Tbo mechanics of Opelika met on
Wednesday night last, at the court house,
to ol'gauize o sooiety for mutual protec
tion ami social intercourse. We hope the
organization will prove beneficial and
productive of much good among that claBS
of our fellow-citizens. Its objeots were
not of a party character, although a po
litical meeting resulted from the assembly
of theso sturdy sons of toil. The most
notable feature connected with the organ
ization was the large proportion of young
men who came forward at the call of the
chairman nnd enrolled their names. We
would respectfully suggest to the older
heads who usually give tone and strength
to incipient organizations of this charac
ter, that the young upon their roll must
needs give permanency to it, and every
intluence which older heads can devise,
consistent with good morals, should be
cheerfully allowed, and so charm and
control the attendance of those who are
going to givo oharactor and power to op-
orations in the future. As a rule, the ed
ucation of our young men who choose
mechanioal pursuits, ia defective, es
pecially in those book acquirements
which, under tnoro fortuitous circum
stances, make thorn the peers of the
proudest of the land. Much may bo
done, however, in this direotion, if prop
er books and othor facilities are afforded
tho youthful members of the sooiety
who have four to five hours at night
leisure for reading and investigation of
such subjects as come before them in
their daily occupations, and fo put tho
thoories taught them in books to actual
tost. Precept and example, coming so
directly in contaot must necessarily
siren.;'bon the mind and aid the hand in
dovolu| big marvels in mechanical beauty,
aud cuulci ring upon its builder character
aud success which ruroly attends those
loft to their own resources. We would
bo glad to know that this Association,
now numbering sixty or seventy mechan
ics, had organized a library, secured
rooms, and woro vigorously pushiog
ahead this very commendable Associa
tion.
Another Vlcetlng.
Directly upon the adjournment of the
Mechanics' Association, the citizens pres
ent—and among them we recognized very
umuy of our leading men—resolved them
selves into a public mooting, calling Capt.
W. S. Tumor to the chair aud K. M. Gray
io the clerk’s post.
Tho chairman explained the object of
| the moating to be to nominate a Demo-
orntic.Conservative ticket for Mayor aud
|AMormen.
Upon motion, it was resolved that no
nomination bo made of candidates ; but
that each one present be permitted to
vote for whomsoever he would, and upou
cnuutiug the votes cast, the two highest
he voted for until one should roceive the
highest vote.
This being agreed to, the meeting pro
ceeded to ballot, and Colonel W. J. Sam-
ford having received a majority of the
votes cast, wus, upou motion, declared
the unanimous choice of the meeting.
Upon motion, the meeting then nomi
nated by acclamation the following ticket
for Aldermen: T. L. Frazer, J. M. Mc-
Nsiuee, R. J. Trammell, B. H. Willis, P.
J. Wilkorson, C. A. Cannon.
We have never seen a larger meeting of
tho people of Opelika, or more unanimity
at ono. They have presented to their
follow-citizens u capital ticket, and if we
du our duty it will bo elected.
Fire.
After tbo adjournment of the public
meeting on Wednesday night, at about 11
o'clock, we wore scared out of our usual
happy dreams by tho cry of “Fire!"
lieiug too old to ruu with the “mersheeu,”
wo wout to sleep and let the boys and
bells have their say. Some lively bouI had
tired the building used for testing the
Extioguishor. The machine and those
who run with it were promptly on tbo
ground, and made it bad for tho fire in
about two seconds.

ers is loss than any first-class clerk re
