The Counoil Chamber was largely filled
last afternoon with people of all classes,
who appeared to bear the invMtigation of
Col. French Strange, charged with aaMult
with intent to murder the proprietor of
this paper. Ia dne time the accused ap
peared, accompanied by one of bis coun
sel, J. M. Bussell, and Col. Geo. Hooper.
Justioe T. J. Chappell took hi* seat.
Defendant'* counsel stated that his
client bad received information from an
officer of the Superior Court that the
Grand Jury bad found indictmeutsagainst
him, and that he was then virtually in the
custody of the Sheriff; hence he moved
an order releasing Col. Strange and his
bondsmen for this appearance at the
investigation.
Justice Chappell stated be had reoeived
the satna information, and there was no
need of this bearing. The appearance of
Col. Strange released bimaelf and bonds-
and the indictments dismissed
the warrant before him. Oourt was ad
journed.
None of the prosecution or their attor
neys were present, having been informed
of the indictments, sad knowing, there
fore, there was no need of their attend
ing.
Col. Strange went to the offloe of So
licitor Little, where two bonds were as
sessed for his appearance before the Su
perior Court—one, “assault with intent
to murder,” #800; the other, “misde
meanor," (200. These are the oharges
presented by the Grand Jury. The bonds
were readily given.
The oases will probably be taken up
next week.
It waa reliably reported that the aooused

The jury in the case of Gaioes Chisolm,
charged with the murder of Penn Bedell,
in Atlanta, mad* up their verdict of “not
guilty” in half an hour after leaving the
courtroom. The Judge complimented
the body upon their patient and attentive
hearing to both sidM, and their impartial
verdict. Col. Peeples, Judge Wright, B.
H. Hill and Gen. Gartrall mad* spMobes
for the defense.
Chisolm made a long statement: Bedell
bad borrowed (300 of him in Maoon a
year before. On the night of the killing
he asked Bedell kindly for it, tailing him
that he had heard that bis house had won
(1,800 that day. Bedell then knooked
him down, stamped him, and continued
beating him until he was dragged off.
Half stunned, after being carried to the
guard houM and discharged, he went to
his business house and there washed.
Starting to go home, bis brother John
advised him to take a pistol, as Bedell
was a dangerous man, and if they met
would try to kill him. On going home
by the usual route, he and John heard
some on* say, “There they are, now."
Looking toward* the oar shed, be saw
Policeman Braaletou jump aside and Be
dell pointing a pistol at him (Chisolm).
He (Chisolm) immediately fired, before
Bedell did. He bad asked at on* or two
places before the fatal meeting where
Bedell was, in order to ascertain whether
Bedell bad been arrested for beating him.

Editor Enquirer .-—Tho proceedings of
tbs Committee, appointed by the City
Connoil, to investigate the oondnot of po
liceman Mitchell in arresting and impris
oning me on the 6th of this month, have
just come under my eye.
I desire to make the public acquainted
with a few fasts in regard to that inquiry.
I notioe that all the witness** sworn were
for the defense. -Whet the publio may
ooneider inactivity on my part, admits of
explanation. I waa ia the Court-house on
Wednesday, the 18th inat., and was
informed by the City Attor
ney that a Committee had been
appointed to investigate the eonduet of
Mitchell, and that it waa hi* duty to pros
ecute him for exceeding hi* authority;
though it waa alao hie dpty to defend
Mitchell in the , Superior Court, should
the Grand Jury iadlot him. He then re
quested me to go into the City Clerk’s of.
fire and furnish that officer with a list of
the witnesses against Mitchell. The
Clerk being out, the City Attorney took
the names down himself. Why they were
not subpoenaed and sworn can beet be ex
plained by those who conducted the in
vestigation. It aeems to my mind that
justice has net been dona te me.
I think this card is due to myself and
the public. D. H. Yaxokt.
