Disgraceful Rowdyism In IJirard.
J>el ween 12 and 1 o’clock Sunday morn
ing a drunken loafer named Hicks, who
had boon in Girard about nix or eight
months, went to the residence of MrH.
Rohiuolt and daughter, and frightened
thorn away from homo. Mr. Portorvont
was sent for who got tho man off aud
started him on his way. Shortly after
ward the liquor-crazed individual wont
back to Mrs. Uabinett’s, broke in at a
window, demolished furniture, glasses,
Ac., burned a fow things, stole fivo or six
dollars from u bureau drawer, nud with u
pistol and knife iu hand, threatened to
kill overyhody who ciimo in his way. Tho
badly frightened ladies fled to neighbor
ing houses for protection. Several muti
congregated and got tlio fellow away from
the bouso. They started with him to Gi
rard, but ho cut a Mr. Cobb iu tho hand,
and finally made his escape, running anon
of Mr. Portorvont up tho road in extra
double quick. A parly was gotten togeth
er Sunday to arrest the drunken despera
do, but he could not ho found. NVo hope
ho may yot he discovered and arrested, ns
there is, or ought to bo, a placo in Iho
Pouitoutinry for nil such degraded charac
ters. Mrs. Robinett is a worthy and hard
working lady, and much sympathy is felt
hi her behalf.

•Reports reached town yeuterduy that •).
L. Davis, Jr., was killed on Suuday, near
Crawford, Ala., by A. ft. Eiland, a former
treasurer of Russell county. The killing
was caused by cuts from a knife in tlio
ulnlouiou. Particulars are meagre, though
wo hoar that a dispute arose out of uu old
grudge About a debt one owed the other.
It is also stated that Davis'was in liquor,
and iiuido the first pass with a knife. Tlio
two, it is said, woro relatives.
Mr. i'euhody** Letter The North and
South Hull road.
Mr. Peabody has a letter iu another
column explaining tho terms of his hill
concerning tlio issuance of bonds by cor
porate towns and cities.
NVo could not learn from tbo officers of
the road tho text of the North and South
bill referred to, us they luul no idea Mr.
Peabody contemplated such a bill. Thb
Superintendent informs us that ono hun
dred convicts enu complete tho grading
between tho terminus aud LuGrango in
loss than three months. NVo think tbo
company relies upon tho bill referred to
by our Athiutn correspondent, though
this was more implied than stated, the
oftleors being very reticent, tint hopeful
that their labor of years would y
crowned with succoss.

NVo ufiderstaml tho members of this So-
eiety are contemplating rnakiug an effort
to obtain funds to provide thmnsol^ea with
suitable regal in for officers and the neces
sary jewels of the Order. Would it not
be well for the Indies of tho community
to interest themselves in this matter aud
insist the “Friends" in raising tho neces
sary funds for the purpose 'i NVo are sure
the young iuou composing tho Order
would appreciate highly such nu effort iu
their behalf, aud would feel nerved for n
stronger eoutliet with the demon of iu-
tompornuce. Though tho Order is in
creasing numerically, it is still financially
j weak, aud to feel that the Indies of the
community sympathize with it

** Truth is Mighty.*•
When in tho early fall Joseph A Bro.
announced their purpose to withdraw
from the dry goods business, and their
resolve to soil all tho goods on hand at
cost for cash, they did not mean to got
rid of thoir stock ou band with tho view
of renewing, hut meant every word con-
vcyod iu thoir invitation to tbe public.
They have sold a large quantity of goods,
but it is small compared with tho maguifi-
cout stock they have on hand. Beiug
still determined to quit the dry goods
business, tho firm will continue to sell
their unrivaled stock of dry goods of
overy description, till the supply ou baud
is exhausted. So far ovory person has
left tho store of Josoph A Brother satis
fied that the promises made woro realized.
Country merchants, mechanics, farmers,
and citizens of overy class, will nover
again have such au opportunity to buy
superior goods cheap. Tho attention and
patronage of Granges is particularly iu-
vited. _ jal8 tf
Attention !
As my Adduess on elementary Aoiu-
oui,tubal Chemistry, teaching tho cheap
est and shortest meaus for procuring and
compounding manures, is enthusiastically
received aud heartily endorsed by ulmost
every intelligent planter in this section,
and tbut I may be compensated iu a meas
ure somewhat commensurate with the
acknowledged merits of tho production
aud valuo of the information conveyed,
I do from this date establish tho price at
50 cents por copy. In consideration of
this change, I do hereby agree to ro-
fund the money to any farmer who, after
reading the production, will certify to mo
he in not fully satisfied with tho invest
ment. Thorn is no slavory so hopeless
as that which compels a man to support a
family by tho cultivation of poor laud.
Tho problem to bo solved by the South
before wo can hope for agricultural recu
peration and prosperity, is cheap and re
liable manures. Tbo Address noire* that
problem. I defy tho agricultural or sci
entific world to disprove ono fact or posi
tion taken iu tho Address.
