farther facilities offered for proof in his

Judge Busteed will open court in Mo
bile on the fourth Monday in April.
Tipton made a lengthy speech in the
Senate to-day on the Louisiana bill, in fa-
vor of the MoEnery government. He
thought the President should withdraw
tbe troops from Louisians, and the Mo
Enery government, now held in abeyance
by Federal foroea, would soon be put iu
power by tbe people, as tbe present legis
lation would have the State with troops.

The House Committee on Hallways, nt
a meeting to-day, authorized Gen. Hnrl-
bert to draft a report in favor of tbe con
struction of a double-track freight rail
road from the Mississippi Valley to tide
water at or near New York. The com
mittee have taken considerable testimony
npon the cost of the transportation of
grain over suoh a road. The evidence
shows that it oan be moved for fifteen
oenta a bushel from Chicago to New York,
and at corresponding rates from other
points in the Mississippi Valley.

A foil Cabinet to-day discussed the
situation in Arkansas and the Senate
Finanoe bill. No positive indications yet
to what will be the notion of the Exoo-

The English Budget.
London, April 17.—The budget shows,
including tho Geneva award, bat exclu
sive of the Ashnntee war, over a
million pounds sterling in ezoess of tbe
estimates for next year, and shows a sur

based upon Gladstone's estimate. Among
the menus of reducing excess by tbe pres
ent ministry, is about a million on tbe
tariff on sugar. Tbe abolition of the dnty
on sugar ceases on tbe first of May,

laws.

President Grant's Reply Non-Com

Washington, April 17.—The commit
tee appointed at a reoent meeting of tbe
leading brokers, merchants and capitalists
of New York, called on the President to.
dey, and presented s petition signed by
2,600 persons, asking him to voto tbe Sen
ate Finanoe bill. Two of the delegation
made speeches against the bill as inimi
oil to tbe best interests of tbe country,
and as opposed to tbe pledges of tbe na.
tion for an early resumption of specie
payments.
The President, in reply, did not indi-
oate what bis notion would be. Ho said
all bed tbeir various views, and he had no
donbt, if be lived in New York, he would
think with (he committee, that tbe whole
world ought to think os they did. He hud
never given any measure more attention
than be had this one.
On the Senate bill, bis views were al
ready known. He had been opposed to
inflation without redemption, and was in
favor of redeeming the pledges hereto
fore made for a reaumption of Bpsoie pay
ments.
The committee return in tbe uncertain
ty as to what the President's oourse will
be on tbe bill.
