Lions Sfcot from the Deck.
'rom tho Pull Mall Gazette.)
Lion bunting on board a steamship is
certainly a novelty, yet the passengers
end crew of the Euphrates and Tigris
ttt >um Navigation Company’s vessel, City
: of London, seem to have had a most ex
citing and successful lion hunt on the 10th
| of March last.
From the aocouut given by a corres
. pondent of the I'imtt of India, it appears
[ that ou tbe morning of that day, when at
tho junction of the two rivetB, Euphrates
I and Tigris, where tbe rivers had over-
t flowed the embankments, three full grown
[lions were seen walkiug along tbe shore
[ in the water about a mile ahead of the
i steamer. On nearing the beasts, one was
| shot dead while trying to Bwirn towards
the ship. The launch was manned to
piok up the oaroass, and the steamer pur
sued tbe two others, who turned round to
charge the vessel. After many shots had
been fired at tbem, one* was atruok dead
by the commander, and the other was
shortly afterwards despatched by a bullet
from a Snider. The steamer then ap
proached the bank, and the dead lions, or
rather lionesses, for suoh they proved
to be, were taken on board. About ten
minutes later a large male lion was ob
served orouebing down on a small tract
of ground surrounded with water, and
waving his tail, perhaps as a signal of dis
tress. On being fired at be gave a tre
mendous-roar, and with his mane stand
ing ou end, advaneed to charge the ship,
when a fresh volley laid him low. He,
too, was carried on board when thorough,
iy dead, and his dimensions were aa fol
lows : Length from bead to end of tail,9
feet G inobes ; length of body, G feet 7
inches ; height, il feet 9j inobes; weight,
420 pounds.
Tbe like of Ibis incident, it is slated,
bad never occurred before in that part of
Mesopotamia.

Reavers la McIntosh,
V Many persons in this neighborhood are
; doubtless unaware of the fact that within
- ueven miles of Darien there ia a large col-
,'t ouy of beavers in active operation. The
. tuain dam which these industrous and sa-
•tf gacious creatures have built is across
/' King’s Swamp, on the plantation of G.
\Y. Giguilliat, Esq. Its entire extent is
1 between a quarter and a half mile in
length. Trees of considerable size in
the neighborhood have been felled by the
sharp teeth of tbe animals. Tbe have
> also constructed auxilary dams to their
main embankment, at different points in
> the swamp, and backed the water up for
^ several miles. The effeot of the water
, l ' being backed up on tbe lands is visible in
I the gradual death of a great number of
trees, aud eventually, should the beavers
continue their oooupation, this part of
King’s Swamp will be converted into an
w
open lake. We suppose that the deep
swamps of the Altamaha have always af
forded such secure retreats from the at
tacks of man, that these animals have
uever been exterminated. There exist-
euce, however, waB becoming traditional,
until during the late war, when this sec
tion was entirely abandoned, they reap
peared in the locality described. Up to
the present tim8 they have enjoyed quiet
aud undisputed possession, aud have in
creased rapidly in numbers.—Darien

The Inundated Sugar Districts
The New Ibera Sugar Howl of tbe Uth
| inst. presents, from the reports of intelli-
|geut steam boatmen who have had every
|opportunity of observing, a statement of
I the plantations that were damaged by tbe
■inundation, on tbe east side of the lower
(Kauclie and the lower AtohafaUya.
From tbe mouth of the Teche down,
•n the east side of the Atehafalaya, to*
ft rash ear city, nearly all the crops are
hopelessly ruined, except that of Oapt. J.
IT. Delmas—he succeeding in saving forty-
■\flve acres of leveeing.
On the west Ride of the lower Atchafa-
below Patter son villa, the loss will
scarcely exceed 400 hogsheads of sugar.
On Kuigbt Island, on the oast side of tbe
Atehafalaya, the loss will be about 1200
hogsheads.
The paper then gives a list of the plan
tations on the east book t f the To .'•be,
commencing at its mouth (or entrance in
to the Atehafalaya) and going wp an high
as Jeannerettes, that have suffered from
the tunndalion. The editor concludes
sad enumeration of losses with the
Kllowing:
t“The water having since fallen from a
ttrtion of the crops, wo hope the loss
111 not be so great as was feared,
hd seed may yet be made on ground
liere it was at first supposed the crops
bn Id be a total loss.
’ “One thing is fortunate in our section.
Tost of the planters had crops on both
des of the bayou—so that it is not total
pin as m other localities,
v “It is .quite difficult to estimate tbe
toss ou the cane crop on the inundated
yy tying between Grand Lake and the
^tecne, but we do not believe it can ex-
Pted ROOO hogsheads, and the large plant
ing this season should overcome even that
loss in these parishes.”

COLUMBUS ENQUIRER-SUN
Is the only thoroughly independent paper South. It believes
wo are to win; not by complaining about the past, but
working for the future. While it gives proper space and
notice to all political matters of State and National impor

ists to our great resources and to build up the South on a
basis that lias for its foundation industry and economy.
While disclaiming to be the organ of any creed, party or
society, all its tendencies will be in favor of TEMPER
ANCE, MORALITY and RELIGION. Being deeply
interested in the success of the farmers, and having implicit
faith in the grand destiny of the GRANGES, the EN
