Alabama, of late, appears to bo tho land
of blood—of crime of every description.
The word may mean “Hero wo rest,'' but
bod laws and worse judgos, who give im
munity to criminals, havo changed it to a
rest iu the grave.
On Friday Mr. Larkin Allen, wbo>o
home is in Clay county, Ala., distant from
Columbus seventy miles, came to tho city
with a wagon loud of chickens, &c. 1ft)
was proprietor of a small store in h s
county, and has visited this place every
fow months for a long period of years, in
order to sell country produce, aud was
well known in tho city. On this trip ho
was accompanied by his wife. Ho dis
posed of his stock in trade for souio three
huudrod dollars.
LEAVES FOR HOME.
Having bought sonio $250 of goods
from the Eagle uml Plicnix manufactory,
ho startod for home. They encamped
that night very near Mr. Velati's placo

from Columbus.
PERFECT BKCURITT,
the aged pair thought, was around them.
They were within call of soveral houses,
and on tho side of a public thoroughfare.
No suspicion of danger lurked iu their
bosoms. They forgot, however, they
were in a State controlled by officers
whose statutes support lawlessness, and
with judges who were forced on the peo
ple by tho votes of tho ignorant and pre
judiced, aud whose terms have not yet
expired. Thoy did not dream of this;
oxen were unyoked, fire built, and the
good wife commenced propuing suj.pi
TUB MURDERERS ON THE TRACK.
The pair hud noticed in tho afternoon a

They knew him, uud what ho came for,
and supposed lie would return homo with

THE DEED OF MURDER.
About 7 o’clock those negroes cauu* to
tho camp firo —they said to got warm.
Becoming troublesome Mr. Allen ordered
thorn away. Thoy retired very sullenly.
Mr. Allen steppod into his wagon t6 gut
something, when tho black villaius re
turned hastily. One tired at Mr. Allen,
emptying two load i of buelc-shot from a
double-barrel gun. Tho body fell uerosw
the tongue of the wagon, whore it was
found.
ATTEMPT TO KILL MRS. ALLEN.
Mrs. Allen commenced screaming. She
was ordered to desist, but would not. A
villain then tired a gun loaded with small
shot at her. Ho missed his aim, but the
weapon was so close that tho powder
burned her face badly, and sot her bon
net on firo. This produced tho impres
sion at first that she had been shot in tho
faco. Her bonnet was nearly burned up.
THE MURDERERS MISS THE ROOTY.
Mrs. Allou confined screaming, and the
neighborhood was aroused. Boon Mr.
Velati, ilirnm Gibson, aud others arrived.
Mr. Allen was lying senseless across tho
tonguo of the wagon, bleeding and cover

carried to tho house of Mr. Goo. T. L)iich,
near the Holland pluce, where ho died in
two hours. On examination it was found
that his pocket-book, containing $40, was
intact, and the goods were undisturbed.
coroner's inquest
was holdyosterduy. Verdict was that de

were carried to Clay county by Mrs. Allen
on last night's train.
LARGE REWARD.
Much oxcitewonl was manifested in
Browneville «u tho reception of the news
of the murdor. A mooting was called,
and in fifteen minutes a sum of over $20t)
raised ns a reward for tho apprehension
of tho murderers. Two negro men gave
$15. One said give him time, aud he
would raise $250 from his own race. The
Governor of Alabama will doubtless offer
