TIIAT’N THE WAY TO DO IT.
Too much and too long have the poo-
pie of the South—those especially who
nro in debt or have to procure ‘'advances"
—relied upon tho labor of flood nogroes
to build them up to iudopeiulcuco agaiu.
It lias not worked satisfactorily so far,
ami there is no evidouco tlmt the coadi-
tiou is improving, it is ono of the things
that prompts the making of so much cot
ton—cotton wherewith to ruiso mousy to
pay for hired labor that barely repays tho
nost of employment. We may regard it
ns almost certain that iu the proportion
in which land-owners roly upon their own
labor and tlint of their families, in tho
same proportion will they docrouHe their
cotton and iuorou.o their provision crops.
While, therefore, it is at Unit thought
saddeniug to hoar t hut Hu tunny planters
have tit curtail their foroo of hired no-
grocs, it is at ilia sumo time encouraging
to have tho iiasuranoo that this will work
a partial reform iu their farming economy,
and ono that will bo apt to lay tho basis
of a stable and growing proporty.
Tho following report, which the Orifliu
vYir </v» makes, of the oourso which many
planters in middle Georgia are pursuing,
is one that ought to iuHpiro hope iustoud
of despondency. Wo have an abiding
faith that the resolute ami self-reliant
class mentioned will, at tho close of tho
year, find themselves bettor off than they
bavo lioeii for six or oight yours past, and
will discover that they have at last made
the first sure and reliable advance towards
indepoudenco nud prosperity. Tho New*
nays: "Jho planters iu this section are
striving to release themselves from debt
and make themselves independent. They
have largely curtailed thoir force, and
many are running plows theiusolveH.
Wo know of soino mou who last year
employed at least thirty negroes. This
your the number bus been reduced to ten,
aud tho planter bus taken charge of a
plow. Another farmer employs no ne
groes, where ho h\d many last solemn,
and he and all his sous are doing all the
farm work. Wo hear of other instances
of this kind, aud bolievo it u fair indica
tion of tho people generally. Negro la
bor is cheaper sml more abumlaut than
at any period siuco the war. lurtoad of
boiug sought after. usUorot f oro has boon
tlio case, numbers axo begging for work.
Hands which last year oowmandod $luo
aud $130 u year, now only ask $50. Many
out of employment seek to labor for
clothes and food, yet planters will not or
axe uutible to give that. Those “wander
ers” are, lioweve*, allowed to cultivate
land at a small rental, but they must sub
sist themselves, J his is the gouornl con
dition. Whites are leading tho forces iu
the field in active operations."

WKllSTKli’s DICTIONARIES.
We beg to call thu attention of our
readers to tlxo advertisement of ltobert
E. Park, general agent for Webster s Dic
tionaries for Georgia. Swift ouoo wrote
u capital satire ou “tho ba'tU of the
books," but what to him was a burlesque
iu this day seems to bo a reality, for wo
have now a veritable battle of tho Dic
tionaries—Worcester and Webster bat
tling for tho mastery. While there is
much to commend in the former
dictionary, and while it has met
tho approval of mauy exuiueut
scholars, it never seems to have met the
wants of as does tho great work
of the greatest lexicographer of our lan
guage -Webster. From choice, and after
carefully comparing the merits of both
and considering our own wants iu this
liue, wi‘ some years ago procured a Web
ster's Unabridged; and wo never npeut
ten dollars more profitably. Mr. Park,
the agent, is located at Macon; aud as
dictionaries are absolutely essential to
every j>» t-ou that reads or writes, we hope
his ugeu<-y may prove a source of profit to
himsell. ns we know his dictionaries will
be of bouefii to (he purchasers.
