J'HUKSDAV JANUARY as>. i«74.
farmer^ department.
a. PEABODY, - - Editor.
sai-utatohy.
It, is near a quarter of a century muco I
had the chnrgo of the department of this
journal which I am about to resume. In
that flight of time what changes have
come! The same bright sun shines to
ripen and perfect the fruits and flowers of
earth, but how much have wo benefited
and improved under its fructifying rays ?
Alas! look at our country now and twen
ty years ago, and tell me if we have not
.^mgraded rather than advanced in agri-
mltural improvement. This is in part
jwiog to the great change in our labor
lysteo, and in part to dependence
in foreign stimulating fertilizers. But I
phi not stop now to euquire into the
causes, but will, with the aid of my
brother farmers, endeavor to point out the
remedies. I lay no claim to infalibility ;
I mako no great pretensions to soience.
What I know about farming'’ has been
learned in the next best school to a col
lege— 0?i the farm itself. When I speak
of the farm, I do not mean only the cot
ton and corn field, but all the surround
mgs of the farmor’s life—the garden, the
orchard and tho flower yard.
I propose to rnnke the weekly issue of
this journal emphatically a Farmers'
Jocbnal, aod I ask my intelligent readers
to give mo their experiences in short, pithy
artiolos, that they may help me enlighten
others. L idies, talk about your gardens
and your flowers through these columns;
and sister Patrons, you can vote, will you
not write, too? The mighty movement
of the granges will be duly chronicled
here, and although I do not believe in the
necessity or wisdom of tho grange having
any accredited organ, I offer freely my
pen and columns for the dissemination of
snob f as may bo of interest to the
geuo. -ming public. The facility and
cheapu. will which field, fruit and
flower si.o J. ire disseminated through the
mails, dot.-. not seem to be generally
known in this section. I shall give such
information, from time to time, as will
enable my readers to profit by it. Broth
ers of the Plow and Loom and Anvil,
holpus make tho Agricultural Department
of the Enquirer interesting as well as in
structive; encourage the proprietor in his
laudable efforts to extend its usefulness,
and in sustaining him sustain yourselves,
and build up and iraprovo your common
country.
Preparation or Farm l.nml.
In this age of doubt, uncertainty and
humbug, there is no truth that has be
come more iudolibly stamped on the farm
er’s mind than that if iie has a good crop
of anything, tho land must be well pre
pared before the seed is put in, and yet
how many doceive themselves iu putting
in a larger crop flian they can cultivate,
hoping to cultivalo it in its growing state.
Farmers, do not deceive yonrselvos. lie-
mernbor that ono acre well and properly
tilled will yield ns much as three acres
half tilled. Now is the time to prepare
the farming land. If you have pitched
any ouo crop to a certain number of acres,
curtail it one-third, and give the two-
thirds deop and thorough ploughing. Sub
soil every inch of land you cultivate; it
not only increases the crop, but protects
the land from washing. Who over thinks
of planting a garden without first sub-
soiling deep with spade or plow?
The field crops need the same food and
the same facilities for obtaining it that
the vegetables do. Give tho farm the
same deep culturo as the garden, and you
shall have your reward iu increased pro-
duction. But to plough deep, you must
have the propor plow. Tho little turn-
shovel most in vogue among us is but a
scarifier, going just dpep enough for the
rains to wash all the soil it stirs away.
Get tho improved plows—Brinley’s, Ave
ry’s, Excelsior, and soma others—those
that will go from twelve to eighteeu
inches deep, and put two or four mules
on, and try to reach your 11 farm below."
Some of my readers may not have four
mules, or two. Club together, then, to
do tho deep ploughing, for remember that
when the land is once ploughed thor
oughly the crop planted ou it is half
made. Brother farmers, let our motto
be--less land in culture und better tillage.
Culture of the Onion.
This is one of tho garden crops that
should bo planted as soon now as possible,
although I have raised good onions from
seed put in the last part of March. The
onion is a great feeder, and to bulb well j
must have rich soil t v grow in. The best
special fertilizers that I have ever found
for the onion is a compost of hen manure,
leaf mould and wood ashes. The ground
haviug been previously manured with
stable miuuro. Spread this coi^post over
and spade it in. Now plant the sets, or
buttons, fifteen inches apart, in tho drill.
Bettor keeping onions cm bo raised from
the black seed, than from the button or
act. Onion scod are a long time in vege
tating, to test them pour boiling water
over the seed in a cup or saucer, turn it
off iu one minute, and if the seed are
good the germ will show itse’f iu two
minutes. Plant tho sued about four
iuchoa apart, in the drill, dropping two
seed in a pi.ice, and covering about one-
half of au inch. 1 will give their future
culture hereafter.

The Grange .Heeling
to-morrow, judging fioni the uote of pre
paration, will bo an event to note. The
very rapid spread of its lodges and influ
ence in all sections of the country, the
character aud prominence of its members
have led public confidence since the in
ception of the idea. Our opinions and
convictions of any measures of public
good arc made up largely by the support
given it by our representative men, and
if they err and lead us blindly iu tho
ditch, we have tho simple satisfaction of
being in good company oven in disaster.
If, however, the future shall disclose their
movomouts promotive of the general
good, wo shall find that we did well to
follow their lead. It is good, however,
for as to meet together, oonfer ono with
another, to hear words of advice and en
couragement from those whose peouliar
lino of thoughts aud praotico may have
direct or indirect connection with our call
ing, and it is nut unfroquently bo that our
best advisors are those whose business is
iu au entirely different channel, being freo
from bias or preconoeived, or a set of
ideas which haug about some of us like
“Sinbad’s” old man of the sea.
Colonels Chambers and Calhoun will,
we know, give- us food for thought and
motives for improvement. Let us all lay
aside business for tho while, aud attend
aud couutenanoe the gathering of the
sous of toil, from whom come at last
evevy eaitlily good and all buHiuess suc
cess.
Wo have been shown by a lady friend

ference. This is a little ahead of anythiug

were grown in the open air.
Messrs. Uurton Brothers, Chambers

for tho various magazines—illustrated and
otherwise—Harper's, Leslies, W'acerly,
Eclectic, und others. Tlioir shelves are
well filled with all new reading mailer.
