The Appropriation to the Columbus In
dustrial Association.
la view of the fact that we have had
throo Fairs, which have wonderfully illus
trated the importance of Columbus and
addod greatly to her reputation and busi
ness ; that a flairs have been managed
bolter than any similar corporation in
Georgiu; that the Directors have not
only mude no money, but reully given it
well us their time; that they are
among our most ostoemod citizens and
largest tax payors; that the city has never
cent, while all others in the
South have contributed thousands, we
indeed surprised that the City
Council dhl not, two weeks ago, give the
Fair Association the $3,500 appropriation
asked for tho Fair next fall, without
reference. As it is, wo trust the commit
tee will report favorably, and secure the
grandest exhibition this fall ever seen in
Goorgiu. Macon, Augusta, Bavuunuh
and Atlanta huve given their Fuirs from
$30,000 to $30,000 ; Eufaula gave $10,-
000. Columbus should not hesitate about
giving $3,500, uftor tho Association has
dono so much without any outside aid
aud bus proved such a benefit and honor
to our city. This should be a matter of
city pride. Every class is interested. It
brings visitors, trade and money, and is
a great social institution which cannot be
ovor-Gstiinuted. Every citizen should bo
proud of our Fairs. They compare
favorably with any we saw during a pro
tracted tour West, aud in some respects
wore superior. We trust Council will be
animated by sufllciont city pndo to grant
the meagre appropriation, and not allow
the Directors to bear the eutiro harden.
Sudden Heath of Mrs. It. S. Porter.
This estimable lady, tho wife of Mr. D.
8. Porter, tho well known foreman of tho
Sun job aflice, died suddenly, yesterday
nfternoou, of heart disease. 8ho had beou
visiting not an hour hoforo, and shortly
after returning home received tbo futal
attack. »She was born in Bridgeport,
Conn., and lmd roached tho age of iifty-
nine. Her umiden name was Miss E. L.
Rossiter. Bho was among tho earliest
sottlors of Columbtin, and ouo of tho fow
who took refuge iu tho Oglothorpe House
when it was rumored tho Indians wore ad
vancing ou tho villogo. Bho has seen Co
lumbus grow from a few shanties to tho
proportions of a city, and hor own life has
been ouo of usefulness. Being an urdont
Episcopalian and desirous of doing good,
she was mainly instrumental in establish
ing the parish school for poor children,
which is the pride of tho Columbus
church. Tho highest praiso that can be
givou any woman belongs to- her, aud
that is, “Sho mude home happy." Twice

Increase of 4Vi,772 bales.
Tub Cotton Situation.—Including over
land, If as much cotton Is reoelvo i tho present
season from this date as there was last year, the
crop of 1873-4 will amount, In round numbers,
to 4.260,000 bales. The‘probabilities Indicate
more rath-r than less. Four and a halt mil
lions aro tho outside limits ot estimates.
If Columbus gets as much to Sept. 1st from
this week us sho did last year, hor receipts will
toot up nearly 61,000 bales. Last year during
tho remainder ol the season, wo receive i nearly
7.000 bales. More cotton Is reported In the
country than thon. and river men say there arc
8.000 to 3,006 more oalea to come here from that
direction. Our manulactorlcs aro drawing
cotton from a quarter hitherto unknown to our
market. Thus eighty bales wero warehoused
yesterday which came from Dawson,
Randolph county, on the Southwestern Kal •
road. Our cotton milts will havo takm some
9.000 bales at tho expiration of the year,
Tbo receipts do not Indicate any ground for
an advance of price, and none lor a decline,
for tho world will take four and a half million
bales of American cotton at the present prices.
The sales have been heavy this week, tho
largest account being that or Northern Spin
ners. Fully one-half of our large stock is fully
advanoed upon. It has largely been decreased
by shipments this week.
Tho gonernl representation Is that farmers
have planted moro small grain than slnco the
