will have a landmark from which they

Whather this interpretation of Geo.
Grant’s aots be oorreot or not, and
whether he gets the nomination for a
third term or not, there seems just now
to be a strong probability that the
next Presidential race will be a
“scrub” one, end one with entries
representing advene sectional interests.
All the “scrub" Presidential squabbles in
our history have been attended or follow
ed by bitter contests and excitements
threatening the peace ot tee oonutry.
The issues now looming np, ss those that
will probably divide parties, or sections,
in 1876, are oertainly as provocative of
stubborn and prolonged contests as sny
others ont of whiob former “crises” have
arisen. We have good reason to hope,
however, that such a contest, with a new
cast of parties or the disruption of old
oues, will eupercede the sectional animos
ities that have so long been prolonged
since the war. Sectional strifes and the
reckless wars of faotions are always to be
deplored, and avoided if possible, bnt we
believe that in this instance they can
hardly get up a worse feeling than that
whiob they are likely to alley.
