of intorest linvo about subsided, yielded
doubtless to the absouco of money to on-
nble any one to indulge iu fronke or
pranks within tho law or out of its pro-
tection. Itf the way of nmusomenta, we
havo had nothing worth tho name tho on-
tiro season; quiet reigns supreme along
ltailroad Btreet; but for the giugliug of
liells as tho various trains arrive and de
part, ono might suppose himsolf in' a
country villago.
After two days and nights of rain and
oonsoquent slush, the sun comes forth
bright and oheery thiB morning, lending a
charm to lifo, notwithstanding our gloomy
surroundings.
Iu reply to a Friend to Progress, who
writes to know at what oxpouso Opelika
could bo lighted with gas, we have to say,
that unless ho would spocify how much of
tho city should be lighted, and to what
extent, it would be impossible for an ex
port oven to say. Supposo wo suggost
for you, and say light ltailroad, Chambers
aud Tallapoosa streets from the churches
—about 100 burners. If we did not mis-
undorstaud the agent of Guinin's gas, Ur.
Holland, when here soino weeks since,
the preparation for so many lights could
bo furnished for nn outlay of $2,000.
Were they prepared, the coBt would bo
hardly so much as kerosino oil, and not at
all dangerous in tho using. Wo will cheer
fully give “Progress” nny assistance pos
sible in bringing about so desirable a
matter ns lighting the city.
We shall cnll upon subscribers who nro
iu nrrears to Enquiber to-morrow and tho
day following with their accounts. Wo
hopo they will cheerfully roBpond.
Ku-Klux lasc.
Ou yesterday two gentlemen from Tal
lapoosa wero brought beforo Commission
er liyrnau by Marshal Williford, charged
with illegally arresting and holding the
corpus of ouo , a gemman of color,
contrary to tho laws mado and provided
in such cases. The man aud brother did
not complain of any harsh treatment
whatever! ou the contrary Towed they
was mighty good to him. The notion
came up upon the holding him without
warrant or law, and charges tho accused
of illegal arrest, because ho was followed
from Ttfllapoosa nnd brought to grief in
Chambers. Wo loft MoUoy vigorously
pummeling tho law books to drive their
contents, it seemed, into the mind of Mr.
Commissioner,nndso send thenrroslorsfor
a sensou to a colder climate than they are
wont to enjoy, aud Col. Karnes blandly
smiling a triumphant acquittal. Tho ease
will be decided to-day, when, we have no
dmibt, His Honor will dismiss tho nrrest-
cd aud the caso.
Foolishness.
Tho case recited above strikes us as be
ing exceedingly" foolish and expensive.
The inside facts are these : Tho negro
who had tho parties arrestod owod one of
them about $100 for supplies furnished
last year, and had agrood to work upon
his farm this year to pay tho debt. Fail
ing to do so,- nnd stepping over iu Cham
bers to avoid his croditor, he is pursued
under a legal warrant, revised in Cham
bers, and nrrosted by a propor officer for
obtaining goods' under false protenses.
Four or five good citizons are arrested for
violation of tho Enforcement act, tho cry
of Ku-klux raised, aud n loss of two or
throe hundred dollars sustained. Mou in
offloe must bo hard pressed for costs
when such absurd charges are preferred
against thoir neighbors and vigorous
efforts made to sustain thorn.
