animation in mercantile operations than
wo are accustomed to see. However,
when we remember that the dock of cot
ton on hand is unusually large—about
une-third of our receipts—it ia not so
strange, after nil, that business life beats
ho feebly. Then, too, the time for farm
activity has come around Again, and many
of our country friends are busy in flowing
oata, mending fences, clearing and break
ing up land, Ac., Ac. Between these
things, and the strong probability that |
people either have no money, or are hold- :
ing on to see what developments the fu
ture may bring around, there is no deny- |
ing that our merchants are not doing a« ;
well oh they ought to do at this season of
the year. Still wo hoar little grumbling,
as our hnsinosR men are a philosophical
set, oud are generally disposed to look on
the bright sido of things. What affects
them most seriously is the failure to make
collection!), and we have no doubt some
of our heavy houses would be willing to
suspend from now till next fall if they
could got hold of the money justly duo
them.
Whilst the above represents the mer
cantile situation, it is gratifying to bo
able to state that our manufacturing in
terest n are flourishing—that is, they are
in far bettor condition than wo had any
right to hopo or expect they would bo at
the beginning of the. late panic. All our
mills aro running on full time, paying full
wages, ami the demand for their goods is
steadily improving. Such a condition of
things is truly cheering, and must of it
self loud to tuako money more plentiful
and improve other descriptions of busi
ness. Lot the people of this entire sec
lion encourage our factories in every pos
sible way, for by thus doing capital wiil
bo kept among ns, tho groat resources of
our country be developed, and our impor
tant industries bo fostered and oncour
aged.

Money is scarce, yet it cannot bo de
nied there is still a great deal of hard
ensh hid away in tho houses of mechanics
and farmers. The fact became evident
in our city when, some time ago, Captain
T. E. Blanchard announced to the people
that ho lmd determined to sell his unri
valed stock of dry goods at cost for cash.
At once his storo becumo crowded by
those desiring to take advantage of his
oiler, nil of whom becumo convinced of
the truth of his public statement. Cap
tain Blanchard has wisely determined to
coutinno the sale of his goods, believing
it will bo to tho advantage of himsolf and
customers to continue selling at his for
mer low rates. Wo can gommend this
sterling establishment and its energetic
head and courteous attendants to all who

In live crops out of the lust six the
amounts delivered at tho ports to March
17th, nverngo 72 0/i-100 por cent, of tho
total crop as made up at tho end of tho
your, and including tho overland arrivals
and Southern consumption. Tho greatest
variation for tho five years from that aver
age is loss than one por cent. If tho ro-
e« ipts equal 1870 1 wo will have on March
17th 3,312,081, or 73 por cent, of a crop
of 3,337,100 bales. If they equal 1872-3,
tho total to March 17 will be 3,085,427*,
or 73 por oout. of a crop of 4,22(1,000
hales. Of the six crops, that of 1871-2 is
an oxceptiou, tho receipts showing on
March 17th 79 per cent, of the crop, tho
crop will bo 4,192,500. If they equal
1872-3 we will have a crop of 3,905,000.
So taking the past six years as ft test, the
crop will range somewhere betwoon 8,-

ference.

received and heartily endorsed by almost
every intelligent planter in this section,
and that 1 may be compensated in a meas
ure) somewhat commensurate with the
acknowledged merits of the production
and value of the information convoyed,
I do from this date establish the price at
50 cents per copy. In consideration of
this change, I do hereby agree t
fund the money to any farmer who, after
reading the production, will certify to mo
ho is not fully satisfied with the invest
ment. There is no slavery so hopeless
as that which compels a man to support a
family by tho cultivation of poor Jamb
The problem to bo solved by tho South

problem. I defy the agricultural or sci-
