Tna murder of an old man and hia wife
on a flat-boat on Bayou Maeon in Louis

bered. Two brothers named Morris and
another man were obargad with the orime,
and tha two Norrises, A. B. aad Tom,
ware arrested and oonflaed in the jail of
Winn parish. On Saturday night last a
number of men broke into the jail, took
them out and hung them. It ia not likely
that the other mao implicated will remain
in that locality, if he can get away.
If summery punishment will rid Texas

We read in our axohangas that eighteen

have been eighteen persona pat to death

Wiut TBIT WILL MAM MV IT.
A comparison of tbs oenaus and tax
returns of tbs Boo them States will give
soma idea of the injury to their race
whieji the negroes will bring on by tba
passage of tbs Civil Bights bill. That it
will break up tha common school systems
of these States, there can ba no doubt
whatever. It is true that these ayetema
are imperfect aad inadequate, but they
are in their infancy, and the condition of
the oouotry for the last few yean baa been
such aa to make even inadequate pro
vision for them a severe tax upon the
people. Aatimae Improve our school sys
tems, if let alone, will improve with them.
Tba nuclei are firmly established by the
State constitutions, and good manage
ment and mors prosperous timos are only
needed to make them of great benefit
aad importance to both races.
Ia the oounty of Bibb—whioh we take
as an example aimply beosuee we find its
statistics of taxation just published in
the Maoon Telegraph—the negroes out
number the whites in population some
three thousand. The whites return of
taxable property $6,Ml,182, the blaeka
only $91,323—the whites paying tax on
nearly one hundred times as much prop
erty as the blacks. All State revenue,
other than tha poll taxes, appropriated
for the common schools must therefore
be oolleoted in the ratio of about one
hundred dollars from the whites to every
dollar from the blaoks. The poll taxes
are, by the Constitution, devoted exclu
sively to the support of oornmon sohools;
nod let us see how this fund is divided
between the two races. We can do this
only approximately, as the statement be
fore ns does not distinguish the
poll from the other taxes. The whole
amount of State taxee paid by the whites
of Bibb is $87,101, by the blacks only
$885. If, therefore, all the taxes paid by
the negroes of Bibb ware poll taxes
(which ia not the case, as they have $91,-
000 of property), they still pay only
$385 to the school fund, and they have
in that county fully four thousand chil
dren—a disproportion whioh shows at the
first glanoe their inability to educate their
children if thrown upon Iheir own re
sources, as they surely will be in this re
spect if the Civil Bights bill passes.
Under our State laws, the eolored pop
ulation are entitled to an equal participa
tion with the whites in a school fund
raised by taxation of the whites in
the proportion of ninety or one
hundred dollars for every dollar
paid by the negroes. Would it be
wise for the latter to overthrow this sys
tem by grasping at the empty delusion of
social equality with the whites? Such
folly would have faithful exemplification
in the fable of the dog whioh, carrying a
bone through a stream, Baw its shadow in
tha water, let go his bone to catch the
shadow, and of course lost both.

lady, in pnblloationi in the newspapers,
declared that ahe had no knowledge of

aba board of Storm's marriage to Mrs.
Oaatlen—unless she might have apprs-
handad snob a proceeding after Sturm
had, in December last, in Louisville, Ky.,
where she was then living, attemptad
to procure her consent far an ap
plication for divorce, which consent
ahe indignantly refused to giro. She
even that up to that time there had been
no unpUaeantaeas or roptoro of any kind
between them, end she produces letters
whioh appear to euatein this assertion.
Within not more than two wooke after
this interview in Maoon, aa appears from
the records, Sturm made application for
a divoroe in Indiana, and obtained it
without contest. Sturm had to swear, in
order to prooure this divorce, that ha did
not know tbe whereabouts of hia wife,
not having beard of her in three months;
that ha bad been a resident of Indiana
for six moaths, Ao. In two or three
months after procuring this divoroe,
Storm married Mrs. pastlen.

in 1827, to the capture and partial destruction
of the city by the Wilson Raid, in 1805.
The incidents will be derived mainly from its

cal sketches or notices of the principal citizens
mentioned in it, who have since died. The
volume will also embrace full information
concerning the churches, factories, itv., now
existing.
We do not propose to publish this compila
tion with a view to making money, as the
small price asked for it will show. But at
the tame time we do not want to lose money
by its publication, and therefore we wish to
limit the number tf copies printed to the de
mand for the work. With this object in view,
we issue this prospectus, inviting those who
desire copiss of the volume to send in their
names.
The price will be one dollar per copy for
