Wasxinutox, May 11, 1874.
Fo Hon. Eli Baxter, Little Book :
I recommend that the members of the
General Assembly'now at Little Bock ad
journ tor a reasonable time, to enable
Brooks to oall to the body his supposed
adherent*, so that there may be a full
Legislature. Any hasty action by a part
of tbe Assembly will not ba satisfactory
to tbe people. Brooks' friende her* agree
that if this oouree it pursued no opposi
tion will be mad* to the meeting of the
Assembly. The United States forces will
give all nsetemiy protection to the Legis
lature, and prevent, as far as practicable,
all violenoa and disturbance of tbe public
peace. Answer. U. B. Gxaxt.
The President to Brooks.
Wasbieotoe, May 11, 1874.
Hen. Joteph Brooke, Little Book :
I have suggested to Mr. Baxter that
the member* of the General Assembly
now in Little Bock adjourn for a reasona
ble time, eay ten days, to give you an
opportunity to oall in those members who
may not have responded to bis call, so
that there may be a full Legislature. The
United States will give all necessary pro
tection to the Legislature in meeting and
transacting business as usual at tbs State
House, and prevent aa far as practicable
all vioiene* and disturbance of tbe pnblio
peso*. I urgently request that tbe mil
itary of both parties be at onoe disbanded,
whioh is the first stop toward a peaceable
settlement. Answer.
