There are now live prisoners in jail. This
justifies a special session of tho County

A dwindling Booh Agent — Doth Forger
and Thief.
One came to Columbus tho othor day,
arid gave his name II. M. Wakeman, and
claimed to represent a house styled
“Wioting «fc Dayton, manufacturers of
Kastman u Calisthenic Master, and impor
ters of Fronch and German labels and
chromos, No. 288 Broadway, New York,”
aud No. 17a Race street, Cincinnati. He
went to one of our book storos, and after
exhibiting his samples, Ac., and convers
ing several hours, displayed a draft for
§100 drawn by bis houso aud certified
to by the cashier of tho Merchants'
National Bank of Cinoinnatti. He asked
the proprietors of the store to identify
him at the hank, which was done, and he
seemed the money. The draft has been
since returned, stating there is no Mich
house iu Cincinnati; so the Columbus
man who introduced the man has to sus*
tain a loss of §100. Wakomau, so called,
is then proved both forger and thief.
Ho should be passed around, thut others
may not bo deceived by him. IIo will,
without doubt, go for the druggists and
book dealers in other cities. Ho is a
small man, with light hair, and sores over
(lie lower purt of his face. Ho speaks
very fluently, and iH up to all the drum-
mg dodges.
Bather Sensational—Burglars <>* the
City—Your Money or Your Life!
A si ranger, name unknown, but roport-
iug from Atlautu, reports Tuesday night
lie was walking up Oglethorpe street. Ho
was thinking no ill, nor dreaming of any,
as his pockets wore empty of anything
resembling specie or greenbacks. The
moon lit up the town with snrpnBsing
beauty. Whilo thus atteodod by all these
things, Ac., tho Atluutn man reports, when
ho cuiuo to Burriuger's burned comer, he
was accosted by two men. Ono very
quietly shoved a navy revolver in his
face, and the other raised a bludgeon.
Money was demanded. They said noth
ing about his life. Instead of handing over
funds, which he hud not, Atlanta yelled
“inurdor! M That cry nlunuod the whole
neighborhood. The fierce sido-walk-way-
tnen (thut will do as well as highwaymon,
and it is more to our purpose) slopped
arouud tho corner to hoc another man,
and tho other iiiun kept on yol-
lmg. Filially ho was soi/.ed
with the running fovor, fear lent him
wings, and he wnut at a rate which rival
ed the celebrated time made by policoumn
Bru/.cltuu, when pursued by Guinos Chis
olm's pistol ball. ilrnzolton boat it, and
our ninu canto very near iu lessening tho
tiiuo.
Now, lhe thing is roported over town,
and the Atlanta citizen cannot he found.
Oh, how and and harrowing will be his ac
count of that venture hereafter. Too
late for Ku-klux, or that might he brought
iuto his thrilling narrative.
Turned Out a Millionaire.
Mr. A. Barnett, who some fifteen years
ago sold papers of pi us, (apo, Ac., iu u
small shop in Columbus, is now iu Now
York, and is said to bo worth a million of
dollars. One of I In* rumors is that ho
oontiuunlly carries $100,Oik) of bonds on
his person. During the war ho engaged
in the overland blockade running, then
bad grocery stores iu Apulaehicoia und
Columbus, owned several steauibonts on
our river, which ho nftorwards sold nl
largo figures to (lie Jacksonville Railroad.
After tho war ho still resided iu Colum
bus a few years, thou turned up as com

ida, like Kimball did Goorgia—with (ho
bonds of (he Statu. Not long smee Mr.
Barnett removed to New York, whoro ho
has a bunking oflico. Ho is nil active,
shrewd man, aud his plans have paid him
well. Wo beliovo ho married his nieco.

—The placidity of expression worn by
man who is next in a full barber shop,
cannot be counterfeited.
—Lent doesn’t diminish the free lunch
attendance. This is remarkable.
—Actual count shows there nre 20,000

—The “Lady of Lyons" was first play
ed iu America in 1838, at Pittsburgh.
—Loafing does not pay very largely

—No Mayor's Court yesterday. Sev
eral cases are docketed this morning.
—Wo have hundreds of men ready to
serve their country iu well paid offices.
They don’t want the places, but if their

—Bolls of our civilization—tho school

The Temperance Movement.
Advocates of toinperanoe may have
grounds of hopo concerning the most
hardened drunkards. Harry Hill, of
New York, is going in for temperance.
He wrote to a committee of ladies, and
tenders thorn his Variety Theatre—ono of
tho most vile aud degrading diruco houses
in Now York—ou Houston stroot, to hold
tomporuuco mootings on Sunday uight.
Ho would also furnish tho uso of his or

to mako money out of it. If lhe “zootie"

Thoughtful comparison will show to
tho satisfaction of all that our rich meu
iu tho vast majority of oases were poor
before tho war, aud the rich ones then
are poor now. It illustrates some of the

por cent, of these have been eternally
smashed. The leading capitalists now
are not those of I860, or the year before
