Boad train on the authority of a telegram
from the Chief of Police of Columbus.
Barnett asked potioeman Beck, who had
him in charge for safe koeping, to allow
him to taka a walk, at elaven o’oloek
night, down the street. While on this
walk Barnatt escaped the officer, and is
arid to have left the city,* leaving‘his bag.
gage behind. The next day a telegram
was reoeivsd from the Marshal of Colum
bus dirootiug Barnett's release. Butuett'i
aocount to the Chattanooga Marshal was
that “his trouble was brought about by
Mobile lawyer named Moses, who sought
to black-mril him (Barnett) out of mousy
unlawfully obtained by one Gray, on the
sale of some cotton, and that Gray had
left the Country and ia now in Texts. He
