the ono subject of talk in the House yes
terday, and though the Senate was not in
■ewiuu, many of the Senators were on
the floor of the House exchanging views
with the members. Conversation was
free in tone, and the epithets used in
most instanoea Were suob as are excluded
from print. The Speaker, who has baen
xealously working to harmonise conflict
ing views in the hope of shaping a bill
whioh would be acceptable to the Presi

a monosyllable:—“Wild I wild!" “Would
you vote for a bill embodying the Presi

llr.i Conger of Miohigan. “I do not feel
at liberty to decide nntii I have consulted
Jonea," waa the anawer, which imme

House. The memorandum was called

of Oregon, to Speaker Blaine, “Qrant

Jewett, of Columbus, Ohio, who has
been spoken of ea the next Preaident of
the Brie road, added, “and Thurman’s
too.” “Now, let Qrant veto the Civil

Democrat, “end we will run him as our
candidate for the Pfeeidehpy next time.”
While the Democrats applauded the 1‘reM

stall the action of tha House by an
“advance veto, message,” aa they oelled
it. In conversation with over one hun
dred members in the House, representing
all shades of financial opinion, not one
spoke respectfully of the President’s

In this connection it wob astonishing
how the fear of a third term loomed np.

Your correspondent overheard an Illinois
member of prominence say that with the
office-holding element, a vast oivil service
army, the powerful combination of the
national bonks and wealthy merehante
and capitalists throughout the oountry, a
third nomination was not so preposterous
as be had all along supposed. “You see,

developed the subject in a new light, and other Jobiilu, House I

will be, owing.to the obligation of soare-

tially consist of those already mentioned
in these dispatches as to what would con
stitute the basis of their agreement. From
Senator Mori oo’h positive manner it is ev

it is inexpedient to consume any more
time in the endeavor to effect a unani
