'1'lie story of a orackeil and disiutegrn-
t j,.g moou. which is m ide public through
the well kuowu obaervdory ut Marsailleo,
has point shout it which, if fully assured
us to their authenticity, willttiouhe a goed
dual of discussion muoug astronomers,
'l’he story is of Luigi Uacoiatore, a young
man with an idea nnd a fortune of about
*0 (ioo, a student at the observatory of
Marsaiilea. This young man was so devo
id to his idea ttiat he heaped his little
fortune npoti it, and, with a telescope and
other instruments, set sail ulone fur the
Kolitudes of Southern seas. Before
embarking ho handed to his old
instructor a roll of manuscript, up-
0U which was inscribed the idea
which the youth pursued, and hia reasons
for entertaining it at the expense of his
time and fortune. He believed, speak
ing uuscientiiically, that the moon was
altogether more cracked than modern as
tronomers imagined, and he went to the
Month seus alone, that, being there in
Unit region whero passed the deepest
hbadow, ho might see the sun light peep
ing through the cracked moon at the
time of the next oclipso. He went away
to the South, even to Pitcairn's island*,
erected his rude observatory, gained an
old sailor to assist him, and they two,
with eyes front and instruments pointed,
awaited the shadow. It came. Straight
through the rugged rocks the ragged
sunlight shone as one sees a gleam
through a crack in the door. A ory of joy
came from beneuth the telescope. The
sailor, turned photographer, caught three
negatives of tho penetrating sunbeam.
Tho youth with hi* idea possessed now
proof, to him sufficient, that his belief
was not a vision but a scientific reality,
nud ho writos to his old instructor in
Fnuieo, with all the onthusiasm of a boy
who has stormod a snow fort, and with all
tho exclamation points of the successful
lover. That youug man saw enough dur
ing his lonely vigil on Pitcairn’s Island to
make him declare “that our lovely Rate-
lito is not only a shell, »aud not only a
shell full of cracks, but a shell that is
crushed in upon some portions of its per
iphery, and a shell that is now crumbling
to ruin with a constant, n savage, a fright
ful velocity.”
The old professor at Marseilles, com
menting upon lbo youth’s observations
and records which accompanied his letter,
says ho has “pushed his discovery very
near to tho point of demonstration," and
then tho old gentleman takes a hand in
running things with a cracking moon, as
follows :
•If tho crumbling be connected with
and dependent upon any such intense in
ternal volcanic notion as Luigi seems to
suspend, the liual disruption would bo no
violent ns to project some portions of the
moon sheer out of thoir oibit and down
upon ua with consequences of the most
serious character. Wuch an impact, if it
were of sufficient force, might in turn
dislodge the earth from its orbit, send it
grazing on a spiral into the sun, or flung
on a hyperbole out into freezing space.
Or the same resistless force, in falling,
crush in the surface of our own planer,
break through its crust aud deluge us
with lava and steam, or suffocate us with
escaping gases from our own subterranean
laboratory.”
Is not that a beautiful paragraph ? The
roader may think that the moon is not the
only cracked thing in existence, but re
strain the thought, for the above occurs
just over the signature of Yvon He Pon-
tecoulant, of the Observatory of Mar
seilles.
The thought that tho moon may be
thinking of sending a heavy shell hither
to avenge the many insults which men
have heaped upon her is the only one
which presses after the eager Marsellaise
have done their worst. While we do not
believe the moon or any part of it is com
ing hither until tho great creative spring,
now regulating planetary motions, and
ruling thoir gradual approaches, shall
have wrought its porfoct svork, still we pro
test against giving the moon any further
ground for cvm consequential damages.
We doubt not sho is proud of her beauty
and jealous of tho adoration which it
command-'. It is uoitber safe, nor polite,
nor wise, to call her a cracked and suici
dal termagant.
Tho Loudon correspondent of the New
York World, under date of Wednesday,
the 11th., the third day of tho extraordi- 1
nary fog that enveloped tho city, men- !
tions, among other things, the great mor
tality it had caused muuug tho cattle on
exhibition at the annual show of the
Smithfield Clnb. Oil Monday, turn days
before, there was uot a single case of
siolcnoss among the largo number that ap
peared before the judges, but by Wed
nesday at least one third had disappeared
from the stalls. The explanation of this
singular fact is that the long continuation
of tho fog had so vitiated the air as to poi
son thorn outright. Twouty-flvo died in
twenty-four hours, and ninety-three had
to be removed duriug the same time.
None of them, no matter how big aud
hardy, seemed proof agiiust the attack of
this Htrange enemy, which seemed to
single* out cows, bulls and oxen for de
struction, leaving slump and hogs unharm
ed—the latter appearing not at all affected.

It is not a ploa-aiut thing to bo editor
