AOV. 1, IttßS. fldS” The Charleston Mercury, in copying , from the New Orleans Delta, an interesting ac- | count of the little Republic of Dominica, takes i occasion to remark : “The position of the small but resolute Re public of Dominica, dividing, as it does, the Is. ! land of San Domingo with the savage “empire” of H.iyti, is full of interest to the United States. It might be the genn us a flourishing Com monwealth, if our statesmen would see the ob- | vious interest we have in cherishing, protecting, i and strengthening its infant growth. It is the j natural starting point for resisting the attempts 1 of Europe to Africanize, barbarize, aud deso late the whole West ludies. Mr. Calhoun saw this, and was prepared to net on it. Why should j not the present Administration reap the bar- i vest, of which he sowed the sec and. It is a pesti- j lent idea that our great policy is American an- , negation, iustead of American alliances. It is a thousand times better to gather our weak neigh- | hors under our wings, than to force them to our j craw.” Bennett and Kctcluun. A few days sineo Mr. lliram Ketchum of Now York, made a speech. The Herald, instead of : reporting it, us is its custom with other speeches, 1 ut some length, dismissed it in a few contemp- ! toons rent a ks, which Mr. K. considered tnisre- j presented him. Ho asked of the llcrald to j publish the speech, accompanying tho request with a written copy of his address. The Ilemld j refused to publish, and abused Mr. Ketchum heartily for making the request. The Day Dank in conjecturing what was the cause of such ’ treatment, suggests that tho solution is to he 1 I ound in a speech of Mr. Ketchutn's inado in the Court of Oyer t Terminer of Now York, in j the year 1842; and gives the following extract | therefrom:— ••This i.* the character of the libel, gentle- j men: and who i> tit libek-r? James Gordon ! Bennett, the editor of the New York Herald, i This paper, gentlemen, has been established j among us fur a number Os years; and if withjn I this number of yuuis, the t.-i.*teofa large portion j of tho reading community has been viri tied and J depraved ; it an appetite, a morbid appetite, has j been created and nurtured, whi-H nothing .out 1 accounts of flic marvelous, tho horrible, the pro- 1 sane, the obscene, could gratify ; if a restless j and unauthorized curiosity to pry into the se j crets of the domestic and business circles af neighbors, and to drag forth their weaknesses, j their imperfections, their follies, their mis i fortunes, has been fostered; if private scan dal has acquired fresh malignity and audacity ; if our young men have become precocious in vice, and have been led to treat with cor t inp tuous familiarity those things which their fath ers held in high and sacred regard and rover coco ; if our young women have ceased to blush nt indelicate allusions which would cover tho faces of their mothers all over- wit h crimson ; the daily perusal of the New York Herald has ! largely contributed te effect these most doplo- j ruble results. “ Why gentlemen, tho readers of that paper must thoroughly have proved the truth of the liues— *• Vice is a monster of such horrid mien, As to be hated, needs but to be seen : Hut, seen too oft, familiar with her face, first endure, then pity, then embrace.” Vice—Virtue? Why, gentlemen, if your son i.- n constant reader of the Herald, he will tell you that the distinction between them is a nioro joke. He will reason with you stoutly upon that subject—if he has read nothing else. Vice—Virtue? Why, here is the Bible Society, and the Horse Races, and the Board of Alder men; here they go—black legs aud black coats —all together, hurrah! Why, gentlemen, this is the character of that paper. I venture to say, and I say it fearlessly in this community—fear lessly even of that press—that there never, ex isted among us a newspaper which, to half tho same extent, has undermined the foundations of public and private virtue. What does it live by, gentlemen? I speak only of notorious facts. It lives by levying ‘ black mail,’ and grows fat on it. The merchant who desires to got iff his name from tho insolvent list, must pay lor it. Tho merchant who would have his name on tile solvent list to-uiorrow, must pay for it.” Decimal AVelghta and Measures. If our Congress, at its approaching session, can find time to do anything for the people, wc would invite their attention to a reform in tho present system of weights and measures. Our currency is celebrated throughout the civilized world for its simplicity, and a system of deci mal weights and measures, would, when once introduced, prove equally beneficial. Our pre sent system is not only objectionable from its compound ratios, but it is otherwise needlessly complex. What, for instance, is gained by us ing one kind of weight for grocers, another for jewellers, and a third for apothecaries ? Tho French have partially introduced a reform of this kind, and we hope that before long we may bo enabled to use a complete decimal system of currency, weights, measures and indeed, every thing used in computations. If any of our Con gressmen will take this measure in hand, and get it placed upon our Statute Book, we will set him down as a public benefactor, and send him a copy of the “Scientific American” for one year, gratis.— Scientific. American. Europe is just now threatened with the cholera and a scarcity of bread, and if war bo superndded by man to these scourges of God the record of the coining year will form one of tho most horrible chapters in modern history. s£§?* A Baptist Theological Seminary has just been opened at Fairmount, near Cincinnati, anew gothic edifice having been erected for it t a cost of $25,000. Tlic First Bridge Across tlie Missis sippi. Tlte public, says tho Chicago Courunt, will | rejoice to learn that the contract which wo j mentioned some lime ago. has been concluded, j for spanning the mighty Father us Waters, and that before another year lias passed away, Uli- i mbs and lowa will be united together by a ; massive and monstrous bridge. But our citi- j zens will especially take pleu.-ure in the fact, | that Chicago will have the honor of executing this immense undertaking. Messrs. Slope A ; Broonicr, the largest bridge builders in the United States, and we believe wo may ad.}, in the whole world, whose works are located” in our city, and wh are arnotigest the most ener getic and. enterprising men in the West, have just concluded a contract with the Rock Island Railway Company, to construct the snperstruc turo of the bridge, whii li is to cross the Missis sippi from Rock Island to Davenport. The bridge will consist of five spans, 250 feet each in the clear, and a revolving draw 233 feet long, resting'upon heavy stone piers and abut- ! ment. Tho centre pier on which the draw will revolve, is to be 25 feet in diameter,’ composed j of solid masonry. Tho whole length of the bridge with the bearings nt each end, will be about 1(500 feet. It will be built on the princi ! pie of Howe’s patent Truss, and will be covered in. The bridge will use up 100 tons of wrought j : iron, 90 tous of cast iron, aud about 1,500,000 feet of timber. The superstructure will cost $99,000. and the stone work a little over SIOO.- I 000. The whole of the wrought iron work and ; all the castings are to be executed in jChicago, ! and the bridge is tube ready for use, the early 1 ! part of next summer.— St. Louie llcrald.
