the interior, and that tho Aabnntees were
flying before him.
THE 01.1) HOMEftTEAD.
Last weok wo began the publication of
this charming story, by “Mary Lenox,”
which originally appeared in tho Southern
Farm anil llomc. It is written by a culm,
thoughtful and ever instructive pen.
Advertisers nover had a better chance

which Fount of his party sot up for him.
The panio in Borlin, of which brief
mention was made by telegraph a few
days since, wan not duo to any em
barrassments of logitimato con n->roo, bnt
was, like our own panio, attributable to
largo dealings in stocks of uncertain val

The now legislature of Virginia con
vened in llichmoud on the 1st inst., and
Gen. James L. Kemper was inaugurated
Govornor on tho samo day. His majori
ty, by tho official count, was 27,?3D. In
his inaufiurnl address, the now Govornor
alluded to the fact that tho dismember
ment of Virginia during tho war loft the
old Hi ate responsible for the whole dobt,
with Kiich a conflict of claims as to
render u compromise impossible and to
leave both States without romody, and be
contends that the Federal Government
should, under tho circumstances, assume
and pay the debt.

New Voar's Day hardly makes its yearly
round with more punctuality than the
repetition of resolutions of reform iu re
gard to some demoralizing or improvi
dent habit—resolutions which were form
ed n twolvo-monlh previous, soon broken
l hen, and repeated with hut little bolter
promise now. Almost everybody makos
them at this time. And yot, alus! how
few slick to them to tho eml of tho year!
h*nv few, indood, remember them at all
l*»r Miron mouths! They arc promises to
one’s coif, with no security strong enough
to ro.nibl the demandi of case or passion—■
promises made only to bo broken, and
yearly roperftod with the same result. If
to ilo
to i

'ing und progrooaive world
wo would have! But tho uuoivil old
].reverb, that a certain unmontionuble
phico is “paved with good in
tentions,” contains moro of para-
bolio truth than most of uu are apt to ao-
(..rd to it. Is it not a reasonable snppo-
hiiion that the yearly trampling under
foot of our good resolutions, formed
about the first of January, will prove the
paving of our future pathway with re
morseful mommies and sad regrets?
Whatever may bo our future state, if
memory survives the change, tho neglect
of opportunities to reform our own lives
u earth,or to do good to our fellow-moil,
cannot bo a pleasing contemplation, and
it inpiin i no stretch of the imagination
to romvuo that it will make for us an uu-
rvrti pavement hereafter—tinging even
its most beautiful Burrouudiugs with a
shade of remorse for broken |-ledgos,
with her, that wo ahould oducato onr
children to a knowledge of things they
will learn all too soon. We would rather
keep the old mythical charm about our
origin in childhood, and even in maturity
wonld rather obey the laws of nature
than follow the teachings of people who
think they have discovered the secret of
regulating the aiza of families and the
population of the world. When wo lose
our faith in the wisdom of a gracious
God, who has made Ilia laws so plain that
the wayfaring man need not err therein,
want to leave tho beautiful world
God has mado.
Golden Sunbeams (By D. F. llodgos
and G. II. Tonney) is a collection of Sab
bath Bohool songs set for choir* anil
quartettes; and recognizing iu tho collec
tion many old suggestivo airs, and othors
now and equally beautiful, wo welcome it
a* a something much needed and vory,
very wolcomo.
Home Nook, or the Crown oj Duty.—
By Amanda Douglas. Wo aro not groat
admirers of Miss Douglas, but this does
not imply she is not a woman of decidod
ability. Indeod, “In Trust,” “Btophen
Dane, ” and other works show sho has
wonderful ability, particularly in por
traying domestic scenes, and tho heart
feelings. “Home Nook” is, perhaps, the
best of her works, and in tho best voin.
New Songs for Little People. (By Mary
E. Andorson) comes in as a substitute for
tho Old Mothor Goose melodies of onr
childhood. No amount of good binding,
typographical excellence, or smooth and
appropriate versification can compensate
for onr old nnrsory rliymos. Neverthe
less, this littlo book will make an excel
lent addition to tho poetry of childhood,
and as such we welcome it.
Jlis Marriage Vow, by Carol!no F.
Corbin. This is certainly a remarkable
book. We hnd thought that Wilkio Col
lins and Charles Bend woro tho great
nkirmishers on the frontiers of morality,
bat we woro mistakon. Mrs. Corbin rides
u league iu tho advauco. Only in this,
however, does slio dill or in hor delinea
tion—sho makes us pity, and calls out all
our bettor toolings without an impnro
suggestion. It is emphatically a love
story, but one wherein tho moro solfish
impulses are wholly subjected to a high
sonso of duty; and as duty conquers we
wolcomo the story, confident it will be a
useful lesson to ull who road.
Jlhocla Thornton, by Mary I’,. Brail.
This is tho last of tho lino scries of
“Amoriean Girl’s Looks”by thiK gonial au
thoress. Tho book is capitally written
and every gill in tho laud will bo tho bet
tor for having read it.
A Stout Heart, by Elijah Kellogg, is
one of “tho whispering lino Berios," and
it has tho merit of boing good and whole-
some, aud in its teachings docidodly dif-
ditl'ereut from tho uinny classes of stories
that corns out in thoso dayu under tho
caption of “Sorios." Wo do not contend
it is bettor than “tho I'rovorb Sorios, ” tho
“Jutland Hurios,” tb-» “IUoping Hand
Berio*,” “Vacation Scries,” or a acorn of
othors, but it is good and fresh. A boy
or girl will bo better for reading it, and ns
such wo commend it.

Maduid, January 8.—The Cortes re
convened in session yesterday, and tho
President, Castellar, read his message.
Ho says ordor prevails everywhere in tho
conntry except in tho North, where tho
Carlittt's war exists, end at Cartage
na, which was captured by criminal
iuhtirroctions in that city and fortrosscs,
and tho iron dads havo not been recap*
turod bocause of want of troops aud re
sources, but the final overthrow of the
insurrection is certain. Thero is, un
doubtedly, direct connection between tho
Carlists and the Cartagena insurgents.
Tho l’renident says the Carlist war has
been terribly agravatod by disorganiza
tion, lack of discipline and dissertiona in
tlio ltepublican ranks, and bo appeals to
all, in the faoo of tho trouble iu the coun-
oountry, to drop party diflerenoos and
unite iu defense of the ltopublio.
While war exists nothing but a war policy
is possible. The expense of tho war dur
ing the recess of tho Cortos woro four
hundrod million reals. The Government
line distributed military commands among
the generals of all parties, in order to
give tho army a national character.
President Castellar recommends the
passage of bills providing for freo public
instruction, aud for tho abolition
involuntary servitude and slavery
on both sides of the Atiantio.
lie says you mast first establish a stable
government, tbon the European powers
will soon recoguizo the llepublio. No na
tion has any irremovable antipathy to a Bo
public. All countries first desire to see
ordor maintained and protootion given to
the immense commercial interest.
Honor Castellar promises to lay beforo
tbo Cortes all doonments iu relation t
the Virginius affair. These, ho said, will
demonstrate that war hits huen avoided,
whilo the principles of international law
havo been upheld.
