jjjteUS IOI.I NIII K, LA. : SATURDAY APKIL 4, 1874. Six Little I'vvl on (he I'eiulvr. In my heart thoro llvotti a plcturo Ot a kitchen rude and old, Whore the tire light tripped o’er tho rafter, And reddened tho rout's brown mould; iStlJing the steam from tho kettlo That bummod on tho fast warm-hearth; Throughout all tho live-long evening, In measures of drowsy mirth. Uecamo of the three light shadows That froseood that rude old room. Because of the voices echoed Up mid the rafters’ gloom : Because of tho feet on tho tender, Six restless white little teot; Tho thoughts of that dour old kitchen Are to me so fresh and sweet. And whon tho first dash on tin window Told of tho coming rain ; O, where aro those fair young f#cos I’hat crowded against the pano ? Au l bits or tho fire-light stealing Ttiolr dimpled cheeks betwoen ; Went struggling out In the darkucss, In shreds of silver sheen. Two of tho foot grew weary One dreary, dismal day ; And wo tiod them with snow-whlto ribbon, Leaving them there by tho way. Thoro was fresh clay on the fender That dreary winter night; For tho four little feet had traekod It From his grave on the gray hills bright. Ul why, on this darksotno ovoning— This cvonlng of rain and sleet; Host iny loet all alnno on tho hoarth-stono, (), whore aro those other foot? Are thoy treading th e pathway ol virtue, That will bring them together above; Ur have they wado steps that will dampen A sister’s tlreloss lovo? OPELIKA DIRECTORY. Doctors. OB. I. T. Ilia Lecture least Niff lit—A Brlillaut Supper at l*cn»o*tt. Honorable Z. 13. Vance, ex Governor of North Carolina, looturod at DeGive’s last night, to nu audience of about four hun dred pooplo. Among other thiugs he Raid, iu substance, as follows ; That tho Jews wore tho greatest commercial poo plo in tho world; there is a river in the ocpftu (tho Gulf Stream) of largo expanse, whose waters ebb and flow all unaffected I< v iho turbulent billows aud furious wave* surrounding if; nnd so there is a river among mankind which refuses to mingle with surrounding waters, uud whoso own characteristics can bo distin guished by tho naked eye. This river is tho Jewish people. For thousands of years they havo pre served tho same customs, tho same forms, uud cherished the same ideas and institu tions. With all the persecutions tho Jew ish people aud Cnurch are still standing, though the stones of their temple have fallen. Every Christian church to-duy is a graft upon tho stock of tho Jewish Cuurch, and each Christian perpetuates tho Jew. The beauties and riches of Palestine, and the condition of the Jew ish times wore ouch told of with glow- iug language aud thoughtful expression by the lecturer. Jerusalem, ho said, still sits iu solitary grandeur, on Judea’s hills, uud the Htoues of its temple, though crumbled, are reverenced, and just as thought is more lasting than gratitude, will romain revered to the end. The pyramids inuy fade and fall away, and no deep-seated remembrance remain, but Je rusalem shall always stand a bright er uud more glorious monument limn towering spiro of any church iu Christ endom. The wnudering and sufferings of these pooplo during eighteen hundred years is not to be pursued, nor would bo, as a Christian man, wish to do it, for it staggers .human credulity to believe it all. And what does their religion convey in this particular? That the wrath of ligious bigot is worse than the cruelest tortures of hell. Mr. Vance hero de scribed the peculiarities of tho various classes of Jews in different countries, putting those iu Europe and America among the most intelligent and progres sive. Their great longevity, freedom from malarious diseases, nnd peculiari ties of form, wore also spoken of aud described. Mr. Vance said that as n mau who had given the subject tho greatest study nnd utmost attention, ho would sort that tho Jews to-day are tho soberest, must industrious and moral people on the globe. Ho said he never knew yet of a Jew being imprisoned for anything above a misdemeanor. They contribute much in charity to tho Gentile, but uovor asked them charity in return. The most they havo ever asked has been to be let aloun. If a Jow breaks down in business they set him up again, aud he never saw a Jew that could not read, write and com pute figures. Tho lecturer said that Jo had faults as citizens, and believed thoro wero Jow swindlers, but not enough of thorn to compare with Christian swindlers. He had found that a Jew could not make a living iu New England, for Jounthau, with n knife and Bhingle, could whittlo Isaac out of his door steps before he was aware of it. Altogether Mr. Vanco’s lecture is tho bent of tbe .season, and pleased overy one who hoard it. IIo will make Atlanta an other visit next season and will pack De- Give’s from pit to dome. As a lecturer be is no less a success than as a popular speaker. After tho lecture, Governor Vance, ij response to prolonged applause, came oi the stage again, and made n neat littl speech on tho situation, filled with “hits” ou political abnse.s. THE BUrrER AT TEASE’S. After the lecture was over, Gov. Vanco, accompanied by tho Lecture Committee aud Directors, met a party of friends at Pease’s Club Room, whore a sumptuous supper was spread With a huge punch bowl io the coutre, champagne at every plate, and Gen. Robert Toombs, with his inimitable “talk,” at tho head of the table, the occasion was a brilliant on *. For an hour or so, Gou. Toombs, Gen. Colquitt, Col. Alston, Gov. Vance, and Mr. Hill, held the company iu hilarious eutertuinmeut; and then when the cham pagne bottles wero finally opened, Mr. Htllyer toasted “Zsb Value and tho Old North State. ” The Governor responded in a nobby and humorous um iuer. Gen. looinbs then being toaste I, arose and made oue of his telling spee-.hes, in tho midst of high applause. Mr. Hill then followed iu a handsome au l eloquent speech, for which we have no room to night. Gen. Colquitt then being toasted in a deserved manner by Mr. E V. Clarke, returned thanks, declining (is it was about 2k o’clock) to make a speech. It is seldom that four groat r nu*n than ‘Zeb ’ Vuuco, Bob Toombs, lien Hill and Alt red H.
