At tho day draws nigh when tho anuuol election for Mayor and Aldermen of thin P ity oocnrH, it mny not bo amiss for us to tban udverliso our people of it, and say a l„«r words on thii highly important mut ter. Our older citizens look buck with reyrot upon tho unpleasant and danger ous scenes which occurred and followed tbe election in 1872, and doprocato any h iuiil<*r occurrence. In common with them we, who are strangers to those un pleasant times, can but regret that men found themselves urruyed in hostile atti tude to thoso with whom social and busi- ness iutoruourso brought thorn iu daily contact. Such scenes are common, wo are sorry to add, iu ell towns built in a day, so to speak. They lack that homo- grtuious qua'ity ebarautorizing citios of slower growth, where tho lapse of yoatH has pruned and shaped ufT.iits in trim and tram for tho car of progress. The eurly settler and habitue of a cros3 road villago finds himself suddenly awakened and sur rounded by a restless, nctivo mass of hu manity, each possibly having an bxo to grind ou the public stuno, will necessarily cross swords with tho settled eonvictions nud wishes of tho old and new people, and very naturally divisions, hard feeling, aud not uufroquoully hard blows follow. Tho result is cliques, nud parties are formed, and in some cases override, by superior tact and wire pulling, tbe will of the majority. Having now arrived at n point iu the his'.oiy of Opelika from which wo can safely louk forward to continued progress iu populutiou, wealth, uml general confi dence in our future prosperity, we can look back oultnly at our early struggles, our partisanship'*, our collisions of opin ion, >■ 11 laying aside oar swindling clothe-, don the attire of manhood— youthful, ' h true, but not the Iofs rolia- ! blo hml vig •■»us—aud inter heartily into evury interest which concorns us to-day. | Go to tho polls in March, with the best ! men in tho city ou your tickets, and vote i for him or them, without regard to past!
