Money is scarce, yot it cauuot bo de nied there is still a great deal of hard cash hid away in the houses of mechanics and farmers. This fuct. became evident in our city when, some time ago, Captain T. E. Blanchard announced to the people that he had determined to sell his unri valed stock of dry goods at cost for cash. At once his store bcc two crowded by those desiring to take advantage of his offer, all of whom became convinced of the truth of bis public statement. Cap tain Blanchard has wisely determined to continue the sale of his goods, believing it will bo to the advantage of himself and costumers to oontinue selling at his for- low rates. We can commend this sterling establishment and its energetic head and courteous attendants to all who desire clothing of every price, style, and variety. The most finished and masterly imper sonation ever witnessed in Columbus will he presented by Lawrence Barrett, on Thursday the 15th, at the Opera House. A Huge Baxter Monument. Take the sheets of tiio Daily und Week ly Enquirer and Sun for a year aud pile them on each other just as they are taken from the press, and they will build a monument 1034 feet high. This is loftier than the heights of all the church steeples in the city, with the Court House, Geor gia Homo and nil the manufacturing buildings ranged on top of them, aud the monument will last forever. Philosophers teach that no impulse in nature is lost. A stone dropped in a riv er will create a circle of waves which con tinue widening till they reach the utter most shores of occean. Bo a truthful thought put in motion by a newspaper widens nnd extends, surmounting the op posing forces bf error, until it lands upon the endless boundaries of eternity. Who can calculate the tremendous influence which the daily and weekly press sends forth to bless humanity. If the impulse be error, it is soon overcome by the stronger forces of truth. Big Law Suit Humored. Street rumors wore plentiful last after- Q oon, nnd for the past week, of a well known lawyer suing a promineut financier “nd manufacturer for libel. It is said the ■nit grows out of the manufacturer and financier accusing the lawyer, in a pub lished pamphlet, of unprofessional nnd dishonorable conduct as an attorney. It »■ rumored that lion. B. H. Hill aud Gen R. Toombs have been retained by the lawyer to prosecute Lis case. We await developments. The matter has become 00 general that we are compelled to men- bon it. The case may rerult in tremen- dous damages, or the dismissal of a dis tinguished attorney Horn the rolls, o- a °nmpromiso. Still Another. Mr. John Cochran, of Browne Wile, was tnarried, on Thursday last, to Miss Jennie Golden, of Atlanta daughter of Mr. F Golden, late of Girard. The newly nur- reached home yesterday morning, ■nd rumor had it yesterday that they t° be handsomely “cow-belled' and panned" last night—the bridegroom here- t°fore being an efficient leader of that tonaioal organizttion Sneoaas and hap- ***••• attend theta. THE JOJIX KIXG CASE. Judge Woods, of the Circuit Court, Over, rule* the Decision of Judga Er shine. It is well known that an attempt has been made to put Mr. John King into bankruptcy. Major R. J. Moses is the eounsel for the petitioners; Gen. Ban ning for Mr. King. Judge Erskine, in the U. B. District Court at Savannah, some time since, dismissed the applica tion to throw Mr. King iuto bankruptcy, on the ground, as wo understand it, that the papors showed no evidence of indebt edness. The case was appealed to Judge Woods, of the U. B. Circuit Court, and heard the early part of this week at Mo bile. Fiorn the judgmeut given, it will be noted that Judge Woods reverses the decision of Judge Erskine, decides the pupors show evidences of indebtedness, und the case must go to a jury. The following the judgment: United States Circuit Court, Fifth Circuit, Southern District of Geor gia—In re John King—Petition of re After hearing argument upon this case, it is considered and adjudged that the averments in the petition ol H. B. Clailin & Co. are sufficiently sot out to make a primn facie case of indebtedness, and that the issue should have been submitted to the jury under the demand for trial upon the petition as filed. The judgment of ihe District Court dismissing the petition is therefore reversed. W. S. Woods, U. S. Circuit Judge, 5th Circuit, Southern District of Georgia. It will be remumbeied that Mr. King, u baukor, failed, aud assigned his property to John l’eabody, Esq., and Col. W. L. Salisbury, as assignees, for the benefit of his creditors. They have already declared a dividend of twenty per cent., with the promise of at least thirty per cent. more. If tboy had not been disturbed by the bankrupt proceedings, the distribution would probably long since hove been set tled. H. B. Clafiiu appears to be the creditor who chiefly desires the bankrupt cy declared. Local Sjtlinters. Yesterday was clear and beautifal. No Mayor's Court. The Julia left for Apalachicola and Bainbridge. The run-off at Juniper did bat little damage. The Local acknowledges the responsi bility for the poor conundrums which have appeared among the splinters. ! There someho v prevails au impression I that Columbus, owing to the pauic, did I loss business last year thau the year be- lfore. Listen to what the sworn figures | say. From October 1st, 1871, toOotober 1st, 1 1872, the sworn returns of sales from all I quarters, except cotton, show business I transactions to the amount of $2,704,250. The tame returns, with ihe same taxes I aud same except onr-, show the business ] from October If-1, 1872, to October 1st, 1 1873, to have beon $5,329,205 ; showing i gsiu over the preceding your of $505,- )05. As goods vere lower lust year than I the preceding one, the sales must have I been much greater to show this largo I increase in genera’ business. Last year we leceived iu round num- 1 bevs 58,000 bales of coltou, averaging J 17o. per pouud, or $85 per bale. The I cotton sales hence amounted to $4,980,- I 000. The Columbus factories took $080,- I 000 of this amount, whioh was paid for I by our own city corporations, aud pro- | bably $200,000 was takeu by our own I citizens on speculation Anyhow, the I calculation makes in round numbers $2,- 1 100,000 for planters above what they paid j to Columbus, and the area which fui- I nishes cotton hero may be circumscribed I by a radius of thirty miles. The figures of sales have been furnish- d us by our accomplished and ohligiug I Clerk of Council, Mr. M. M. Moore, who I keeps his books so correctly, thut all suoh | data are constantly at his command. The Columbus fiscal year ends October 1st. Justices Courts. Bob Hudson wa : I eforo Justice Shi\ere, >n Friday, under warrant for assault aud I battery upon the persou of Aaron Drake, colored. Said Hudson was put under n $50 bond to uppear before next term of I County Court. A possessory warrant case—J. T. Hum- J ber and wife vs. Robert Thompson, for I the recovery of a couple of mules, was 1 tried boforo Judge Williams yesterday. After hearing of the evidence iu the case, the Court awarded the property to the ompiniDaut, upon his giving boud aud ocurity according to law. -♦>-»-«» The Grangers—Public Installation.
