this connection it may not
amiss to say that tho Bourd is
posud of oxcollont firemen, all of
m have seen service and proved them-
dh equal (o all euiergunciev. Air. Wil
liams has made a public-spirited and pop
ular Chief, having filled his high position
dit to himself and satisfaction to
tho public. Assistant Rosette is a votoran
of muny corfhgrations, having boon in
service of the department for nearly a
piartor of u century, and one who still
JiHchurgos his every duty with pride and
pleasure. Etheridge and Francis,(though
tly coming under the bond of vet
erans, are faithful to duty nnd efficient in
notion. Altogether wo have a department
of which any city might well afford to bo
proud.
IIViaf (Joe* With the Money ?
he figures show that 14."*0 halos of cot
ton havo boon sold in Columbus during
tho past week at an nvorage of $70 por
halo—making a grand total of $101,500
•ly $17,000 por day paid out for
cotton. And yet, from nppourancos,
trndo has not beop very active. Tho
question naturally nrisea—“What goes
with so much money?" Much of it wo
iiupposo 1ms gone into the hands of ware
house men nnd grocery and commission
merchants for supplies advnnced to make
the crops. Through these it goos North,
West and elsowhoro to pay prime cost of
said supplies. Tho romuiniug money
which has not gono in this way, 1ms, in a
largo uieasuro, found its way to the bot
toms of planters' pockets, whence it will
come to light as urgent necessity may re
quire. From tho general impression
winch prevails that tho farmers have
morn monoy than usual nt this season of
tho yonr wo are Induced to hope for
improved business reaotiou during the ap
proaching spring and summer.
Low Trice* K migration, ,to.
A gentleman from u neighboring t
in Alabama informs us that on Tuesday
lari 1m saw eight unilos—young but
shabby sold at prices ranging from $13
to $30. The same mules one year ago
cost $150 each. Hor.soi wore sold
proportion. Our inforiunut states
that the emigration of negroes from that
part of Alnhamu is immense—every trail
being crowded. The planters of that re
giun havo sufferod greatly from short
crops, and hence tho disposition of freed-
met) to seek a bettor country farther Weal.
They may find it, but certainly uouo whoro
they will not have to labor assiduously
aud energetically for u living. Many ut
last will find themselves the dupes of
mouoy-mnking and unprincipled ngeuts,
aud will sigh many a time to return to
the old homesteads of their youth.
A Card Trick.
A country youth named Dudley, yester
day took out a warrant bofore Justice
Chappell for a boy named George I’ryor,
alleging that suid I’ryor aud accomplices
had cheated him out live or six dollars by
a card trick. When an otficer went to
urrest l’ryor it was discovered that ho had
tied to Alubuiua. An olJer brother hear
ing of the affair, paid Dudley buck his
money and compromised the mattor.
Tricks by which tho uuwary are in
veigled are numerous, and wo warn white
nud black against them. The best aud
only right way to get money is to work
for it. Trusting to luck has ruined muny
11 man. It is n little singular, however,
that when country people got tho bettor
of town sharpers we never hear of tho
method by which they do so.
