On* happened yesterday morning on Broad street, which came near resulMhg fatally to a oountry negro. A horse at. taohed to a vegetable wagon dashed be tween bin two-mule team and the side walk. To pyevant hi* animal* from start- lag, he endeavored to stop the hone, which he incoeeded in doing after, being dragged a little distanoe. He was ran fall against. A pair of l**n kin*—yolapt oxen—tried a frolic of their own and commenced a slow trot. The result waa that one fell down and was hauled by the other a few feet, until the latter becam&tired of the operation and sensibly stopped for his companion to get np; when both, satis- fled with their fun, rested under the shade of a tree. * tylnM Helot MogUtar, We were shown yesterday an elegantly bound and finished register for the Ran kin House. It is furnished with a tew advertisements of leading houees. The get up is exoellent. The book was gotten up by Mr. Charles K. Nelson, formerly a typographer in this office, and his exoel lent taste is shown in the genoral plan. The printing and binding waa executed at the Job office of Mr. Thomas Gilbert, and the work is equal to any which can be effeoted in the North or elsewhere. It ia admired and praised by all who have seen it. It shows that as good binding, print ing and snob work, and as oheap, can be obtained in Columbus a* in any Northern or Western city, and that orders for sneh jobs should be given to our home offloes, and thus keep money in onr own seotion. Three other books are being prepared for three other hotels in OolumlAis. Th, tithing tarty Hows* tht Blear. We have given those who went from Columbus on the Julia 8t. Clair. The Maoonits* who joined the boat at Fort Gaines are : Gen. Wm. B. Holt, W. B. Johnston, Thomas Hardeman, Geo. B. Turpin, Joseph Clisby, O. A. Nutting, Dr. John H. Baxter, Wm. H. Boas, Wm. F. Brown, W. D. (Kate) Palmer, James D. Holt, D. E. Norris, I. B. English, Jas per F. Greer, H. T. Johnson, John E. Jones, Hayne Ellis, Burr Brown, Wm. E. Flanders, W. W. Woodruff, J. W. Ader- hold, John Yalentino, Felix Oorpnt, N. T. Johnson, and Win. A. Barden (the last- named of Columbus.) Mr. W. B. Johnston got left at Ameri cas, and returned to Macon. Messrs. Pat Walsh and Henry Moor*, newspaper men from August*, are with th* parly. Th, Minister, Having a Uood Timo. The miniaters who went from Georgia and other Btatea to Jefferson, Texas, as delegates to the Southern Baptist Con vention, are having a good time, judging from the correspondence. After finishing their business, the roads tendered them exoursions all over the State. At Dallas, a place of 9,000 inhabitants and with street railroads, “the Mayor (General Gabel) welcomed the delegatee, and Dr. DeVotie, of Griffin, very happily respond ed.” The Texas Pacific Railroad carried them a long ride. It is stated this com pany has 80,000,000 acres of land in the State. <Mf «r« Appeal doekat was resumed. In the «IM of F. A. Jepeoa vs. C. O. Cody, aeoount, th* Jury returned a ver- diet of •1,060.79. Jeremiah Massey vs. John Wells—com. Jury found for the plaintiff fib. Mary Johnson, colored, vs. John Quin, administrator of Jams* Tarry. Jury found for th* defendant. Jss. M. Bmith, Governor, a**, Ac., B. M. Leonard, executor, vn. G. W. Martin, K. B. Goetohiua, Wm. Mahaffey and A. Gsmmel. Discontinued a* to Goetohius, and oohtinued. The Court is now oath* Appeal Docket. When this ia floished ease* placed to the heel will be taken np. They are as fol lows on tb* different dooket*: Claim Docket—Noe. i and 18. Illegality Dooket—Nos. 8, 4, 7, 8 and 10. Equity Docket—Nos. 7, 29, 80, 81, 82, 88, 84, 85, 89 and 40. Common Law Dooket—Nos. 28, 81, 85. There-are still-thirty-six oases on the Appeal Docket, many of wbioh will con sume but little time. To this dat* there are 144 easss on th* Criminal Dooket. Judge Crawford withdrew, for the pre sent, the application of Mr. Meugor Cor bett (not Torbett as we wrote yesterday) to be examined for admission to tb* Bar. He ia a one-armed Confederate. The Grand Jury adjourned Wednesday to Monday. Court adjourned to 3} a. m. to-day. Tarnation is Georgia «** Alet*is«. From a table published in th* last Financial Chronicle and Sentinel, based on tb* statistic* of 1870. Th* wealth per head in Georgia ia $220 47; taxation upon each f1,000, (true value) $9 79; taxation per bead $9 21. Ia Alabama wealth per head is f202 40; taxation upon each $1,000, (true vain*) $14 77. taxation per head $2 99. The comparison speaks for itself. La ter returns will show a muoh greater dif ference between the Slates—and all in favor of Georgia, which shows a lighter lax than in any Stnto in the Union, ex cept Texas. Both these States are offl. oared by whites and Democrats; Alabama by radioal Republicans. The paper adds: It will be noticed that in those Hunthern States where the gov ernment hsB been honest, taxation i* small, and it is only necessary this purify ing process be extended and the power in each Btate placed th th* bands of the tax payers to bring down taxation in oth er Slates. Brest Im County. Ala. The Alopatbic physicians of the county have organized a society which meets in Opelika on the first Tuesday in each mouth. Dr. T. R. Bussell is President; Dr. J. B. Barnett Vice-Trestdent and A. G. Emory Beoretary. County Commissioner, J. N. Preston, had a fine horse killod by lightning last week. A man was plowing at the time. He csoaped uninjured. There are six pigeon-toed and seven knook-knesd cadets at the Btate Agricul tural Collage at Auburn. Opelika has ordersd a Isvy of a tax of one-half per cent, upon th* real and per sonal estate of the city, to pay past cou pons and those due in July and, January, on bonds issued to the Savannah and Memphis Railroad. Opelika subscribed $25,000 to this road. Body Shund—A Watery Grave for Ttvtn- ly-Tw* Day,. The remains of Pat Martin, the oolored youth who, with a negro man, was drowuod in the river near Lovers’ Leap, waa fonnd yesterday near'the plaee at whioh he sunk. Though the body bad been in the water twenty-two days, it was in a fair state of preservation, and only a scarce perceptible taint of decom position could be discovered. A coffin was procured, and the remains osrried immediately to the cemetery, where they were interred. The body of the negro man him not yet been found. Buek Beer—Hew the Bern* mu Gelten. There are few who drink at all who have not tried Buok beer. All know it is twiee as strong as lager. Made of the same material, all the concentrated, drinks of twenty glasses of lager can be found in three or four of the buok. It oan be made in one season of the year. There ha* been considerable of it in Co lumbus. In the former German kingdom of Han over, is a town named Elmbeck, where, early as the eighteenth century (be cause of the most excellent water suits ble for brewing beer), there were 300 breweries exporting their products at a time when in the whole of Germany you oeuld hardly find a glass of tasteful beer. The exportation was especially made at Bavaria, and above all its capital, where of coarse that beer, to distinguish it from domestic bear, was called Elmbeoker beer, then Beck beor, and at last Buck beer. Bines the brewing business has been eminently improved, the number of breweries at Elmbeck has so much de creased that now, there are at that town but sixty breweries. Oelwmbw* Callao Beeeipie. Honorable Mayor and Council: GiHrunug;—The Oommitteq on Po lio* end Gen, to whom wes referred th* communication of the Mayor suggesting an investigation into oertain rumors in regard to tb* arrest by policeman Mitchell of Mr; Ytneey a few day* ainee, bag to report that they appointed an early day for the investigation ; bat being informed that Mr. Yanoey’s aid* of the question oonld not be presented at that time, thay postponed tha investigation until to-day. Tbs oommitte* had summoned before them all those whom they knew were aware of the facte, and after a thorough examination—in wbieh they Jiad the ser vices of the City Attorney—nay arrived at the conclusion that Mr. Miteheil waa warranted in making the arrest on ac count of Mr. Yancey’s boisterous manner and disorderly conduct, not only in the street, bnt in the store of Mr. George Andrews. Without reciting all the ftqfs elicited, it appears that Mr. MUohell at first only aided Mr. Yancey to bis feet after the fight with Mr. Klink, and proposed to take him to bis hotel or some other place where he oonld wash himself; bnt, on taking him into Mr. Andrews' store, his language and oondact there wee sneh ee to caaee remonstrance from Mr. Mitchell —calling forth renewed tnrbnienoe with abusive epithets, wbioh provoked the ar rest. In this connection, we would nrge the attention of the police fore# to a careful observance of the printed regulation* in making arrest*; so that a faithful per formance of dnty will only evoke favora ble comments from a discerning public. Martin. The undersigned proposes to publish, in a volume of 150 or more pages, a work under the above title, covering the period from the selection of the locality for a “ trading town,' in 1827, to the capture and partial destruction of the city by the Wilson Ilmd, in 1805. The incidents will be derived mainly from its newspapers, which will be gleaned for this purpose with much care. It is believed that most of our citizens would like to have such incidents in this compact and convenient form, and will encourage the undertaking to the extent of the small amount asked for the work. Each chapter will contain short biographi cal sketches or notices of the principal citizens mentioned ia it,.who have since died. The volume will also embrace full information concerning the churches, factories, <tc., now existing. We do not propose to publish this compila tion with a view to making money, as the small price asked for it will show. But at the same time we do not want to lose money by its publication, and therefore we wish to limit the number cf copies printed to the de mand for the work. With this object in view, we issue this prospectus, inviting those who desire copies of the volume to send in their names. The price will be one dollar per copy for a pamphlet bound volume, printed on paper like the specimen sheet issued. A small number of copies will also be issued on a su perior article of paper for $1 30 per copy, Payable when the work is delivered, which will be some time next Fall. THOS. GILBERT. May 12, 1874.
