adopted a resolution instructing the Judi
ciary Oommittoo to enquire what legisla
tion is necessary to compel the State of
West Virginia to pay hor proportion of
the aute-war debt of old Virginia.

nounced l>y every member who spoke, ex-
oept Rmler, of Massachusetts, who de
fended it as a means of making rich cor
porations and individuals pay their delin

Coukling presented a petition of Mor
ton, Griswold, aud other t ominent citi
zens of New York, holders of the bonded
indebtedness of the State of Lonisiana,
stating the Legislature of that Stato is en
gaged in the process of repudiation, aud
praying Congress that the bill introduced
by Sonutor Carpenter bo passed, or some
tantamount legislation bo had to protoot
their right. Referred to tho Committee
on Privileges and Elections.

increase over last yoar. Tho Republicans
aro gaining in Greenland and Newcastle,
while tho voto in Ryo thus far indicates a
Democratic gain.
The Democrats and Liberal Republi
