ATTEMPTED RAPE AT TROY. | RECOLLECTIONS OF 1*40 ASD lH4t
Indignant Cltl»en$-Th* Wretch in Jail. J
A report, full of horror for tho dastard
ly outrage, reaches us on undoubted an-
thoiity, from Troy, Ala., by yesterday’s
train. Oue Dr. Douglass, an Englishman
by birth, who formorly lived about Lin-
wood, removed to Troy several months
ago. Ha engaged rooms iu tbe house of
Mrs. Slope, where he boarded, and taught
scholars iu music. He is about sixty years
of nge. Among his pupils was a dunghter
of Mr. Nall, a warehouseman and Baptist
preacher—a gentleman who lost his right
arm iu tho Confederate army. He is a
cousin of Rev. J. II. Nall, tho pastor of
the Presbyterian church in this city. Tho
daughter is about twelve or fourteen years
of age—a mere child. Friday afternoon
this Dr. Douglass, after sho had taken her
lesson, asked her into his room, saying he
would remove some freckles from her
face. On~o inside ho locked the door and
attempted to ravish her person.
In his foul purpose, he did not succeed,
owing to tho screams of bis intended vic
tim. Sho was released and run home
crying to her mother, who lives a mile
away, and told her story. The father was
sent for. He immediately took a gun to
kill the rascal, but his wife caused hi in to
refrain from tho immediate purpose.
The child’s brothers ounouuced tho same
intention, and on goiug uptown louud
the city authorities had put DouglusB iu
jail to protect him from tho just iudigna-
ti m of citizens. The whole town was
aroused, and the talk was general of re
moving him from prison and hanging
him. Cooler counsels prevailed. We have
heard nothing further. Such demons
should bo shot without mercy.
Something About *•Please Leave My
iVame Out.”
The Mayor’s Court is a public one, and
many readers desire to see its proceedings,
while some, perhaps, do not. Neatly ev
ery oue is interested iu the business of
public courts. NVheu a man comes be
fore one, his unrno ceases to bo liiH own
property. He is tried in opeu court, and
the public buys papers iu order, umong
other things, to find out what is done
with those who are eh .l'ged with violating
the ordinances. Wo tind that many
pursuits fear more newspaper publication
than they do any fine which may bo im
posed by Ibo Mayor. Now, if it is known
that the established rule of a newspaper
is to publish the name of every ono who
appears before tbe Mayor, would it not
tend to keep many from acting disorderly
on every angry impulse? If one has
committed no offense, and yet is summon
ed beforo tho Mayor on tho charge of
having perpetrated one, what objection
can he have to appearing before tho court,
got discharged, and tho fact being pub
lished ? A rowdy has as much right to
have his namo left out of the proceedings
of courts as the finest gentleman in the
land, especially when offenses are equal.
Highway Robbery.
We aio iuformed of a most daring
and outrageous highway robbery perpe
trated iu sight of Columbus on Tuesday
afternoon, between 1 aud 2 o’clock. It
was committed by four negro women—
nymphs of Front street—upon two white
ladies of Chattahoochee county, who were
returning homo unattended by r.ny man.
The looulity was near tho first branch tho
other side of Cooley ville. Tho white wo
men had brought cbickous, eggs and but-
tor to Columbus for sale, and wore re
turning with coffee, sugar, tobacco, Ac.
Tho negro wornou drew knives on them,
beat on& of them, and forcibly robbed
them of what they had. T he ladies did
not return to the city, but continued
their journey butue—one of them having
an infant with her.
