Why didn't you atato that the letter was

The Marianna Courier reports tho sule

Fla., nt ton cants per acre, 300 ncros at
ten couts, and 200 Boren ut iivo cents.
These salon were made by the Sheriff, un

Nothing easier. Just ouforoo tho va

make and enforce thorn, and tho numhor
of thieves will be greatly diminished.
Tiik Montgomery Journal roports, with
out 11 word of disapprobation, tho mar

man and a wbito woman. Tho Advertiser

the ceremony bitterly denounced tho de

negro was a hard specimen of his race.”
The new State obligations of Alabama,
prepared by authority of tho Funding net,

issued in n few days. Thon Alabama
will have mouoy of her own, and can look
with supremo indifference upon the strug.

given much thought to such subjects, and

Telegraphic mention has been several
times made iu onr columns of tho prac
tice of the Fnitod States war vossols near
Koy West with torpedoes, <tc. Tho ren
dezvous «>f a number of the irou-clads and
other vessels of tho navy was ordered
with a view to n test of tho facility with
which they could be mnim-uvorod iu an
ongng mioni; us well as the efficacy of the
torpedo as au instrument of naval war
fare. The evolutions of the vessels are
reported to have been very satisfactory.
Tho torpedo was also shown to bo a won
derfully destructive agent, but not always
reliable. Tht-so aro not tho otllciul re
ports, which have not yet boon made pub
lic. Of tho practice with the torpedo,
the New York JJirald says: “ In the ex
periments with tho torpedo, the couutry
has never boon furnished with a more
complete exhibition of the destructive ca
pacities of this submarine projectilo, as
it is now known to military and naval
science. Admiral Porter in his recent
WHO RELEASED IAXTAX1A?
Now that Sintauta, the Kiowa chief, U
reported to ho on the war path again, the
question who effect'd his release, with
eome of 'he consequences thereof, is
mado tho subject of epiitolatory contro
versy between ei-Governcr Davis and
Genoral Sherman. It appears to have
comiuencod with u remark of the Geno*
ral, made to the Military Committee, that
bo would not shed a tear if Bantanta
should catch aud scalp Governor Davis.
This raised tho Governor’s bristles, and
ho reminded Sherman that it wss Presi
dent Grunt who procured the reloase of
Hantauta; that when Grant first requested
tho release of the Kiowa chief, he (Davis)
objected, but was finally induced to do so,
‘to save the pledged faith of the Presi
dent and tho United States Government "
(from which it appears that President
Grant had been uoling as Governor of
,s—de facto, we suppose—and in this
capacity had promised pardons to Bantan
ta and Rig Tree). Davis says that ho not
only pardonod them reluctantly, but thut
ho did so iu reliance upon five solemn
promises made to him by tho President,
which promises have not been kept! Bo
it appears that I10 “saved the plighted
faith of the President," but when it came
to tho President’s tirno to observe plighted
faith, it wasu't saved worth a straw. This
is a pretty heavy insinuation for a Repub
lican to make; aud a carpet-bagger at
that!
Sherman replied that Davis was tho re
sponsible man ; ho took no notioo of tho
latter’s charge of tho blarno upon Grant;
and he abated not to the extent of u sin
gle hair the pious wish thut Bantanta
might g^t Davis' scalp. Rut ho tried to
wilt Davis with the reminder that ho
(Sherman) had pnt bis own lifo in joop-
ardy to seo if Bautnnta did really moan
war, and that he would not do it again.
Davis rejoined thut Bhurman had not met
his statement (hut Grunt procured the re
lease of tho chiefs by rnuking to them a
prouiiso, which I10 oould not and Davis
had to perform ; and ho ironically tolls
tho Gonornl that it seems “Bantanta and
Rig Troo are only condomnablo heouusu
their exploits happened lo scare the Gen
eral in Chief of tho United States army."
Duvis’ scalp is still untouched; Shcrmuu
has gut over his scare; Grant is making
no progross in the fulfillment of his five
solemn promises, but tho last accounts
roport tho Kiowas as having made a raid
into Uotnanchoo oonnty, Texas, and
burned tho houses aud carriod off tho hor.
nos and tho scalps of a numhor of citizans
of thut county. Thus it is that tho inno
cent aro made to suffer for tho blunders
or ueglout of tho guilty.

white settlers, he says, are continually
going further south, are are now nearly
down to the everglades.
Dr. Perry is from Michigan, hut has
speut the last five years in Southorn
Florida. Of the unexplored lake Okee-
chobbeo, about which he has spout a
good deal of Lis time, he says: “It is a
muddy sheet of water, generully shallow
and difficult to navigate on accouut of
water lettuce, lilly pods, etc. There arc
many grassy islands frequentod hy birds ;
he did not discover tho large island on
which it is said thero are stone ruins.
—It is rolatod that a colored member of
tho Louisiana Legislature created much
excitement, Iho other day, by rising to
make u speech while he held in his hand a
large piece of pie. As he proceeded, ho
would make a few remurks and then take
n bite from tho pie and refresh himsolf.
When the mouthful was disposod of, ho
would argue the case ug-iin for a few mo
ments, and then console himself with
more pastry, and when tho pie was ex
hausted ho surrendered the floor. Certain
local journals ridicule the man's conduct,
but wo aro not sure that the general com
mingling of orntory und pie in our legis
lative halls would not be an excellent
thing. A good many of our Congressmen,
for instance, are much more efficient as
consumers of pio than as legislators, and
if we could induce them to talk loss aud
eat more, the session would be shorter,
tho bills for printing the Congressional
Jtrrord would be smaller, there would
he 'ess suffering among constituents
who ’low have speeches mailed to
them, und the country would not
be humiliated by ho great a display of
ignorance and incapacity as is now made
constantly in tho Capitol.—Phila. Jiulle-
lin.
—The House Committee on Agriculture
bus reportod adversely on tho bill for tho
exchuuge of cotton seed with tho Egypt
ian government, for tho reason that the
Egyptian seed does not suit tho climate
of our Southern States. Sumo years ago
a largo quantity of tho Egyptian seed wus
distributed hy tho Agricultural Depart
ment in all the Southern States, and in all
it failed, both iu quality and productive
ness. The Commissioner of Agriculture
says that, as far as known, no country
produces cotton or cotton soed equal to
ours. Lnst yoar tho Khedive of Egypt,
through the Agricultural Department,
bought twenty tons of our seed, aud it
was shippod to him by a house in South
Carolina.

There is something terribly fascinating
in a conflagration, particularly if in addi
tion to tho certainty of a loss of property,
thero lie any danger to tho lifo or limb of
the firouiou nr others. This fusciuation
induces everybody, oven in largo cities,
where fires aro common, to hasten to tho
point of danger, wlioro they sucoood in
gelling themselves in the way and pre
venting tho effectiveness of tho firemen.
Iu large cities, however, two classes of
tueu tiro on hand tho moment tho firo sig
nal is sounded, viz: tho police and tho
regular firemen. Tho police nt once
throw ropes uiound tho place whore the
burning is, to shut out idle lookers on and
robbers, and to ouuble the firemen to go iu
and battle with the ftatuos uniuontnberod,
and any man going within tho sacred pre
cinct of those robos, is caught by a vigi
lant officer aud jugged at ouco us a sus
picious character. In proportion to pop
ulation, tbero aro as many criminals iu a
small town as a large one, aud thieves,
under tho mask of friendship, are as apt
to prey upon others, in tho case of a fire
hero in Columbus, as they would in Now
York. Wo are reminded of this by the
sounea in aud around Mrs. Patten's house
on .Sunday. Long before tho firemen
woro ready to work tho building was
swarming with men, who bolongod
to no organized city force. Borne
of those were gentlemen, whose
sympathies led them at personal risk
to save every article of tho uafortuuato
people’s goods they oould. Rut many who
gained admission ou this pretext were
thieves—-black aud whilo—uud tin y
