city. The Union of the 20th says,—
On yesterday the City of Millodgcville was ’
visited by one of the most destructive fires that :
her citizens have ever experienced since the
city was first settlod. Tho tire commenced be
tween ten and eleven o’clock A. M., at a car
penter’s shop occupied by Mr. Lord, on Han
cock street. The neighborhood where the fire ‘
originated, was covered by old wooden buil
dings which furnished food fur the flames. The
conflagration spread to the corner of Hancock
and Wayne streets, nnd up the cast side of
Wayne street to Green Street, consuming soin*-
twenty one or two tenements, occupied ns
stores and shops by our business men. The
buildings destroyed were the carpenter shop of
Mr. Lord, a. barbers shop adjoining the car
penters shop, Dr. Edward’s drug simp, und ,
Galloway's grocery, on Hancock street, Gan’s
clothing store at the corner <>l Wayne A Han

ing occupied by Col. X. C. Burnet on Green !
street. We have the satisfaction to state that
but one dwelling house was destroyed. So that
the members of tho Legislature about to assem
ble will be as well accommodated ns they would 1
if the fire hud not happened. The principal
owners of rent estnte^that suffered, arc !>r. T6tn- !
linson Fort. D. B. Stetson, Isaac Newell, Sea- j
ton Grunt .and, Breed ove, Treanor, Hethunc, !
A. W. Randolph, and T. B. Stubbs. The shop- j
keepers and merchants succeeded in securing a
, large portion of their goods. I). B. Stetson,
; D. M. Edwards and Dr. Lillie, suffered most
by the loss of goods. Most of our business
men have already procured houses, nnd will
immediately recommence business. We are
notable at present to state the amount of the
’ loss, or how much was insured.
Tho Per order says in addition;—
The exact loss is not known. Many valua
ble goods and groceries were consumed, and
others greatly injured in removing. The build- j
ings on the opposite side of Wayne street were ‘
saved with great dificulty.
Col. Barnett desires us to say that the des
truction of his dwelling, will preclude his tak
ing hoarders during the session.
.Many of the buildings burned were owned by j
S. Gran Hand, Esq., and Dr. Fort, and wero not
insured.

On Monday week tho Legislature will con- |

the election returns for Governor, to the Exec- !

Irwin, V bitfield, Lumpkin, Decatur, Stewart

counties will attend to this important matter

We are happy to say that the Engineer, Mr. !

was commenced at Warrenton, via Sparta and
this city, nnd a third of the distance from Mill,
edgeville to M i eon is completed by this time,
iho crossing ot the Oconee, and approach to
and from this city, was found qaito as favorable ;
as was expected, presenting no serious obstruc- |

ious to hear as to the balance of tho route. i
An incident in connection with this road has
been related to us, which is worthy of repeat
ing and of all commendation. It* shows the
right spirit. In running the line through llan- 1
Cock, east of .Sparta, tho direction of the com
pass approached and cut off one corner of our |
fri nd Hardy C. Culver's dwelling. He at that
moment happening to step up and being so in- 1
formed, promptly rejoined, “ Boys, do not vary 1
