Washington, March 3.—The House
was engaged on the bill to amend the
Homestead laws.
Tho IIouso took up tho bill to socuro
homesteads to uctnal settlers ou the pub
lic domain. Tho bill was amended by
ad ling a proviso—That no oath should be
required of nuy one desiring to socuro a
liomobtend, except tho oath to support the
Constitution of the United Statos.
This was mainly for tho benefit
of the people in tho Southern
States, who, uudor tho existing laws,
requiring tho taking of tho iron clad oath,
cannot avail themselves of tho benefit of
tho pro-euiption laws bill; also repeals
(ho pre-emption laws. It was further
amended by a proviso, that all lands
granted to railroads, shall bo subjeot to
tho provisions of tho bill in oil cases
where such roads have failed to comply
with the conditions of tho grants. Tho
bill was thou pnssod as nmondod.
