Another of the first settlors of Colutn- I>uh. a good man and a good citizen, is gone. A long life of usefulness is ended, and a model officer, of the olden school, when honor and probity reigned, baft ta ken Mr. departure from north. Mr. John Johnson died at his residence in Columbus yesterday morning at 10 o'clock. He wfts horn on May 10th, 1801, in Greene county, Ga., and hence v/os nearly seventy-four yoars of age. The vast changes in tho material progress of this contury ho has witnessed and ad vanced with, stop by step. To Columbus came from Greeno county in 1828, and since, forty-six years, this city has been his homo. On his first arrival, tho Queen city of tho Chattahoochee was a mere collodion of huts, with the Indians ronming nil over it at will, and ho has seen it oxtond and widen until now it is tho first manufacturing city of the Month. Mr. Johnson came hero with a Jettor tho Presbytorian Church in Greens boro, which ho hod joinod when some twonty-throo yoars of ago. In June, 1830, s one of tho fow who constituted and organized tho first Presbyterian Ihnrch in this city, of which ho was olect- of tho Kuling Elders, which posi tion ho hold to his dyiug day. Though l'rosbyteriau, his heart was full of char ily for all denominations of Christian*, and to tho extent of his means labored generously to advanco tho c.aano of his Master. 1845 ho bocame Clerk of the Info- Court, which then had jurisdiction both of county matters and thoso n< pertaining to the Ordinaiy. In 1847 tho Court of Ordinary was instituted, and Mr. Johnson elected nsJudgo. He held tho place until 1808—twenty-one years— when Fodornl bayonets, assisted by the ogrocHj olectcd Mr. J. W. Duer. Mr. Jerry Torry, olectcd by tho sumo party County Treasurer, was unable to give d, when Ordiuary Duer appointed Mr. Johnson to that post. Muscogee Board of Education—Meeting Yesterday and Iteaolutione. The Board of Education for Muscogee ci^iuty met at the Court-houso yesterday. Present—W. G. Woolfolk, J. T. Gray, E. A. Jenkins, C. E. Johnson and N. G. Otis, Secretary. Mr. J. T. Gray offered tho following solutions: • That the Secretary of this Board be in structed to notify teachers of tho county that the Public School* will be opened the first day of July and continue throe months, closing the thirtieth day of Sep tember. ThAt tho Secretary be instructed not to grant license to any teacher who is not competent to teach a primary sohool.
