Person a i.. —A streak of hilarity, iu the
shape of John Qotumn of the Talbotton
Standard, enlivened our sanctum for u
short time yesterday. John was iu his
happiest humor, and his hearty laugh
gavo our old cobwebs a merry shaking

The next State elections are t
Connecticut on the first Monday, and
Rhode Island on tbo first Wednesday
April. The canvass iu Connecticut
quite animated, and both parties are si
gumn, ns usual. Rhode Island politics
never command much attention outsido
of the little Stale, and this year is
caption. We presume that the Republi
can ascendancy is iu no danger tlioro,
though we have intimations of sharp per
sonal contests.
A cnnioUH demand has been made
behalf of Wm. M. Tweed. Judge Davis,
in sentencing him, verbally made the
mistake of naming the County Juil us tho
place of Ids confinement, but he nftor
wards directed that he bo carried to
lihickwcll'M Island, which was done.
Twood’s counsol now contends that tho
litoral sentence us passed upon Tweed in
court cannot be changed by a subsequent
order of tho Judge, and daman Is that he

one, and Judge I irmly lias it uuder con
sideration.
It is said that llrighaui Young is now
organizing a new association, by which lie
hopes to maintain his supremacy over tho
Mormons, and even increase his wealth
and power. He has instituted a kind of
communistic orguuiz ition called the
Order of Enoch, which he says ho was
oommandod to do by revelation. All tho
members of tho order vest their prop-
orty iu tho church, nnd this gives Brig
ham absolute control of most of thorn,
because if they withdruw from tho order
they go out penniless. Tho schotuo was
started find, at Ht. Goorgo, n growing
town in tho southern part of Utah, and it
ih said to have boon adopted there with
enthusiasm. It will be extended to Hslt
Lake am! other places, and may boromo
a prominent feature of Mormon society.

Mr. Hoopor’s book “Dowu tho Hivor”
has boon received by Mr. Chaffin. It is
handsomely gotten up by K. J. Halo A’
Non, of Now York, and humorously illus
trated by 11. I. Stephens. Fictitious
names are given in tho narrative ami cor
respondence. It is quite successful in
exhibiting the absurdities of “Code" eti
quette, its hollow pretences nnd serio
comic follies. Those who have been an

whou it appoured will not bo disap
