Judge Crawford returned Friday, Maj.

to-day. The oommittee met a most kind
and courteous reception, and have little
doubt of receiving an appropriation for

Brood Street Church Picnic.
The Sunday School of Broad Street
Methodist Church gives a picnic next
Saturday near Smith's Station, on the
Western Bailroad of Alabama. The ob
ject it to complete the church-building.
The train will leave the Chattahoochee
depot at 7} o'clock' in the morning. The
membership hope that many will attend,
or that those who oannot do ao will pur
chase a ticket, which ia only fifty cents.

Kyle. Subsequently he waa elected Tax
Collector of the county. Afterwards he
again engoged in merchandising. During
the last few years he has seldom been seen
upon the streets. Mr. Chaffin waa a
good, honest man, of the clam whiob eve
ry eity ia proud to possess. Men who are
npnght and juat in all their dealings,
oourteous to all, and demand the earns in
turn. Hia recollections of faces and
names were remarkable. He had tha
oonfid^pca and esteem of the entire com
munity. His wife died a short time be
fore the war. Quite a large family of
ohildren and grandobildren survive him.
Hia antire life waa one of honor and use
fulness,and his last end was one of peace.
The older citizens of Colnmbns are fast
disappearing.

There waa one on the Fair Gronnde
track, between the animals known as tha
Gordon horse and Banka' mare. The
race waa for a fair aliad pnrse—three-
quarters of a mile heats, beat three in
five. Mr. H. G. Klink drove the Gordon
horse, Mr. Pryor the Banka mare the first
two aod Mr. Odom the last two. The
Gordon horse won the first aod seoood
heats, the Banks mare the third, and tha
Gordon hurae tha fourth, and the race.
The heats were well contested. Good
crowd ont, and some money ebanged
bands. The fastest time made was at the
rate of 8:1)8 to the mile.
It ia vary probabla the race will be re
peated next Saturday.

Twelve large farmers in the Oawiobee
neighborhood thiB year planted 5,802
sores in cotton, 2,380 in horn, and 417 in
oats. Last year they pnt 6,885 aerea in
ootton, 2,030 in corn and 410 in oa(s—
showing a deerspse of ootton and an in
crease in corn and oats. This waa also
reported to be the case north of the
Uohee creek. Opinions diffared as to
the yield of eorp, and also as to the status
of crops—some saying they were three
weeks behind, and othara that they ware
folly equal to last year.

President Houston, of Texas, in an
official order to one of bis generals,
