Oar work is not the work of

The responsibility of the widow's

not at onr door. Onr mission
ia a nobler and a holier one; a mission of

Our offloe ia one wbioh requires the exer-

Every true fireman is aotnated by a
spirit of self devotion, heroio enduranee,
and nndanuted courage These virtues
we ere pleAsed to recognize in the gallant
members of Bescue Hook and Laddar No.

treated by the oitizens of Colnmbaa, and
w* would be worse than lugratea should
we fail, upon every proper occasion, to

Foremen G. Gnnby Jordan introduced
Beeae Crawford, Esq., of Columbus, who
spoke in substance as follows :
Ladiet, Gentlemen and Memberi of Troy
Hook and Ladder Company:
This is no ordinary ocoeaion, end it de-
man da no ordinary tribote. By the sur
roundings, it has gathered together tbe
fashion, the beauty, the intellect of Troy.
Allow me npon tbe part of tha Besooe
Hook aud Ladder Uompuuy No. 1, to
thank you for this very fl ittering menifes-
tion of yonr good will. Searcely a year
ago, tbe distinguished honor was con
ferred upon onr body to entertain yonr
gallant oompany. The acquaintances
made, and associations formed at that
time, will ever be reverted to *s one of
tbe brightest spots in onr recollections.
This is not tbe only reason wby that
oeewion mskes our beans leap with joy.
We are friends to the same cause end ene
mies to the earns foe. The idea may be
-indulged still farther. It be* been but s
few years since Alabama owed her alle-
gianoe to the gra; d old Empire State of
the Sontb end recognized her Constitu
tion, baaed npon those mighty oolnmns—
“Wisdom, Justice and Moderation.”
True, tbe idea may be indulged still
farther. The business relations of tbe
respective cities of Troy end Colnmbns
are ao olosely connected as to make them
identical. Tbs queen city of the Chatta
hoochee sends to these good people tbe

ever need onr service* in any great and
good work, whether to proteot yonr prop
erty or to rescue sleeping innoocnee from
its pillowy head, be aaaured that the Bas

the baianoe.
Reoeived with good applause.
Tbe companies then prooeedad to the

ing, some tan by twenty feet, oomposed
of very dry material, and nearly filled
with barrels covered with oil, Ao., bad
been ereoted for th* porpoee of trying
the justly celebrated “Champion Fir*

Tbs trial was a oomplete success. The
building was fired twioe, and esch time,
when in fall blaze, qnlokly extinguished
by hoaemen D. W. Appier end George
Moore. All evprened themselves per
fectly satisfied with tbe operation of tho
maohine.
Afterwards Mayor Griffin, of Troy, in a
pleasant little apaeuh, introduced Mayor
Gleghorn end the Colambna Aldermen to
tha Troy Hook end Ladder Company;
Mayor Cleghorn introduced the Troy
authorities to the Colnmbns oompany.
The entire party then adjourned to a
delightfol, shady grove in the aabnrbi,
where a bountiful supply of everything
necessary to tempt tho appetite end regale
tb* inner man waa spread upon the sev
eral long tables. Foil joatioe waa done to
it by the large company. Perfect order,

th* day, and th* ladiea, a large humber
of whom were present, th* members of
Troy Hook end Ladder Gompaey, th*
Ueyor and Aldermen, end oitieene gen

their gneeta.

attended by th* two oompaniee and a

tfany pretty maidens were present.

tures.
The danoing party at Murphrea'a Hail
at 9 j o’clock we* also largely attended,
and joy and mirth prevailed. Not a few
Colambna boys ware completely capti
vated.
This doted the exeroiaee of the day,
and tho invited gneeta started on their
return home, with happy hearts aud
pleasant memories of th* kind and hospi
table treatment of the good eitiiens of
Troy.
A lergo bonquet was presented to Fore
man G. Gnnby Jordan, with wbioh to
decorate hie trumpet, by Mlsaea Julia Wi
ley end Ophelia Worthy, two beautiful
young ladles of Troy.
A wine party waa given to tho Mayor

of Troy at 8 o'olock p. u , which was a
genial affair.
