I-nwIoHaiicsa.
We had but a day or so Biuco noticed
tho remarkable quietude of the city, but
Ibo peaco aud good order characterizing
it has tyeen shamefully broken, and the
live-* of her peaceablo citizens endanger
ed by the devil which whisky aud its
concomitants brings about; not ouly
liavo the lives of citizens boon at tho
hazard of a stray Phot, but the officers of
the law threatened with death if as the
paid guardians of the peaco they in dis
charge of sworn duty, attempted
to arrest tho persons who, under
the influence of drunkenness,
rendered last Sabbath eveuing memorable
to those who witnessed tho disgraceful
scones, enacted on our principal thor
oughfares. Character and cleverness
does go, and should, a great way to mol
lify our just indignation at such occur
rences. Rut when they periodically oc
cur, aud the friends of the violators of
law cannot put them away until tho
demon of intemperance loosens his grasp
on uiiud aud body, it is manifestly tho
duty of our polico to discharge that duty,
however daugorous or disagreeablo to
them, and it should iuuko no difference if
in tho ono case the violator of good order
should wear the habiliments of a gentle
man, or till an office of honor and dignity.
Already much of tho opposition to the
Democratic party grows out of the chargo
umdo that no one but negroes or poor
white folks are placed in arrrost, or
brought beforo our Mayor’s Court. Let
justice be done though tho Heavens fall.
The Extlniriilsher IMutliiffuInlieri.
A fiie occurred on Monduy night in tho
two-bt >ry brick building uwDcd by Mrs.
Park, «•;. I’.tllapoosa street, and bad en-
velopoil ill • rear of the buildiug iu ilirnos
and entered the muia buildiug. A few
moments more and the onliro property,
valued at $4,001), would have beeu u total
los9, as it was uninsured, to a lady who
would have felt the loss most keenly.
The new machine, howovor, was on hand
and, gallantly manned, put tho flames out
in a few seconds. The machine cost $2,-
000 dollars. Tho property saved is worth
$4,000. Will tho grumblers place $2,000
to tho credit column?
Rnmlial Brooks.
We loam since our roturu that the
chargo against Marshal Brooks was dis
missed. Our city ordinances are so frurned
that offenders, when urrtstcd, can give
bail on the spot lor app*earunco before tho
Mayor. If the Marshal shall consider tho
p. utilise of an offender to cease his folly
and appear at a given time sufficient, the
law permits it. Wo believe the Mayor
has authority, howevor, to override tho
Marshal aud instruct tho incarceration of
any citizen fouud violating tho ordinances,
and if tho Marshal or Police refuse to do
so, they certainly c&nuot be in tho dis-
b charge of duly aud should bo discharged.
Brevities!.
I —When wo go away again, wo intend
1 notifying Chief of Extiuguishor, so that
things may be iu running order.
