steamship L’Amerique sunk near the Is

vessel arrived at Brest this afternoon,

of War has telegraphed the commanding
officer at Little Book not to interfere in

Nashvillb, April 16.—The Cumberland
river is still riling one ineh au hour.
Broad street is several feat under water,
to the great damage of atorea and rssidan-
oes. Should th* water rise one foot more,
it will invade the basements of thirty or
forty business houses of Front street.
North of Broad street the merchants are
now moving goods and eotton to more ae-
enre places. One firm will have to move
60,000 barrels of salt, at a loss of $1,000.
The damage to goods and expense of
moving is already very largs.
The high water has caused serious dam.

The Tennessee river is very full and
rising at tba rate of two inches per hoar,
and threatens an overflow. The Cumber
land, Stone and Duck rivers are higher
than at any time sinoe 1847, and from
present indications they will reach or ex
cel that year.

storm yesterday. Planters throughout this

quence of the exoessive rains and high
