FRIDAY, OCT. ‘-28, IH5.{. The first locomotive built at Chicago (Scoville Si Sons, builders) made a trial trip i>n Saturday. The machine exceeds oxpecta t.itions, and ran a portion of the distance at a rate of a mile a minute and from Geneva to Chicago in l. minutes. y/Uft” The sale of the leal estate of the late Samuel Adpletun took place at Boston on Thursday. Thirteen estates brought an aggre gate of $190,000. :7T#** The .Newark Advertiser states that Air* W. 11. Webb has been commissioned by the Emperor of Russia to build in .New York, a hundred gun war ship furnished with a steam propeller as auxiliary power. £■•_&** An effort is about to be made to esfab- : lish “an Irish Republican paper” in Boston. I*. P. Slane, of South Boston, agrees to give ■ One hundred dollars annually until it is thor oughly established. Enterprise* Prof. Jewett startled some people with the prediction, that the late comet would impinge in its orbit on our oarth, and consequently, it was feared, bo the cause of considerable damage. So far, however, was this from frightening the Yankees, that a company of them was made up tit emigrate to the new country, as soon ns it should ho annexed, and were amazingly disap pointed, that it passed by without taking them aboard. They told us they would have taken up itith its tail, if they could not have gut a hold of any better lots. Oil Spring in Virginia. Anew petroliuin, or oil spring, it is said, lias been discovered in Western Virginia, near the forks of the “Hughes river. Jt was found in sinking a well for salt. Instead of salt, how ever, the spring commenced blowing out mineral oil. and has so continued to furnish it at inter vals up to the present date—about fourteen gal lons of oil being produced every fifth day. Sawing AYood by Steam. Two young men of our city have constructed a boiler and steam engine on the same princi ple of the steam fire engine, which they can ! wheel about from one part of the city to the other, and when they receive a job tosnwwood, can raise steam in about ten minutes, adjust their circular saw in the mean time, and in half ; an hour cut a cord of wood in one or two pieces, I as may be desired. Tho whole machinery does ! Hot weigh over live hundred pounds, and may ‘ l>o regarded as a neat improvement and a sav- ; ing of much manual labor. —Cincinnati Unzcttc. Caution. A writer in the Boston Medical Journal cau tions the public ogainsttravelling lecturers, who oruiso tho country over, “explaining the prin ciples of vision,” and peddling certain exhaust ing cups, which promise great relief to those whoso eyesight wanes. Ho has examined tho subject and the cups, and pronounces the latter Hot only worthless, but positively injurious. Ilydropho bin. A boy about 10 years of age: son of Amos Miller, of E. Brunswick, Schuylkill county,Pa., died from the bite of a mad dog on Tuesday of last week. Ho was bitten several times in the hand about four woeks ago. The first symp tom! of the disease were felt on Tuesday morn ing and death followed in the evening. Ano ther boy, the son of Mr. Zuber, was bitten at the same time, and is now suffering with the disease. Penitent in ry Labor. Resolutions have been introduced into the Tennessee Legislature, declaring that it is tho true policy of the State not to permit tho labor of the convicts in the Penitentiary to be brought into con petition with tho mechanics of the State, and providing for a change in tho pres ent system, by which convicts shall be pro- i vented from being taught the mechanic trades. I A Hint. A cotemporary says—“ There is a man up in our county who always pays for bis paper in advance. He never had a sick day in his life— never had any corns or toothache—his potatoes j never rut—the woevil never eats his wheat the frost never kills his corn or beans—li> i babies never cry in the night, and his wife never scolds. Reader, have you paid the printer in advance.” Liulivs Mill! Souls. An American travelling in England, sets it down as ono of “tho sights'* of that country, that lie actually saw ladies with nnf.es—whole soles such as are soles. “I saw one,” says the astonished traveller, “who hail a sole between herself and the ground which was actually half an inch thick, ft was a rainy day, and she (in her good sense) had provided for it.” Well, the English are an odd people, and perhaps their women i/o wear shoes with soles half an inch thick; but a traveller who has any rogard for his own reputation had better not report such wtprios to our American Indies. YViey Certainly will not credit tho statement that English la dies wear such vulgar things, even when the streets are ankle deep with mud, snow, or slush. Golds, aches, consumption, death itself, could not force tli m to adopt such a ridiculous fash ion. The right to wear stout, water-proof boots is indeed a male prerogative, which the bolde.-t champion of woman's rights has not yet invad ed, so far ns our information extends. The Exploration of the Amazon Riv - er. A letter to the Herald, dated nt Bara, (Brazil) upon tho 19th ult., contains an account of the Progress of one of tho vessels employed in the Amazon exploring expedition from the time of her departure from Now York up t” llio period of her arrival in the above port. When within twelve miles of her destination, the vessel was run upon a sharp iron stone reef, through the ignorance of tho South American pilot, and she would have gone to pieces wero it not for the exertions of the commander and crew. The pilot ran away whpp ho got on shore. SI vigil Killing with a \ oiuig U iilou < Snow had fallen; the young of the village got up a grand sleighing party to a country tavern at some distance: and the interesting Widow Lambkin sat in tho same sleigh, under the same buffalo as myself. “Oh ! oh! don't!” she ox claimed ns wo came to the first bridge, catch ing mo by the arm, and turning her veiled face towards mo, while her little eyes twinkled through the moonlight. •• Don’t what?” 1 ask ed ; •• I'm not doing anything.” *• Well, but I thought you wero going to tako toll,” replied Mrs. Lambkin. ••Tull!'” I rejoined:what's that?” “Hew!” exclaimed the widow, her clear laugh ringing out above tho music of the bells. •* l>r. Meadows pretends he don’t know what toll is!” “ Indeed, 1 don't, then,” I said, laughing in turn. •• Don't know that the gen tlemen. when they go on u sleighing p.u tv, claim a kiss as toll, when they er<-- a bridge? Well. 1 never!” When next v.e mine ton bridge, and 1 claimed the toll, the struggl. -of the widow to hold the veil yvore not sufficient to tear it: an I somehow, when the veil was re moved, her face was turned directly towards toy own, and in the glittering of the moonlight, the horse trotting on himself, toll was t aken for the first time in his life by Dr. Meadows. -n wo Caine to a long bridge, but the widow said it Was no use to resist, and she paid up ns we reached it, without a struggle. •• But you won't take toll for every arch, will you, |b„ i..r /” -he asked. To which the only reply was a pra- ii cal affirmative to the question. Did you ever, reader, sleigh lido with a willow, and take toll at the bridges! Curiosities; of <!>ttu-Sli| Wound-. Captaiu Hall, of the lord Regiment. wa< wounded by a ball whit li passed between the 1 upper part of the larynx and tho termination j of tho pharynx, without causing much farther j inconvenience than the loss of voice. In this instance it must have been the superior larvu ge.i! nerve that was injured, ami not the re current, yet the voice could only ho heard in a whisper, and was not completely recovered for years. If a ball should lodge in the tra | chon, it must bo removed by the operation of lyryngotomy. if the original wound cannot be j enlarged : although llircli, says Christopher M roii, hung up a man wounded in this way, i by the heels when the ball dropped out through : tho glottis and mouth. General .Sir E. B.iekenham. who was killed ! at New Orleans by a bad which went .through the common iliac artery, had been twice shot through the neck in earlier li.e. The first shot, which went through high up. from right to left turned his head a little to the right. Tho second shot from left to right, brought it straight. He had ever afterwards a great respect and re gard for the doctors, and a strong feeling for the wounded. The recollection of that regard. ; and tlm advantage derived from it. has made us sometimes think it might, he advantageous f,.r the unfortunate, as well as for the doctors, il 1 ‘•very general could ho nt least shot once 1 through the nock or tho body, before he was j raised to the command of an army in the field: 1 for there is nothing like actual experience of suffering to make men feel for their lellow ereatures in distress.— London Lan< ■<-/. The Springfield Ilorsc Fair, SniiNi.FiKi.n, (Mass.) (let. 22.—This is the j closing day of the National Exhibition of Horses. ! which has thus far been very successful. The i total number of animals entered was about 500, j most of them very superb. Yesterday there ! wero about 5,000 persons on the ground, inclu- j ding many ladies. There was a grand proees- I sion of all the horses, which excited much ad miration. The favorite was the stallion “ ('as- j j ‘ins M. Cla£,” belonging to Mr. Godwin, oj* \ t ; ! ork. At one o clock a collation took place in ■ j tent, where about 800 sat down, and a speech was made by M. 1\ Wilder. Esq., President of Ihe day, who was billowed by Gov. Seymour, ; | Abbott Lawrence, John M. Bolts, ('. I*. Jlol- ! comb, of Delaware, and others. After dinner j 1 the premiums were announced. The first pro- | | imu in (s2oo).for tho best stallion of seven years ! i ;,l "l over, was awarded to “ Cassius M. Clay.” ! All the oilier premiums were for New England i ! >nd New York horses, except ono of 8 lot) for ! i the best span of fancy horses, which was award- ! led to D. Sanderson, of New Jersey. There ; were no. entries from Pennsylvania.* Tho re ceipts of the exhibition have been about $ 10,000; the expenses about 8,000. To-day tho premi um horses arc to be exhibited, and after that a sale will take place. J)I BULH k (AA HEY, clotiii lilts’ and; MERCHANT TAILORS, WARE-ROOM. A. A*.
