Estimate of the Cotton Crop.
Every one in the South is moro or less
interested in tho extent of the cotton
crop of last year, for on it depends tho
prosperity of our entire section and
individual inhabitant. Guo hundred and
twenty-four members of the New York
Cotton Kxchaugo have subiuittod their
statements. The average of forty-one
receivers is 4,021,403; llfty brokers, 4,-
132,480; twenty-one exporters, 4,150,
007 ; Iwolve local operators, 4,143,083.
factory 'Takings - Adcuntayei of Haring
Manufactory
From warehouses, our factories, despite
tho hard times and thoir runniug on throe
fourths time for a short period, have
taken fioih warehouses, in round unm
berH, about 1,000 hales of cotton—about
600 less tbau last year satno time. It is
thought thoir takings outside of factories
will be larger than last year. This 1,000
bales, estimating nil at low middlings
and at the present prico they would hav
commanded at Columbus, would have
brought, if sold, $120,000. They passed
through our mills, howover, ami their
value was increased three-fold, making
them worth $378,000 in throe montliH
This leaves Columbus tho gainer, by
means of our manufactories, $252,000.
Id a year our cotton mills, by inoroasod
values, add millions to tho cotton crop
of this section.
What city in Georgia, whoso mills were
totnlly destroyed by tho Federate in 18C5,
can muko anything hko a similar showing
in suob times ns we have had since Sep
tember i What place in the South can
show suoh material advancement in eight
years ?

County 1‘hynician.
The Commissioners yesterday awarded
to Dr. J. W. Pitts the offleo of County
Physician, his beiug tbe lowest bid. The
About Raising Meat.
The following extract of a letter from
a farmer in the neighborhood of Butler,
Ga., to a gentleman of this city, tells how
onr country friends may raise their own
bacon at a comparatively trifling cost :
It would astonish you to see, compar
atively speaking, bow small a quantity of
corn our fattening bogs consume. When
our corn is gathered, and peas for seed
and table use put up, our hogs take the
golds ; and wb^n those are eaten out, they
are put upon the potatoes, upon which
they become fat enough to kill. From
tho potatoes we put them in close pons,
and there feed them on corn for eight or
ten days. Wo thon commence killing, if
tho weather suits. A neighbor, two years
ago, put up a few hogs, from which bo
realized 1,835 pounds of as nice pork as
you over saw—and tho hogs from which
it was made had only been fod two and
half bushels of corn whilst fattening.
This year he gives thorn none, but will
mako plenty of meat. Any of our pino
land that will produce fifteen bushels of
corn, will produce, if well and profitably
cultivated, two hundred bushels of pota
toes. These potatoos, for the feeding of
hogs, aro equivalent to one hundred and
thirty bushels of corn, at least. Now,
laying aside tbe fact that tho cultivation
of an acre in potatoes costa far less than
the cultivation of an acre iu cotton, the
Southern people still will get their meat
from Kentucky and Ohio, anil plant cot
ton to pay for it. Tho practice, if long
continued, will mako thorn beggars. J hoy
aro doing another thing, equally ruinous.
Thoir flour and wheat nearly all comes
from tho West, when every farmer in
Georgia could make sufficient wheat to
aupply his family ; and liis wheat fields,
after roaping, will richly repay him for
tho rent of his land, tho seed sown, aud
all tho labor he spent upon it, in rich pas
turage for his hogs and working stock
during the summor. ^Rut it is thought a
groat thing to mako a big crop of cotton,
and it seems that, to do this, our farmors
aro willing to sucrifico thoir independence
and everything else.”
Jiarrett at the Opera Jlou»e Last Night.
Barrett drew un audiouco which only a
groat actor can attract in Columbus. The
assemhlngo was largo and rofinod, though
tho atmoHplioro was very cold, and money
exceeding scarce. Of course, tho entiro
interest of tho play conterod upon Richard
III, personated by Barrett. )Io is one of
tho most superb renders, and has a mag
uificotit conception of tho charactor of
tho cruel, scheming, subtlo Richard. In
tho funeral love-making and many othor
passuges, and especially iu tho dreaming
and aftor scene, he manifested tho ge
nius of 'a groat actor. Wo do not
think, however, that Richard is Barrett*!
best character, nor does ho appoar to tho
host advantage in tho role. IliH make-up
and appoarnneo are too youthful for onr
conceptions of tho most morcilass, yet
most ambitious king, England ever pos
sensed.
Ho was fairly supported, and tho entiro
play passed oft’ to tho great enjoyment
aud gratification of tho largo uiuliotice as
sembled.

.—The physicians, lawyers and minis
ters of Columbus will compare well with
similar classes of any city. Our business
men rank amoiig the soundest aud most
sagacious in the laud. Our ladies can't
ho heat iu beauty aud iutelligence, and as
for babies they are moro numerous and
plumper than anybody’s.
Money.
Money is scarce, yet it cauuot be de
nied there is still a great deal of bard
cash hid away in the houses of mechanics
aud farmers. Tbe fact became evident
in our city when, some time ago. Captain
T. E. Blanchard announced to the people
that be had determined to sell hia unri
valed stock of dry goods at cost for cash.
At onoe his store became crowded by
those desiring to take advantage of his
