Sec. 8. Ho ifj further enacted, That it shall bo tho duty of the Judges of the Superior Gourds, at eaoh fall term, to give this act in apodal charge to the grand ju- rieR, that they may be informed of the du ties which this act imposes on them. Sec. 4. Repeals conflicting laws. » Dr. Pierce's Ninetieth IMrtlulny. A Macon correspondent writes: On yesterday, the 24th inst., there was a din ner given at the home of Bishop Pierce, near Sparta, Georgia, cortaiuly worthy of mention. It was strictly a family reunion, bnt a gentleman not a relative, from Ma con, was invited, and attended. Tho oc casion waa the 00th birthday of tho imme diate parent of the fumiiy, Dr. L Pierce. Twenty-five persons sat down to tho table besides the Maoou representative. There wore four generations present, including ohildren, graud-childreu and great-graud-cbildren. It waa a happy night rarely ever witnessed, and the grodt bishop and his fathor must have set it down as an epoch oven in their eventful lives. OPELIKA DIRECTORY. Doctors. LECAL NOTIOE8. The New York Catholic Ilevietc says : "The llomainc Rcligieuxe iuforuis us that (he Catholic priest who behaved so gal lantly on the ill-fated Villa dit Havre was Father Simon, of Nashville;. He was horn at Sommercourt, France, and loft his country for America whilo quito a young man. His untimely death, terrible as it was, was a most noble one, anti a Protestant lady who lost her only daugh ter in tho catastrophe said of him: T never saw a braver man or a bottor Chris tian. Ho did us all much good by his prayers. His voice was tho last wo hoard ns the ship wont down. Ho was eryiug out in a loud tone tho words of tho Abso lution.’ ” —The Kaleigh Ncm thinks tho earth quake on Bald Mountain has boon pro lo no publico. It says: It has caused fifty- five conversions to religion, broken up twenty-seven illicit whiskey distilleries, drove from the country two sub-revenue officials, rid tho mountains of a sorry preacher, and furnished us sovora) col- umns of reading matter. On the other hand, the damage is slight, for had it broken up all the crockery in the moun tains, the loss would not have been £10, while Mrs. Nannie’s chimney would have tumbled with tbo first strong wind. Arbitration Between Nations.—Tho following is one item of Mr. tiumnors will: 9. I bequeath to tbo President and Fol Iowa of Harvard College one thousand dollars in trust for an annual prizo for the best dissertation by any student of tho collego or any of its Schools, undergrad uate or graduate, on universal peaco and the methods by which war may bo perma nently suspended. I do this in the hope of drawing the attention of students to the practicability of organizing peace among nations, which I sincerely believe tuny be doue. I cannot doubt that tho sauie modes of decision which now pre vail between individuals, between towns, and between smaller communities, may be extended lo nations. Death of a Davoiiter of the Late Senator Benton.—Madam GauldrinBoi- leau, the wife of Baron Boileatt of Paris, daughter of the late Senator Thomas II, Benton, and sister of Mrs. Gen. Freni out, died in Paris on the 10th instant. Her husband wus recently Bonteucod to prison for three years for participation iu the Memphis and £1 Paso Kail toad affair, iu which General Fremont was engaged, and her death is attributed to the anxiety and mortification resulting from her hus band’s troubles. She leaves sir small children. —The Baltimore Gazette puts tho ad vertising question thus strongly, and 1 commend what it s tys to our rcudors being true in every respect: “Iu this i lightened day and generation it would be a work of supererogation to attempt to prove the inestimable value of advertis ing. Its immense advantages to business men of every description are so positive and decided that no argument is required to impress them upon tho community. While vast fortunos have boeu made by judicious advertising, it is known that tunny who might lmvo become rich trade have failed to do so, because they did not seize the golden opportunity, aud nuke the public thoroughly acquainted with the place and manner in which their business wus transacted." —The growth of Texas may bo under stood by reference to tho vote polled a few months ago. The entire voto of the State was 158,000, indicative of a popula tion of 1,050,000. In 1800 tho popula tion was hut 004,000, and in 1870 it num bered 818,000. An increase of nearly a quarter of a million in less than throe years is absolutely wonderful. The best blood and energy of tho Huiith are con centrating on her magnifioouL plains, and it is there that New Orlesus should look for patronage.—N. O. Picayune. —The House Committee ou Territories, by a voto of six to one, have agreed to recoiuineud the passage of a bill for tho admission of New Mexico as a Btato iu tho Union. —Arthur Orton, the Tichborne “claim ant," on being weighed at Newgate, in accordance with the rules of the prison, waa found to turn the scale at 850 pounds.
