Important Improvement anil Ki-otto
iii} in tin- 31 a nit In i-1 ui-• of Flour.
| A recent English paper contains a detailed
account of a r■••markable invention, which is
likely to ellect a complete revolution in the ntan
fucturo of flour. Tho improvement consists in
tie substitution of conical for flat millstones.
It was stated, by a committee of tho Houso of
Hnrliument, that by this invention 81,857,120
quartern loaves, in addition to those which are
’ now made from the same quantity of wheat,
, would bo produced giving a clear saving of up
wards of per year.
Tho “conical” mill is intended to obviate the
delects of the flat mill. The beneficial changes
elVeeted may be succinctly enumerated. First,
he reduction of the weight of tin* running
.-tone from I 1 cwt. to 11 cwt: liy placing it be
neath instead of upon the fixed one; second tho
i-! not ion of the size of the stones in proportion
Os:: :;t to I; and thirdly the giving to the Hones
anew form that of th frustum to cone. The
a vertigo of h .-selling tho diameter ami weight
“Ia uia**. “f which the one is 1 cwt., and tlio
other 3 cw t , will be apparent, when it is oon
-i 1-red that it* effective velocity is 120 revolu
tion? per minute, nnd that this velocity must
Re sustained against the enormous friction of
the grinding service?.
The altered po-ition of tho ruining stone
admits of it much more delicate adjustment of
the opposing surfaces and gives to tho miller
an easy and ofectiv.’ control over the most im-
I ortunt portion of hi* operation. Tho conical
form facilitate.* the dischargo of the flour, nnd
1 o'niut.s the clogging and over heating by tho
old practice. In addition to these advantages,
by a judicious modification of tho ordinary
mode ofdre. :ing or rather by a combination of
the mill with the dre- ing machine, a perfect
- q irntion of the flour from the bran is effected
at the moment the gri*t escape* from these

always improving with tho development of tho
country through which it passes. When the
bonds or the stock of such improvements nro ut
a discount, there is a steady tr ndcncy to improve
in value. Not so with a banking institu'ion.
When it is struck down and goes into liquida
tion, its responsibility rarely improve*. We
have many examples of the difference in the
value of securities of the descriptions to which
wo have referred. Many work* of improvement,
like the canal* of Illinois, have risen from the
lowest depression to a fair market value. Even
the stock of our own rail road has illustrated
the recuperative character of such investment*.
But where is the market value of the exploded
hanks of 1837 ?”
The Drnti.
How s Mom do w e think of tho dead? Al
though we sit around tho same hearth where
they ofibe sat, and read from the same volume
they so loved to peruse, yet we do not think of
them.- Oh, how the heart throbs with wild and
uncontrollable emotion, as wo stand besido the i
dying friend wo dearly love! We wildly strive
hut all in vain, to prolong tho precious life; wo
j follow in deepest anguish down tho dark flow- j
I ing rivet; the spirit of the loved one passes on
i ward alone—and we nro left to linger on tho
I shore of time.—We think, as wo behold tho
inanimate form consigned to tlio cold grave,
1 and hear the damp earth over it. that we will
| never forget the life scenes of tho departed—
i that their memory will always remain fresh
j in our hearts, and almost wonder that the busy
i multitude can move on so briskly among us,
; But the sun shines brightly as ever on tho new
. made grave. Nature looks as gay and smiling
j and the birds sing a* merrily as before.
Again we mingle with the busy, jostling
I throng. Weeks and months roll on—we visit
j the gra ve* less frequently—and gradually ecaso
I to think of the lost ones, save when some voice
i or incident of by-gnno days recalls them to
; our memory. The feelings of bitter anguish
i and bereavement aro soon worn off by tlio ac-
I cumulating cares and pleasure of life. Thus
I we, in turn, must ore long piss away, and le
! forgotten. Huch is human life.

The author of “The Voyage to India,” a
late English work describes a combat which ho
once witnessed in the Htraits of Malacca; be
i tween a shark and a turtle.
“<>nc day, while lying at anchor nnd whis-
I fling for a breeze, the Steward rushed in with
the Mrnnge announcement that a shark and
turtle wore engaged in a fight alongside. Doubt
! fill and amazed at the account of unusual nnd
so unequal a combat, we all rushed on deck
j and there sure enough, wc saw an immense
I shark and a turtle of venerable antiquity, if one
might judge hy his size nnd the profusion of
barnacles and other parishes with which he
was decorated. Without respeot for his age
and qunker like habits, the shark made furious
eharg * at poor turtle, who opposed the dan
gerous jaws of the enemy with the full front of
his back, on which no impression could be made
<n one occasion the turtle did not turn sharply
enough, w hich cost him the greater part of ono
j unlucky flipper. Indignant at tho perversion
j of such an aldcrmanie banquet to tho voracious
and indiseriminating appetite of a shark, our
! skipper intervened with a harpoon but with
! such ill-judged aim that it fell hut-end foremost
] instead on the point; whereupon our disappoint
ment, wo would gladly have pitched him after
if. It lft>w<‘v*r, answerod tho purpose of sear
ing away the shark for a few moments, which
] the turtle made the most of to scuttle off to tho
: bottom, where ho whs sale from the attacks of
his ravenous admirer.
