We are glad to learn the City Light
Guards will have anothar picnia noxt
month. It is the universal desire of the
city that they may da so. The corps is
too gallant a body to be frustrated in auy
undertaking by a rainy day. Give them
fair weather, and large crowds will utteud
any exounlon they may get up.
Memorial Day:
The ladies of the Memorial Association
earnestly request that each member of
the military companion proparo himself
with a wreath for the occasion.
This is now a State holiday, end we
hope every merchant and business man
will close his store at 1 o’clock and devote
the evening to this sacred cause.
The grounds are now prepared, and the
ladies may decorate the graves of all the
soldiers.
It is hoped that on that day no graves
except those of soldiers will be deoorsted.

SCHOOLS.
The Publio Schools of Columbus are
the prida of the city. Our dty Inaugura
ted the system of the Stats. Who first
inaugurated them in Columbus is often
asked.
The Eagle Factory established snob
schools during the war. They supported
the institution. Though open to all—
and tuition wo* free—they never reoeived
the support of oitizens, though they were
attended by some five hundred pupils.
The factory was preparing to erect a
building on the North Commons, to cost
$100,000, and sll material bod been
bought and plans arranged, when the
Federal* earns along, burned the mill, and
all ended in ashes.
Subsequent to the war the need of suoh
schools beoome mors syidsnt. The whites
beoame poor. The North became very
generous to the blacks, and established
various sabools for them. Clsflin Acad
emy, the large building near the oeme-
tery, was ereoted. No aid came to the
South. The probabilities then wife that
more blacks would be eduoated than
whites. Columbus Georgians could not
stand this.
As Boon ss our military rule of four
years wss over, Ex-Mayor Jno. Mellhenny,
men of big heart and enlarged views,
and who wss then sn Aldsrman, intro
duced the first resolution in Council pro
viding for the present system of Publio
Schools to be supported by the city. He
wee warmly supported by Col. Salisbury,
who then was also an Alderman. The bill
passed, and sinoe the school* have been
in successful operation. The rioh at first
mode some objections to sending their
obildren there. Now all that has been
abandoned, and all, rioh and poor alike,
attend the schools.
Bev. Dr. J. H. DeVotie, President of
the Board of Trustees of the Eagle
Sohool, was eleoted to the same position,
under the new system. Messrs. Mellhsny,
Salisbury, and other* composing the
prosent one, with few exceptions, were
members of the Board. Every religious
denomination was represented.
The Tsustees bought the old
Presbyterian Oburoh building them-
selves, for fear the United Btstes
Government might foroe the btaoks
upon them, and in the event, of such a
claim they could rightfully show that this
house was private property. No such de
mand was made, however, as the action
of Georgia was suoh as to make the Fed
eral Government afraid to interfere with
her affairs, and all the adventurers were
banished from State offices.
Dr. Sears, Agent of the Peabody Fund
for the aid of Southern schools, came
here. He proposed to give to Columbus
driblets. Col. Salisbury, of the trustees,
led, and the entire board baoked him, in
stating that if he oould not give what Co
lumbus wss entitled to at once, he should
pay over nothing until he oould. The
result wss we were sided $2,000 at one
time.
To the boy school, the next year, wss
added a female sohool. Two years after,
a negro school was added. AU are taught
in separate buildings. The oolored pupils
aro taught by four oolored teachers, but
all are under the ooutrol of Superintend
ent George M. Dews and the Board of
Trustees—sll whites.
In our entertainments only white pupils
take part, though all the departments ore
maintained by the city.
Our schools are now attended by eight
hundred whitos and three hundred blaoks,
and are taught by fifteen white and four
colored teachers.
DSSIBE TO H1VB IT BXPXATXD.
The universal desire is to have the en
tertainment repeated, if not for the
schools, for the Publio Library. Will not
all consent ?
