Atlanta, Feb. 24, 1874.
The Bedell-Cbisoltn case continues to
exoito and interest Atlanta as well as Co
lumbus. To-morrow the case will be most
probably ended, nud then the sensatiuu
will die away until the trial before the
Superior Court.
Tho case was continued. The court
room was crowded. For the first time
the prisoner showod some uueasinoss.
A. J. Woods testified he was in a bar
room, forty foot off, and heard but ouo
report of u pistol, which seemed loud and
clear; ran out of saloon and saw a man
runuiug up tho street, who said “don’t
shool;" saw John and Gaines Chisolm;
heard John say to Guinea, “don't shoot
him;" Guinea said, “I will shoot the
damned ," but didn’t shoot; both tho
Chisolm's wero nrmed; heard the inun on
the ground cry out “murder, the damned
have murdered mo;” the policeman
could not have heard the remark alluded
to, for ho vvus too badly frightened; heard
Gaines Chisholm say “1’iu tho man that
done the shooting;" ho nud John Chisolm
i thou standiug together, und both
had pistols.
Edward McLaughlin, whose trade is
railroading and telegraphing, testified he
was Btuuding at the Kimball House
uer with the negro Jordan; ho sa'
feudant fire; saw pistol flish; suw police
man run; running was no name for it; he
wont like the very devil; nfter ho shot
wituess went down and he..rd Chisol
say, “Bedell triod to kill me, and I hud to
kill him;" thought at first defendant was
firing at policeman: never saw a man run
so in his life.
McLaughlin was brought into Court
under attachment. He told the officer
with the summons that his name was
Smith, but bis brogue did not answer for
Smith. He said to didn't want to have
anything to do with tho case. Some of
his evidence excited much laughter.
Iloro tho prosecution closed.
The defense introduced only throe wit
nesses, who gavo tho following points:
It. A. Bene ms—Heard defendant say
ho had killed Bedell, but be hud to do it*;
was first to reach Bedell after being shot,
and hoard no expression as “Tho d- d
rascals have killed me;" saw a cocked pis
tol on thu ground just before Bedell; wit
ness carried it to Brnzletou, who was
looking for it.
Braztotou (reintroduced) swore that Bo-
dell did not cock tbe pistol when iu his
possession; nor did ho think it was
cocked wlum Bedell handod it to him; wit
ness did not cock it; Bedell fell right in
his tracks.
Samuel Clark swore ho suw Gaines and
Joliu Chisolm in tho Muison do Yille fif
teen minutes before the shooting; Gaines
came iu bloody, and desired to wash his
faco : John was there before; heard de
fendant say he was going right home with
his brother; defendant lives on Collins
street, and would pass the Maisou do
Yille in'going home.
Samuel Ware, colored, is employed at
tho Maisou do Yille; defendant came
there to wash his face, which wns covered
with blood; John Chisolm was also iu tho
room; defendant said he was going home,
and John said: “I will go with
Gaines, and see you home;" a few
incuts after hoard report of pistol, when
ho ran down and met defendant ou steps;
defendant said: “I have killed Peu Be
dell to keep Liui from killing me"; has
not soon Guinea with n pistol iu a year.
Tho defendant then, slowly and with
soiuo emotion, said iu substance :

stood from some party or parties that
Penn hud gotten some money. Ho had
been owing me throe hundred dollars
nearly a year, borrowed money ; thought
I would go round nud see him ; met him
ut tho Turf Excbauge. I took him aside
and asked him for tho money. Ho be
came offended, clirsod and kuoaked me
down again and again. I got ou my knees
and askod him to desist. I got
soon as I could, and went to tho guard
house. I returned to my room, und de
termined to go home ; on tho way acci
dentally mot Bedell and another person ;
hoard him use some expression ; saw Bo-
dell make some motion us if to shoot; I
fired ; T had it to do; thought ho was go
ing to shoot mo ; I did not want to have
any difficulty; I was going homo to lie
down.
Court then adjourned. Tho argument
will be heard to-morrow. Must

—The military companies of Savannah
celebrated the 23d (Sunday being the 22d)
with much spirit, and made a fine display.
—New machinery for the Arkwright
cotton factory at Savannah iR being put in
place, by which its operations will bo in
creased. This is a reliable indication of
prosperity.
—Tho Savannah News thinks that the
rice crop is about all in from the various
points, with the exception of Butler's Isl
and, where the harvest was late.
—Several patriotic ladios ut Milledgo-
ville celebrated tho 22d in a way that add
ed to the happiness of their lords. The
children nro all boys, and will replenish
tho stock of Georgo Washingtons in the
conntry.

—Chancellor McCraw announces that
ho w ill hold u special term of his Conrt at
Eufoula, commencing on tho 23rd of
March.
—The voto for Mayor iu Eufaula was—
Bray, Bom., 4<J4 ; Powers, Rep., 288.
Democratic Aldormeu wero elected in eve
ry word.
—A direct railroad to Tullahoina, Ten
nessee, is a new project which tho people
of Elmore county are now agitating. But
railroads at tho South are more easily
talked about tlmn built just now.
—A destructive fire on Water street,
between Dauphin and Conti, in Mobile,
burnt tbo stores of Mr. John Homes und
Air. J. H. O'Hara, with all their contents,
on Monday. The loss was about $30,000,
partly covered by insurunce.
—The Shelby (Ala.) (J idc reports that
n funner in that couuty, who hua triod the
remedy, says salt water will destroy the
cabbage worm and tbo striped cabbage
bug. If so, try it on the cotton caterpil
lar.
—Judge Abrahams informs tho Living
ston Journal that to date there have
not been ouo fourth as many mortgages
recorded in the Probate oifico of Sumter,
there were to tho corresponding date
of last year.
—Tho Montgomery News learns from a
passenger that tbo Fair buildings at Eu-
faula were entirely burned ou Monday
night, and it is supposed by tho negroes,
in revengo for their discomfiture ut tho
pollR on that day. Wo hope that the re
port is incorrect.
—Tho Eufnnln News' account of tho
election melee in its city sustains tho re
ports telegraphed to tho Montgomery
Advertiser und News (uoticed by us yes
terday). Tho News says that the wounds
of Bill Flag, the negro who commenced
the tight, are very serious, but not neces
sarily mortal. Tho wounds of all tho

Washington, February 23.—Iu the
morning the Senato proceeded to tho con
sideration of the bill to appoint a com
mission to impure into tho alcoholic
liquor traffic.
To-day tho Senato continued the finan
cial debate. Messrs. Merrimon, Shor-
Allison and Morton taking part.
There was a sharp discussion botweon
Morton and Sohurz, growing out of tho
debate of yesterday, in which Morton said
Schurz did not understand the country in
whioh he lived.
In reply to Morton to-day, Sohurz said
Morton mado misstatements atrocious and
wilful. Morton retorted by characteriz
ing tho argument of Schurz as disingen
uous. Carpentor called both to ordor,
and apologies followed. No votes.
Boyle was confirmed as attorney gen
eral for the oastorn district of Texas.
House.
Platt, of Virginia, from tho Naval Com
mittee, mado a report on the bill to estab.
lish a navy yard nt Port Poyal, S. C.
Laid on the table.
Tho bill to authorize tho removal of
tbo powder magazine ut Norfolk, Vn.,
passed.
Washington, Feb. 25.—Tho debate on
the bill reviving tho franking privilege
was continued all day, and finally the
previous question was seconded and the
mttiu question ordered by 12 to 117.
Tbe bill will be voted on to-morrow.

The President to-day iu communicating
to Congross the roport of tbo Centennial
Commission, says: “A failure iu this en
terprise would bo deplorable. Success
can bo assured by assuring tho public
opinion to] tho| importance of tbe occa
sion." To secure this end, in his judg
ment, Congressional legislation is neces
sary to make tbe exposition both nation
al und international.

The preliminary examination of Gaines
Chisolm was concluded this afternoon.
Chisolm was committed for murder, with
out bail. 1 ho decision is unanimously
approved.
Tho prisoner received tho judgment of
tho Court with sodio emotion. Ho has
been safely confined in jail. Tho trial
will take place ut tho next term of tho
Superior Court in Atlanta. All tho prob
abilities are iu favor of his conviction by
that tribunal.
Nothing has boon heard of John Chis
olm.
Tho conduct of tho policemen is
strongly condemned. I ho people nro
j greatly inconsed ut their conduct. Two

chusetts Supremo Judicial Court hus do-
dided affirmatively tho following question
referred to it by an ordor of the Legisla
ture : “Under tbo Constitution ot this
Commonwealth, can u woman bo a mem
ber of a school committee?'’ Tho Court
bolds that tho Constitution contains noth
ing relating to school committee 1 *, and
that the common law of England was our
law upon the subjoot, permitting a woman
to fill any locnl office of an administrative
character, tho duties attached to which
were such that a woman was competent to
perform them.

those parties is of the most overwhelming

Detroit, Fob. 24.—It is now probable
that all the fishermen on tho floating ice,

A Deadly Encounter.
San Francisco, Fob. 22.—A terrible
tragedy occurred last night, nt Watson
ville, Santa Cruz county, resulting in tbo
instant death of M. J. Gilkcy and Dr. C.
E. Cleveland. There had boon an old
feud betwnen the men, and last night^Dr.
Clovoland startod our, avowing bis pur
pose to kill Gilkey. The men mot, drew
pistols, approached to witbiu two feet of
each other, aud fired simultaneously.
Dr. Cleveland fired twice, and fell dead
ou his face. Gilkey retreated a few
steps, leaned ngairst a true, nud thou fell
dead. Both men had been drinkiug hard
during tho day.

edition of the Medical Times states tho
autopRv of the Siamese Twins was contin
ued on Friday last, resulting in some in
teresting disooverios. It says ou Friday
the Commission continued the autopsy
upon the Siamoso Twins and made some
important discoveries. They foaud that
the two livers, which wore supposed to bo
joiuod only by blood vessels, wero really
only one body, tho parnchimatos tissue
bomg continuous between thorn, so that
when they were romoved from the bodies
