Shuevkuoiit rocoivod 11,421 balon of
cotton for tho woek ending Wodnenday
last.
I'inoiihaok is marshaling his forcoa for
n new election in Loniaiann, nnd is suit!
to exproHB the opinion that it *ill bo or
dered tbi« year, though perhapn not until
November. He ftndn strong opposition
in bis own party.
Ah a fishing party wuro enjoyiug them
selves on the Trinity river in Texas, one
day lust woek, a young man nnrnod W. A.
(loorgn undertook to frighten them by
imitating a panther. Cupt. ltawlings, of
tho party, hearing the noise And Hoeing
a movement, fired, and shot George very
Horiounly, if not fatally. He is a pant or
for that kind of Hport no moro.
Thb tax sales of Oalhouu county—ono
of the largust and inrmt important coun
ties of North Alabama, and which rames
but little cotton—fill Iohh than ono column
of tho Jacksonville Jiejttiblican, whilo the
advertisement of Rales of tiro tux collec
tor of Montgomery—oue of tho hoavicHt
cotton producing counties—occupies more
than eleven long and closely filled columns
of tho Weekly ltejmblican. “Compari
sons uro odious," but they are sometimes
mighty suggostivo, and this is a enso in
point.
Eight vessels, carrying 17,821) bulos of
cotton, valued at #1,227,0D2, cleared at
Savannah for European ports on Satur
day. The Advertiser inclines to the
opinion that this excuedH any shipment,
on record from Savannah. Tho direct
exportation of cotton from Hint city must
Hurely bo increasing rapidly. Cotton
mon in the intorior can tiguro it out to a
demonstration that it does not “pay" to
ship cotton direct from tho South to Eu
rope, but evidently some people aro not
yot convinced, and aro “showing thoir
faith by their works."
Mas. Wash, the only remaining liquor
seller in Greenville, Tulin., still held out
on Thursday evening lust. Sho had then
boon besieged for three weeks. .It is
stated that she daily carries on a liouvy
wordy war with the Indies around her,
and is never at a loss for u tart and effect
ive retort. Her license expires on tho
-d of April, and it is thought that at that
time, if not beforo, she can bo iuducod to
give up tho business. Hut in the mean
time another liquor saloon has been
opened in the place, so that tbo ladies
have a promise of as mu oh work as they
will wnut.
A ooitiiBgroNDBNT of tho Augustn
Chronicle reports tho sale of tho magnifi
cent landed and largo personal property
of Messrs. Hughes »t Vickers, of Lee
county, whoso failure for $11)0,000 was
lately announced. Thoir plantation of
ovor throo thousand acres of fiuo cotton
lands, which cost them $40,000, with all
its improvements, was sold for $0,500;
tho stork and farming implements, which
coat them $15,000, brought only $4,500.
They had boon making all, or nearly all,
cotton,and had negloutod provision crops.
They gave this system a fuir trial on n
very extousivo scale, for years, a ad tho
rosult is reported above.
We have receivedn number of tho new
est pnpor of Montgomery, Ala., nnd tako
back tho doubt, which wo expressed the
other day, whether it could bo more Radi
cal than tho Journal, it is called tho
Weekly Republican, and Mr. ltobt. H.
Knox is the editor. It “files" tho name
of Adam O. Folder for Govern-r, Rich
ard Husteed for Congressman at Largo,
and James T. ltupior for Representative
of the 2d Congressional District. We
sea that tho /{('publican pitches into Con
gressman White, ono of the Republican
Representatives from Alahumn, with a
vim, and it is especially against him that
it pits Hussed.
Tiik colored Congressman Elliott, of
South Carolina, left Washington about a
week ago to make u spoeeh at Columbia,
iu which ho pretty plainly intimated to
his political associates that tho Republi
eau party could not aud would not much
longer carry tho load of such a Stato
government ns exists in South Carolina.
Ho declared that tho Tax-Payers' Conven
tion is not simply a movement of men
out of office against those who control
tho Slate. It is a movement rendered
necessary by tho maladministration of
affairs, and hits tho co-operation of hon
est and prudent men of all parties. It is
his opiuiou that “the National Republi-
onn party to-day is ready to cut aloof
upon tho slightest provocation from the
corruption now existing in tho South,
and unless you do something, and that
speedily, they will be compelled to cut
off tho rotten branches."
ALABAMA l'l'Nimu LAW.
Tho Montgomery papers of yesterday
publish tho decision of tho Supreme
Court of Alabama on tho case involving
tho constitutionality of the Funding act
of tho lute Legislature, it affirmed the
docistou of the Court below, grautmg a
mandamus to tho Superintendent of Pub
lie lnstruutiou to compel tho Auditor to
draw his warrant for Macon county’s
proportionate share of the school money.
Wo copy tho material head-notes of tho
docisiou:
The statute of April P.Uh, 1873, requir
ing a certain poitiou of the public moneys
to be kept in each county, is uot iu con-
tliet with the provisions of tho latter
statute of December P.Uh, 1873, for the
funding of the domestic debt of the
Stste.
Tho'statute of April lUth, 1673, does not
coutliot with 3d section of the 4tb article
of the State Constitution. That section
is conservative, not restrictive of the
power of General Assembly over the pub
lie money. It. F. Safiold J. dissenting.

As wo have said, this departure from \\j-ill ATTEND^ PROMPTLY TO THESALK, |

that tho Auditor must either refuse to
draw his warrant under certain sectiouH
uf tho Funding act, or an extra session of
tho Legislature to make provision for
meeting tho expenses of tbo State Gov
ernment is nocessary.
Tho Advertiser says: “By tho decision
just tntnlo, several hundred thousand dol
lars aro prevented from coming into tho
Stato Treasury, and loft wi<\ tho County
Treasurers to bo expended for schools.
The amount thus placed asido for schools,
and tho $100,000 required to bo kept in
tbo Treasury by tho Funding bill, to pay
interest on tho obligations provided by
that act, will most effectually stop tbo
wheels of the Stato Treasury."

Afuj. A. Ji. Calhoun: «
Dkau Sib—Will you obligo tho ladies of
this city by giving them information, if
the following statements aro neurly cor
rect, and if not correct, please correct
them us near as you can, viz: 00,000
halos cotton (uvorngo) Hold for tho your,
at $05 per bale—$3,000,000. Of this
amount docs not, say $1,000,000 go West
and East, from wholesale liquor and
tobacco dealers, for liquor nml lobanco
alone? Docs tho salo of all goods in this
city for ladies' and gouts' wear, clothing
proper, oxooed $700,000, or $300,000 less
than the above? How much moro does
tho corn aud bacon Hold to support tho
plantations cost than tbo whiskey nnd
tobacco? Would uot economy in Iheso
two articles—say total abstinouce—make
tho country rich in a few years, by put
ting that amount in factories, nnd not
make the ladies economize all ?
And, finally, aro not tho firms of thoso
wholesale housos dealing in theso two
arlicloH composed entirely, or in part, of
influential members of the several Chris
tian churches of this city? Is tbero a
single exception to this? If so, how
many? Many of us think this a great
evil, uml that tho ladies, if they do any
thing, should begin in the churches, nnd
not on tho sidewalks.
Very respectfully,
Many Lady Rkadedm.
Tho ubovo letter came to hand yester-
d«y, and sot us to thinking. Wo aro, of
course, ignorant as to the amount paid
for liquor in Columbus, and wo are equal
ly at u loss to Hay how many of our gro
cery merchants arc moiubers of church.
Wo only know that thoso who are not
huvo no scruples as to their calling, which
is foil to l:o honorable iu overy commu
nity. As to tho facts given by the “la
dies," wo cannot doubt them, for it has
been a part of our worldly arced to be
lieve, with tho blind faith of a Knight,
everything a lady says. Wo hope, how-
over, they aro mistakon in thoir monotary
facts, for love the sex as wo may, and ns
wo do ardently, wo have never succeeded
in working ourselves into tho belief that
they have a natural proclivity for
the scionco of numbers. Tho impression
has somehow gone abroad that wo advo
cate economy on the part of the ladies,
without urging its importance on tho
men, that wo are willing to see an excess
of drinking and smoking, if tho liulies
will only abjure fashions and frippery.
Just here, wo vow with all tho earnest*
ness of our nature, wo would rather bull
ish overy drop of intoxicating liquor
fiom tho land, aud burn up evory ounce
of tobacco, than to deprive the dear eroa-
uros of those loss costly articles of adorn
ment, that make tho woarers things of
beauty and joys forover. If wo thought
our wife would not sou this paper, uml
thus subject us in our old ugo to linguis
tic castigation, wo would empty our
hearts for it couple of hours, aud evory
sontimout would bo an expression of ad
miration as tin bounded ns space.
Seriously, wo do udvocuto economy
on tho part of men, ami wo do be
hove that too many of tho domostio sac
rifices are now made l>y uncomplaining
woman. If wo but followed thoir exam
ple and advice, there would bo fowor
drunk
fewer outly gravos and loss ungodliuoss.
Tbero would be more domestic peace,
purity and comfort, and it higher standard
of honor, and a stridor conformity to law
and right. There is too much intemper
ance nnd too little thrift; and if through
any iniluouco thoso e.ttt bo lessoned, it
will bo for tho happiness of tho women
and the benefit if tho men. As it is wo
s.iy in all candor our sex is too coarse,

retrogression in tho inarch of civilization !
—was defended solely on tho ground of
economy. It was eft'ectod, in order to save
an expense of $50,000, by a Legislature
which could easily have saved tbo Stato a
larger sum by reducing tbo cost of its
own machinery. We havo nlreudy shown,
by duta obtained from the Comptrollers’
reports of tho two States, that the cost of
tho session of the Georgia Legislature of
1872 3 wus $07,280, while that of tlio
Alabama Legislature for tho samo session
was $15(5,022. The Legislature of Geor
gia consists of 211) members; thnt«of Ala
bama of only 183. Tho avorago per diem
of members of tho Georgia Legislature
for the wholo session was $21)1 ; that of
inombers of the Alubama Legislature was
$1)04 each ! Tbe Souatu of Alabama, con
sisting of 33 members, had 41 attending
“officers," and tho House of 100 mem
bers had 77 “officers." The Georgia Leg
islature had not one-fourth us many. Tbo
Alabama Legislature paid four “firemen"
$1 ,222 for tho Hossion, nnd dozens of
sorgeauts-at-arms, pages, doorkeepers and
assistants iu like proportion. It is plain
that most of this money wuh squandered
on parly favoritos, aud tho State, which
cannot afford to put thieves and rowdies
iu jail becauso of tho expanse, lavished
her money on drones who had nothing to
do but to pocket tho cash extortod by
taxaliou from the people.
It is a d«ty which the pooplo of Ala
bama own to themselves and to the cause
of civilization and good government, to
bnnish from power the set who huvo com
mitted thoso outrages. There never can
bo prosperity and security for life uml
property in that Stato until criminals nre
puuishod us they should bo, nnd such ex
travagant squandering of the public tnou-
oy ns that to which wo havo alluded is
stopped. The general election of this
year must decide the fate of Alabama, for
it is evident that unless a groat ebungo is
soon offootod bor finances will bo irretriev
ably embarrassed, crime will run riot in
its immunity and licooso, and tho bettor
class of citizous will bo compelled to seek
elsewhere tho security and prosperity
which, they cannot find in a Statu almost
peorless in tho advantages and bounties
which Nature lias bestowed upon her.
